The compensation is insane! Ask a teacher or a construction worker how much they make. The compensation does in no way represent the value a consultant add to the economy.

Hi Jakob, thanks for your comment. Your sentiment is understandable, and we’d also like to see teachers make more money. But we have to put it a bit into context. Determining what someone should be paid in the private sector is usually up to the market. Does a baseball player making $10m per year add that much to the economy? Well, if someone’s ready to pay that much then maybe he is. Are we the ones to tell his employer that $10m is too much? Consultants are usually hired by CEOs of large corporations. Strategic decisions for them mean the difference between destroying billions or creating billions in value. In such situations, they happily spend $1m if it gets them the best advisor in the market. You can argue that consultants only give bad advice, but ultimately, it only matters what the CEO thinks. The same is true if you need legal advice. A large corporation will probably hire an elite law firm. Saving a couple hundred thousand $ because you wanted a cheaper lawyer can be very costly down the road. And that’s why the salaries at big law firms are comparable to those of top consultants. Outside the business world, even a top surgeon will make that money. And most importantly, to work in a top consulting firm, you also have to consider the job description: - All consultants graduated near the top of their class from a great school - The majority has MBAs or PhDs - They usually work more than 70 hours per week, sacrificing family, health, and relationships - They travel all the time, spending often more than 100 nights per year in a hotel For these reasons, the majority will quit the job after 2-3 years (at around 30 years of age), only a tiny fraction makes it to partner (or senior partner) level. So, with all due respect to teachers, this is a different ballgame. For info on the work-life balance, check out our video on the topic: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mapdpryKt7umZX0.html

Any insights on Canada? Salary, types of industry one could expect to work in, competitiveness of getting hired…?

Not directly. 1. For salary I would check what the general relationship of salaries is, between US and Canada. If it’s a 10% discount, I’d apply that. You can also check Glassdoor if you find a pattern. Generally it will be attractive and not your deciding factor if you wanna do the job. 2. Types of industries really depends on the corporate structure at your regional office. For Canada, I‘d check the companies listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and it will give you an idea what to expect. 3. On competitiveness: it’s always competitive, especially now that the industry is facing headwinds (check out our video on this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sLBzd719tJ_KcoE.htmlsi=jgoS2ryo54GhHSu8). It may be less competitive than NYC, where half the world wants to go, but still quite competitive. But no matter how competitive it is, with the right preparation, you can make it.
