There are a few key differences between salt water pool maintenance and traditional pool care. You’ll still need to keep your water balanced and clean. But you’ll also need to pay extra attention to things like high pH levels and calcium build-up in your salt water generator. Once you do understand how to take care of your salt water pool, you’ll be able to avoid issues like fluctuating water chemistry and erosion. So here are the 7 steps of salt water pool maintenance.

My water is crystal clear. what should i do first? Ph level? alkalinity? stabilizer? thank you! i love your videos!!

My salt water pool CYA is only reading to on my palin testing kit, how would I raise that? My chlorine levels are low too, when I turn my chlorinator up I get a red light fault, Ph and Alk are spot on those and salt reading is 4 mg/l.

Do you need to turn off/unplug your salt water generator during any certain times like shocking the pool or adding salt?
@SwimUniversity

If your salt levels are too low, it will run but not produce chlorine. So wait for the salt levels to come up within range before running it.
@Peter-Alexander
@Peter-Alexander Ай бұрын
I always do. Shocking increases pH temporarily. So makes calcium deposit more likely. Likewise if new salt is not evenly diluted and a high concentration gets in the swg, this is not a good thing. So I turn it off and let the pump run for 8 hours or so. Best is to bypass the filter as well by selecting circulate with the 6-way valve.

What happens if you add liquid chlorine to a salt water pool? Not knowing it was a salt water pool
@dfigueroa788

The salt system will still operate. I know some pool guys that was using chlorine during times salt was hard to obtain. As long as your system is operating above the minimum salt level it will still be generating. These salt generators, also called salt cells, work by electrolysis. The salt water is electrically charged, which splits the salt molecules and generates chlorine (Cl)

You can add liquid chlorine, since your water has chlorine in it. Some people use it as an option to shock their salt water.

everytime im opening the pool for summer always use liquid chlorine to shock the pool. It’s important to remember that Salt is made of Sodium Chloride and with the addition of Chlorine and your machine it can be beneficial in cleaning the pool before the other elements are added

If only I have hired six companies, my pool was beautiful until any of them came along so now it looks like moving on to doing it myself. Since there’s some type of censorship going on here, I did hire supposedly the best of the best I paid three times what the local average is so I definitely should’ve gotten good service and the company was an award-winning company. All of the ones that came out. it’s the problem with getting quality employees that people are having not me paying.
@tiko4621
@tiko4621 26 күн бұрын
@@Thepublicaccount As a non-pool person, that sucks to hear. I do imagine it’s a “you get what you pay for” situation though. There’s no way you’re hiring your area's best guys and they’re doing damage to your pool that’s so bad it’s left you all alone. “Buy once, cry once.” This applies to contractors as well; do your research before hiring. It pays to hire the guy with a good reputation, even if he charges more.
@Thepublicaccount
@Thepublicaccount 26 күн бұрын
@@tiko4621 they all have had 5 star reviews and I paid for way more than I got. You can hire the best company in the world the problem is their employees. companies are starting to hire whoever they can hire because nobody wants to work because they got Daddy government taking care of them. I have paid all price ranges with the highest being over $500 a month. no Pool company should be charging that but I was willing to pay it because it was supposed to be the best of the best. then when the owner came out, he says he’s sorry about it. He cleaned the pool and it was beautiful for a week, but he has worthless employees and he said basically nobody will work and he can’t come and clean the Pools himself because there is too many. he said the only thing he could do was send a different tech each week and I could let him know how they’re doing and if we find one he would keep him on my pool. , but he said he goes through them fast he said about every two weeks he fires and hires. So you can’t depend on the best anymore unless you can luck up and you live in a small enough city that you got one guy who can handle his route himself. and just to put it in perspective in my area the average is $130 and I was paying over 500 for the one company that was supposed to be the best of the best he had won pool cleaner of the year six times in a row had five star reviews. he said after 2020 it’s just been a battle. Which honestly I think he’s just riding it out he’s close to retirement age and he’s probably just gonna let it go.

@@tiko4621 I don’t know why my reply back was deleted or didn’t post but I definitely paid way more than what I’ve got. One service was charging me over $500 a month and I was willing to pay that even though the local average is 125 to 130.00 this guy was supposed to be the best of the best. so just because somebody wins awards or has five star reviews doesn’t mean they’re employees are going to do a good job. The owner of flat said he would have to send a different person every week because he said he fires people as he hires them because nobody wants to work and then the people that do work they work just enough to get a paycheck get fired so they can get back on unemployment.

First step, stop using test strips and wondering why you struggle to keep the chemistry balanced.

For me they are close enough since the water out of my hose is pretty balanced
@D2O2
@D2O2 Жыл бұрын
@@andrewmoore1536 I would argue that you likely have no idea what your chemistry actually is, even if you take a sample to the pool store to compare. Take 5 samples to the store and you will get 5 different results, go to multiple stores and you will get different results yet. Eventually you will get cloudy water, scale, alge, etc that could have been prevented if you had better data.

With enough experience you start to know how to read test strips although they're not as accurate as liquid reagents what if you know your pool and you know pool chemistry test strips are much more convenient
@D2O2
@D2O2 Жыл бұрын
@@uptown1317 How do you know you are starting to know how to read the strips? How do you know how accurate or inaccurate they are or you are? If you have a plaster pool, how do you know your CSI and are not damaging the plaster? Do you simply go by how the water looks and whether people complain about burning eyes or occasional ear infections? The readily available test strips are simply guess strips.
@uptown1317
@uptown1317 Жыл бұрын
@@D2O2 I think you mean LSI, not CSI. Pool chemistry is not a perfect science as long as your readings are within range you're pretty good to go. I test with strips and liquid at the same time and compare readings. I really only use them to check for calcium and alkalinity. Keeping calcium at 200-250 you pretty much will never have an issue.

All depends which swg you have. I have a Zodiac Ei2 Expert and the manual states 4000mg/l (same as 4000 ppm) as a minimum. The cell is able to produce 25 gram of chlorine per hour when set at 100%. Each system is different so it is very important to check the manual that came with the swg.
