The Sako Quad offers four rimfire calibres in the one rifle - 17HM2, 22LR, 22MAG and 17HMR. I tested the 22LR and it was quite an accurate little 22 but I had issues with the feeding of any ammo that wasn't a round nose using the 10 round mag.

These guns are crazy accurate, I like the idea of being able to put a new barrel on it when accuracy drops of after a few cases of ammunition.

Ive had one of these for a few years., if you have your cross hairs on the target its a guaranteed kill. I have the same mag problem amd only put six rounds in the ten round mag for problem free feeding. Lovely gun !

Had one some years ago, same problem with the magazine. Seemed to function better with nine rounds loaded. Also had problems extracting certain ammo like Eley subsonic, really annoying when you have to use a cleaning rod to remove a spent case on such a 'high end' rifle. No such problems with CZ .22 or my current Browning t bolt. Thanks for all the no nonsense in dept reviews.

Yup! Mag feeding problems is the only flaw in this rifle. I bought the Varmint I. .22 LR, changed the stock to a GRS Royal Jaquaranda and ordered the other barrels from Lilja. A real head turner at the range plus its performance is extremely impressive. But for the mag probs that is.

The review I've been waiting for. I'm a Lithgow owner, but I'm curious about these Sakos as there's not much info out there - the Sako Finnfire 2's stock is a much better fit for me than the la101's. As for the mag I think I know why most 22 mags are curved... My lithgow mag was such a pain in the arse to get running I wore the floorplate out taking it apart & putting it back together - a 10 shot CZ mag fixed me up.

Just a note on the 10 Shot Magazines, they are actually listed as a 9 Shot Magazine on the Dealers Portal. Interesting as it sounds like it's been a common problem.

That is very interesting... I think they may have realised that there is the problem I experienced although I'd be more confident in calling it a 7 round mag myself as some ammo didn't feed until the 4th round...

Break in is needed for some mags. For me the HMR mags had to be racked with a pen for a while. The 22LR mags all worked well but I eventually touched the feed lips from the inside to soften the edges and provide very smooth feeding, I doubt there are mags made that would not benefit from it.

Thanks for the review Ozzie, been tossing up between one of these and a lithgow LA101. I've got no interest in a multi-calibre rimfire and given that the accuracy didn't seem any better than the Lithgow and the magazine feeding issues I think I'll go the LA101. Appreciate your work mate

Good review as usual Ozzie. But just wondering if you clean the bore out between ammo changes on all your reviews or just go straight from one ammo to another?
@ozziereviews
@ozziereviews 7 жыл бұрын
Yep, if it's rimfire i put a patch through and then a mag, then shot for groups. If it's centrefire, it gets a patch through and then a round into the mound and then shoots the groups...

Thanks Ozzie, honest as usual. There's a month of arguments there between the Quad and CZ equivalent. Shame about the mag feed, but that should not deter anyone. I've had the same issue with a 10 round Savage. Same ammo was fine in the 5 round mag, but hated a full 10 rounds. I landed up just feeding 8 at a time. Sako do need to rectify that mag issue. You should compare the Quad for a Finnfire II maybe? Cheers

Nice rifle but I am also not a fan of multi caliber guns. However they are quite popular here in Norway. We have a limit on 6 guns for hunting purpusses. If you want more you have to have good reasons. But you can have as many barrels as you want for the guns you own. So the Sako quad for rimfire and Blaser for senterfire is very popular here. Love the videos, keep em coming :-)

