The instrument you are refering to is a Hurdy Gurdy, it's a string intrument, dating back to the 11th century in european history. To put it very simple, basically you are pulling the crank, which is touching the strings and with the keys you are altering the tone, and you produce different tones. In german we call it a Drehleier, so a turnining Lyre, which cover it more presicesly. Because it's like a Lyre which is touching strings while turning. ;)

@@Canaldoramieh it's also very rare in europe too, but several folkish bands use it to create the medieval effects. Folkmetal is very big in Germany an Europe as well and we have many great bands who uses theses old instruments. Faun is a Band who uses only medieval instruments, Eluveitie plays modern melodic deathmetal using old instruments too. Feuerschwanz and Saltatio Mortis are also great bands using old instruments combinded with modern metal, if you dive into this, you have a huuuuuge rabbithole to explore, but im sure, you will enyoy it. :D.
