Күн бұрынWith most of California on fire, working conditions aren’t ideal but we press onward. We work on the main chainplates a little, make some more headway on the engine deck box before we wait on parts again, and solve a problem. We’ve known for a while that the mizzen shrouds might not clear the bulwarks but have been putting off that confirmation. Thankfully the answer can be simple. By making backing blocks on the outside of the hull we gain the distance we need for the cable to sit just off the cap rail of the bulwarks. We won’t be able to use dead eyes for the mizzen rigging but traditional lashings or turnbuckles (both of which we have materials for) will be just as strong. Like Garrett said, down the road if we really want to switch to dead eyes then we can re-make/fabricate the chainplates and/or add another layer to the channels. We’re really trying to keep progress going and get sailing as soon as possible. There is still much to be done. We are getting closer and closer to real-time with the videos so you’ll be right alongside us as we figure things out and eventually sail Rediviva under the Golden Gate south!

Agreed. Get that thing sea worthy and sail ready. You can iron out the little things like that in due time. As a permanent solution/suggestion I would recommend that you weld extensions on to the chain plates down the road. Cut in some extensions just below the eye at the top.

Love watching your work progress, I am a carpenter/ boater. I have a suggestion for your deck box, you might want to round over all the corner to at least 1/4" if not more. The first time you smack into it, when the boat is rocking, you will be glad you did. It will cut down on the damage to your legs.

Good for u u get it done I know u will u two are amazing and I understand exactly how u feel. Don’t worry what anyone says get out there and start living the adventure that u built it for together because before we know it we are looking back and asking ourselves where did the time go it went by so fast I spent eight years building a boat and it’s been finished for two years now but my health took a turn for the worse and it looks like I may not get to take the trip with my son that I built it for.

I've been waiting for Garret to say that! Make it work, go sailing. You have infinite refits in your future. You know your boat. It will let you know what really matters. It will never be done or perfect. You're exactly right, all those little details you agonise over in the yard won't matter, until they do and you just fix them because you simply must. In the meantime get out there and remind yourself why you've been doing all this.

Thanks for the videos your not just building a beautiful yacht your documenting your story which is a lot of work in itself. I agree with the one step at a time approach and you can always improve later the other advantage is after you have sailed the boat you will know what works and then you will be able to implement the best solution. I've watched your exhaustion over the past few months. At first glance, it now looks like you're more on vacation than work. But everyone who has done such a long project before knows that you just have to replenish your long-term storage and get done. For that you need quick decisions. I am very happy that you are doing this now and that you don’t keep slowing down, that will definitely help you a lot, i think! Go for it.

I love your channel, and love the project. I've seen them all. Its hard as heck to plan, rough out, and execute a prototype, living in and completing it yourselves. What you to have accomplished and will accomplish is something truly amazing. I love your spirit, effort, kindness, the occasional guitar, and your number one fan, Swab. Always more Swab. I cant get enough of the Swab. Anyway, be careful, good luck in bringing her down the home stretch. You'll have lots of time for improvement. What you have is pretty amazing. Congratulations!! As a old cruiser, I believe getting your boat read for living "out there" is a good choice. There are lots of places, south of you with capable people who can do the things that you might choose to do or correct something that isn't exactly as you wished it to be, but get her ready and just go!!.

Good plan you guys, get out there once your boat is safe. I was at NVM for 2 years, the constant pressure to do boat work can be overwhelming. Now I’ve sailed down to Mexico and I’ve been here a year. Have tools will travel... you’ve got your whole lives to make it pretty!

I work different days each week so am regularly confused what day it is and I was convinced today was Wednesday as you hadn’t posted the video, I was so convinced it was Wednesday I almost missed a hospital appointment I have on Thursdays, gd thing I set a reminder haha. I love the idea of adding ramps to the spacer blocks. The chanels should have then to for the same reason. Wider channels with tapered ends would solve the issue and keep the the overall aesthetics of the boat.

