If you are installing a large format tile, Lippage can be a problem. Lippage is when a tile adjacent to another tile is higher, at the grout joint, this is undesirable and will detract from a tile installation. A leveling system, or tile lippage system can be use to aid in bringing all the tiles into the same plain, and effectively eliminating lippage. This system by Rubi does a very good job at achieving just that, eliminating lippage. Porcelain tiles are getting larger and larger as time goes on, any tile with one side longer than 15" is considered a large format tile. These large format tiles are usually not flat, the manufacturing process cause the tiles to bow as they are made, some are bowed more than others, but all will have some degree curve to them, and the longer the tile, the more it becomes a problem. In this video I explain how to use the Rubi Tile Leveling Wedge system.

Used to use lash clips for years, then went to level Tec. Just bought two bags for $120 Cdn, couldnt belive the price nowadays. Went and bought a bag of lash clips for$17 and live them now that they made the wedges so much bigger. Great system, and they break off on the perforations so much nicer. Im sticking with the lash style clips. Thanks for your videos Sal, as always on point

Thanks Sal for another great video. I'm currently tiling a floor using a very similar levelling system (Tileasy). Do you have any tips for how to avoid the clips opening up the joints when ratcheted up when tiling a floor (not a wall)? Even when I wedge in the direction of the set tile, the joints open up.

I don't know how much force you need to break those Rubi clips off next day but one i used i was able to remove them with vacuum floor brush attachment by standing and pushing them off without connected to vacuum, no need to crawl on floor for that.

I am using those to hang large format tile up under an eve. Even with Ardex 77 I can't go more than a row without bracing. Unfortunately due to the way the room squared up I had to work down the Eve because of a diagonal layout. My question is, would it be bad to take some Hardie board screws an anchor the spacers into the Hardie board to hold the tiles in place as I go. The spacers have those little notches in them... I'm using a half inch by half inch trowel.

Sal, I absolutely love the videos. Ive watched more in the past month than I have in the past 2 years. Leveling system seems like a genius product but I have a question about it. Its likely im not understanding it correctly. If you put a wedge on the tile and bring the two tiles in to plane, Does the leveling clip/wedge, not lift one tile out of the thin-set bed? Ive never used one but can think of a few times it would have been extremely useful. Thanks in advance for the education you provide so many.

When you use level master do you find you get more of the clip not breaking off? When i use it they dont all break off. Huge Pain going back and trying to cut the rest out....
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 3 жыл бұрын
It is very important to keep the grout lines clear and to break out the clips the very next day to avoid having them break out incorrectly. Here is another tip, always use the 1mm (1/32) clip in conjunction with a spacer of the grout size you want. Since gout lines should never be less than 1/16 the clips will never be pinched between the tiles, and if one does break incorrectly, easy enough to cut out with a sharp utility knife because the plastic is very thin.

They are all terrible. Gimmicky product if you do the proper prep work before you start the install,and use the correct setting procedure i.e. combing on the thinset in one direction and back butter large format lug back tile you will never have reason to use these horrible products. The main reason lippage occurs is because the prep work isn't done. What this productdoes is teaches the less experienced tile setter to do is skip the necessary prep work and in the long run it makes for a lazy tile man, and gives the customer an improperly installed tile job. Teach the new tile setters that the most important part of ANY job is the prep. Ive been a tile mechanic for 30 years and im not opposed to new ideas but i know gimmicky when i see it. The last thing our industry needs are lazy inexperienced guys calling themselves tile mechanics.

Ok awesome but what the difference. Y is Rubi professional and lash diy. That's like say Makita is professional and Ridgid is diy. The look and are installed the same. Maybe this is more of an advertisement and that's fine but I wish you would tell me if it is. Hopefully you'll respond with a reason. Also I saw the picture you posted this morning of the tile surround and ceiling. Looked awesome
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 5 жыл бұрын
If you have ever used the products, you would immediately be able to tell the difference, just because they look the same does not mean they are the same. The small size of the wedges makes them difficult to use on a large scale, they are hard on the hands, and tedious to use. The larger scale of the pro products, make them more user friendly, the quality of the products are also on a different level. There are DIY products sold in Box Stores, and they are pro products, some of which are also sold in box stores, up to you to figure which is which. You never see a pro using a diy product, like the lash system, just go online and look for an example, if you do it is probably a handyman pretending to know what they are doing. I never shop those store for tile products. I use first rate stuff that make it easier to achieve a better result.

If you are an installer, then you should be using a leveling system for at least some of your installs, the cost should be passed on to the customer, it is a consumable just like thinset and grout. Buy it in bulk so you have it when you need it.

I see your vids and they are very neat and good looking completed jobs. But the use of products like these have a tendency to make the newer less experienced tile setter to skip the most important part of any job and thats the prep. If the wall is preped correctly and the proper techniques are used in combing the thinset and back buttering tiles that are large format then these types of products are unnecessary. Would it be possible for you to do a video of the old school methods from start to finish not using any of the new products? All mud work. Walls, floor,ceiling. That type of work is becoming a lost art. Thats how i learned to do tile over 30 years ago and i must say that if you know how to do it that way then you can see how unnecessary some of the new products are. Your work is very clean and neat and your finished product looks very nice buti think the next generation of tile mechanics would be better if they learned some of the old methods before learning all the short cuts.
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 5 жыл бұрын
I have heard your argument time and again, and frankly, I am not going to argue it again, A leveling system is a tool, nothing more nothing less, it does not replace skill, it enhances it. Tiles used to be small and flat, today they are large and have a bow in them. Floating is becoming a lost art, it is not coming back for better or worse, you can remain in the past, and be left behind, or you can move forward and incorporate the new systems into your skill set. In the end, floating is just a way to get flat surface, today you can do the same with new systems, with far less effort. If you want to work harder than you have to to end up with the same result, then go ahead, don't claim that there is only one way to do it, that just shows you don't know or have no interest in modern methods. You have 30 years in the trade, I have more than you, I embrace new methods and materials, they make my life easier and allow me to continue to install without sacrificing quality and my body thanks me for it every day.