Another great review - as always, factual and easy to watch. Regarding the feed problem - I've had similar trouble with both my Anschutz 1422 54 sporter (all Anschutz bolt actions use the same mags) and CZ452 with 10rd mags. They both worked fine as 9rd mags, but just jammed the first round if I put 10 in. I put it down to an inherent fault in 10rd .22lr mags - possibly the long spring? Gave both mine away at the local range and only use 5rd mags now. As for swap-barrel rifles, I don't care much for them either. I might just be speculating without evidence here, but it seems to me you'd have to re-zero the rifle every time you swapped calibres, i.e. up to a box of ammo each time. A multi-zero scope, or a scope adjustment chart may get you on paper, but I just don't believe get you those head-shot rabbits or 10-rings on the range.
@ozziereviews
@ozziereviews 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I tend to agree there Al, I'd prefer to have a seperate rifle in additional calibres myself. Interesting to hear about your Anschutz as I've never had a feed issue with my 1710 using 10 round mags nor with my Lithgow using 10 round CZ mags... but I have had issues with a handful of other rifles now regarding mags and feeding. It is frustrating when you pay decent money on a quality rifle and have issues with a magazine not feeding. To me that would be like buying a car and having issues with it going into 1st gear!

My Anschütz 1727F is feeding superb with a full mag of 10 shots. The only fault I can find with that mag, is that it quickly becomes empty. Annie .22LR magazines are curved while the Sako mag is straight, not sure if that is it's flaw. I've shot the Sako Quad and I find it quite enjoyable to use. It's really nice that you can hinge on four different calibers on that platform. The stock is quite plastic and a little slippery against the shoulder. Though you can always buy i.e. an GRS Sporter laminated stock and replace it.

Allen Jenkins i have the cz 455 and love the 3 cal concept of it !! you do have to adjust sights between the different cals but its just a matter of a few clicks up and down !!! and when you swap out a few times you get to remember where to be with each one !! not perfect but 2 or 3 rounds to fine tune and your good to go !! no different to a quick test before any hunt anyhow !!! always test zero before any animal shot !! for me from 22lr to 17hmr it is approximately 14 clicks down !! and the 22 mag sits somewhere in the middle of the 2 so around 7 to 8 clicks !! but you start there then fine tune !!! there good for those that cant afford or are not allowed to own 5 to 10 different rifles !! some states once you go over the 5 gun storage your whole storage requirements go threw the roof !!! Just my thoughts !! i love aussie reviews video !! honest and to the point !!!

I have a Sako Quad Varmint and I've seen the magazine issue with 3 different mags. 5 round 22LR, 10 round 22LR and 5 round 17HMR. The 17 HMR was the worst. I spent one evening cycling through ammo while watching TV and all the mags work now. So break in definitely was required. With this price... not perfection. Also I had a lot of ejection issues with 22LR. After a trip to factory it works with 90% of the ammo. Perfection... not. Kept it because of the accuracy. And pain in the ass gun laws in Finland.

I know this isnt related to this video but would like some advice. I shot my first Gun today ( a CZ 22LR ) because it was a renta rifle it was right handed and all the benches were set up for right handed shooters . the problem was that I'm left handed and left eyed dominant . The Guy was teaching me was making me shoot right handed/ right eyed. and to tell you the truth it didnt feel that unnatural getting most of my shots in the 8s and 9s. I have a LH lithgow arms LA101 on layby (thanks to your review) and I was wondering should I cancel the layby or switch it to RH and stay shooting that side. or should I Shoot my natural side>? any advice would be awesome/ great videos BTW

All my experience teaches me one thing. It does not matter what the tool is designed to do, it works best if its designed to do one thing really well. As soon as you try to make it multi purpose you make compromises and things just go to s@#t.

Same issue in my Quad. If I load 9 rounds, I have no drama. Put in the tenth and there is a problem. You can adjust the feed lips if you do some research (rimfirecentral has the info) Basically, rimmed cases just dont belong in straight mags.

I don't personally accept that from a company that has the slogan "demand perfection". I think they should re-design the mag and fix the issue so that when people are paying good money for a 10 round mag, that's what they get...

A pity that the Sako 'bubble of perfection' had to burst soon. Just goes to prove that nothing is perfect. This magazine problem should not have been allowed to leave the factory. I trust Sako or your dealer will clear this up for you Ozzie?

It seems like the 10 round mag is an identified problem so why wouldn't Sako re-design the magazine immediately? Their slogan is "demand perfection" which I think is great but when you have that slogan and issues with a simple magazine feed, it's not perfection in my view...
