One of the greatest shock moments of any horror movie was in the original Salem's lot when Barlow made his first appearance.

Yep,still to this day the biggest shock I've ever had watching a movie,my parents and brothers still remind me to this day how some 40years ago at around 8years old how I jumped up and ran away from the TV when 'Barlow' first introduced himself in the jail scene in 'salems lot'.

My grandfather and I worked in the cemetery when the movie was shot. At 5:33 you see a trash can on the right. It was not there then. They had us put a pile of dirt on the ground. I always joked that Geoffrey used my shovel to dig the grave. They shot it just down the hill looking up to make it look like he was filling in the grave. The director asked Geoffrey to look afraid and go down to his knees. I asked the director if he wanted us to dig a grave for them. He joked and said no we will back to Hollywood and dig one. That’s what they did cause there was no grave here. That was a great summer. Got to hang out with the cast at the cemetery. I have Geoffrey, Elisha, Lance and David Souls autographs. Saw James Mason a few times. I was to young to know who he was.

This was awesome. I lived in the Bay Area most of my 20's and would have taken the time to visit Ferndale if I had known about it. I was about 8 years old when the miniseries aired, and was absolutely terrified by it for a long time after. As a kid we had rose bushes around our house that would occasionally scratch on the windows when windy; I always imagined a Glick boy was at the window! Have rewatched a few times over the years. Hoping the remake will be a success and does not hold back on the scare/dread factor.

I had the same issue as a kid. I couldn't look at my windows when I went to my bedroom at night. I am really hoping for a great remake.

I also saw the original airing of Salem's Lot in November of 1979 when I was 9 years old. I was in my stylish 70's pajamas (not too different from the type Ralphie Glick wore floating at the window) and will never forget my first time watch this film. Barlow is still the scariest vampire of all time as far as I am concerned. My parents were unaware how intense this would be as they assumed it was another campy TV movie. Not for this one - a true Hollywood-level horror movie quality effort adapted for TV. I was horrified but captivated at the same time. Slept with my light on for like two weeks after. Years later when I found out the Barlow look was based on the original "Nosferatu" I learned that audience of this 1922 silent film classic were also horrified. Tobe Hooper definitely knew how to build the tension just like Hitchcock or even Steven Spielberg in "Jaws" for sure - and I always wanted to see more of Barlow, but just like Hitchcock, the less you show can make it even more terrifying to your imagination. Just watch the Ned Tebbets jail scene where you get the first brief but terrifying glimpse of Barlow. And yes a visit to Ferndale CA to see the original film locations is on my bucket list too. Here is another great fan site resource for this film > Salem's Lot Then and Now: sites.google.com/a/blowupthenandnow.com/salem-s-lot-then-now/

This is a great video. The book and original miniseries have been my favorite since the 1970’s. My kids presently live in California, so I’ve been to Universal Studios many times. I always assumed they reused the Psycho house. If you take the backlot tour, it’s the right elevation, look (when not A-B’d) and everything. I think it’s cool the Army guy let you into his house. I know though wanted the view through Ben’s window, but we have to respect the guests privacy of course. This was a really enjoyable post for me. Thank you!

@@Everything-hw4jb That would be really cool. Is there any chance you watched Chapelwait? My fiancé had it on and I was kind of an ass because anything other than the original miniseries and the book have been lacking in every way. So, eventually I start to watch the thing because I can’t just be a jerk about it as she thinks she’s doing me a solid because of my love for the story. It’s fantastic! It’s one of those things that King didn’t write but had his blessing and it worked. Very good! Very retro! Lol, so I had to do all the cooking and cleanup for a couple of weeks because of my original stance and unwillingness to be open minded lol. Check it out. Definitely worth the time.

Hey! When I turned into the park, there was a straight road that leads to the parking areas. The spot from the movie is actually right at the beginning of that road on the left. So, as soon as you enter from Main St, park your car and walk to the tree line on the left side. Where were you?

@@Everything-hw4jb I entered the park and the road was in a circular clock like direction so I would have been in roughly the 7 o clock spot which seems similar to your description. And btw I live in Vermont in the area where they filmed A Return to Salems Lot which was a sequel in name only to the original. Many hate the sequel but I liked it perhaps in part cause I saw it first and I think the movie scenery near where I live and music made it pretty good.