MJ Sailing took for FREAKING ever and were HYPER exacting on their boat, but once they got a' goin' they sailed the crap outta it. They only did one trip to the Carribean and then up to the Azores and clear up to Norway, but came back down to the UK, sold the boat recently and are building a Catamaran. Some people are just wired that way.

I have seen couples split before the completion of projects due to burn out from efforts to make everything "perfect".......well, life aint like that! Glad to see you taking a more realistic approach to get the job done, the real life is "out there", and not stuck in a marina, as im sure you very much aware. I know you wont bodge, just keep it strong and safe, there is ALWAYS work to do on a wooden boat, and when you get tired of doing nothing but drinking tequila, you will have a job to get stuck into. Keep going!

Here is my two cents. I find that function is a good part of the true inner beauty of a boat. Conversely, a "beauty feature " that compromises function can look a little silly. If you think a slot in the bull works would be the best functional solution, I think the look of it would grow on you. As my friend Ed would say " we are not building a violin !"

@@1woodfish I was thinking to drop down the chain plate, and drill an angled hole in the bull work. The chain plate could maybe be mounted flush on the side of the boat that way too maybe?🤔

What Garret said about burn out and just getting it done is a great idea, not necessarily for the benefit of the viewers, but for the benefit of your own health. Get that badass looking boat out smashing some waves and go sip cheap cocktails down in Mexico. Then you'll be in the right head space to be making longer term decisions.

Don't blame you for wanting to get back to sailing. Plus, once you've sailed the boat some, it's likely your ideas will evolve on how to finalize the interior and deck setup. Instead of adding the mizzen chainplate standoff blocks, did you consider just adding a suitably strong wire pennant, led through a relatively small hole in the bulworks, that connects the chainplates to the deadeyes? The deadeyes could then be located just above the bulworks and not require a large carve out. It would be a little tricky drilling the hole through the bulworks at the correct angle, but it would be a relatively easy and clean solution.

To the commenters hating on the burn out and the lack of progress. Listen to the intro. They are taking it slower now. They didn't for soo long! As for the burn out, There are entire research papers about it and the findings have nothing to do with age and often older folks don't realize they have been burnt out for the last 35 years but young folks do notice. This is their lifestyle not yours if they feel burnt out and need to take a few days off, and they can, then so be it. They decided to not live the 6 days a week for 35 years lifestyle and they are lucky. Don't be jealous, be happy someone in this world is doing it.

One thing you could probably do with the brackets is make some new ones that come up higher so the cable would clear the top of the railing

Just a suggestion Jared. What about bending the chain plates in at the channels instead of out. Then cut an oval shaped hole through the bulwark to pass the stays through. Let me just reiterate, this just as suggestion. I know nothing about rigging. And let me say, she's looking pretty ship shape more and more. P.S. we love Swab. Those cute white socks. Lol

I get it that you two are all burnt out Jees 6yrs at it it's no wonder but my advice is take a break for a week or two, go somewhere nice' before you make the decision. From a retired shipwright here in UK my old gaffer always used to say Don't spoil the ship for a hapeth of tar' ! Translated means don't cut corners don't just make do! Aesthetics is everything. I watched all your vids up to the present and you are a great couple who have made something beautiful and very valuable. Good luck stay safe!

How about adding metal to the chain plate where you attach it to the hull and so make the the lower chainplate thicker and more 'off' the boat to give you more room when passing under he shrouds. You could bolt on a piece of steel or weld on a piece - easy.

I feel for you guys. That boat has been a long, hard labor of love. You deserve to go sailing. I have never accomplished something like that. I can't criticize anything you do. I do worry about the hydrodynamics of putting those blocks on the hull, seems they will slow you down a lot when heeled.

Friend of mine had a similar problem, he put the spacers horizontal plus a extra just above the waterline and then used i as a ladder for the dingy and so on

Den Samme The horizontals would also work to prevent snagging on the vertical blocks. If the horizontals extended forward some, and tapered into the hull surface they would help the boat to slide past snags.

Some times you have to pick your battles. Make it work and move on. You guys have put enough effort in to build two boats already with all the changes. Time to let it go and get to sailing.
