Salvador Sánchez Narváez (January 26, 1959 - August 12, 1982) was a Mexican boxer born in the town of Santiago Tianguistenco, Estado de México. Sanchez was the WBC and lineal featherweight champion from 1980 to 1982. Many of his contemporaries as well as boxing writers believe that, had it not been for his premature death, Sanchez could have gone on to become the greatest Featherweight boxer of all time. Sánchez died on August 12, 1982 in a car accident from Querétaro to San Luis Potosí. He is also the uncle of Salvador Sánchez II.

Era un Super dotado porque así te prepares para 15 o 20 round el músculo se quema o como muchos lo llama te sobre entrenas y el cuerpo se amarra y este boxeador su cuerpo le respondía de una manera sobre natural nunca se le vio jalando aire o cansado

Soy puertoriqueño pero acepto que México tienía el boxeador con mejor oportunidad y potencial de ser el boxeador latino mas grande de la historia en Salvador Sanchez. Solo fue superado en estadistica por Julio Cesar Chavez como el mejor boxeador mexicano. En mi humilde opinion Sanchez era mejor que Chavez.

@@focl2003 te equivocas ahí,el invicto de Chávez en las mismas peleas no tiene el mismo mérito que las peleas de defensa de título que tuvo Sánchez! A Chávez lo lleva a superar en números a Sánchez solo la longevidad de su carrera,pero a él punto dónde Sánchez fallece los rivales y la forma en que les ganó ni de broma Chávez lo Iguala. Y si,de haber habido un hipotético enfrentamiento entre ambos de lo traga Sánchez a Chávez como a Nelson,Gómez etcétera.

Grandioso, como lo fue minando round tras round, quitándole velocidad, desgastandolo,poco a poco , como una gota a una roca, arrastrando los pies Nelson, hasta que vino la caída, al grado de desubicarlo al equivocarse de esquina, siempre estuvo peligroso Nelson hasta el último round, mucho pundonor y valentía, aún mermado se levantaba y se colocaba en plan de ataque, tuvo que quitárselo el referee, ya eran golpes innecesarios, en la esquina tranquilos, sin mucho aspaviento, eso sí, diálogo con el boxeador, confiados en el poderío de él, y al último el gran festejo, pelea emocionante, al filo de la butaca, creyendo que es uno mismo el que está peleando, un gran Campeón .

I was born in 1993. Salvador sanchez died 11 years before I was born. By this match alone he is one of my favorite little man in boxing. Nelson is a favorite as well. Both become favorites in the match.

I saw this fight at with my dad and his friend at MSG. I was 12 and probably the most exciting fight I seen live. Everytime Nelson did work Nelson fans went crazy and when Sanchez did work the same. The fans screaming at each other .it was soon fun . I miss watching good boxing matches . They need to do something to make it more popular again. MMA is good but i don't think it can come close than watching two great boxers , like this fight

Salvador Sánchez es sinónimo de "Grandeza" (Greatness), en mi opinión no le faltó nada que demostrar, a su corta edad fue para mi el boxeador más completo que he visto. De no haberse ido a tan corta edad de este mundo habría alcanzado logros inalcanzables como un imbatible boxeador contra puras leyendas de su época, (y porque lo digo?) simple y sencillamente porque lo tenia todo, el boxeador más completo arriba del ring. Al igual que muchos apasionados a este deporte y dada su inteligencia boxística y maestría (aprendiendo algo más y demostrando mejores condiciones con cada pelea) estoy seguro que habría alcanzado aún grandes hazañas en contra de la élite y leyendas del boxeo de aquella época pues estaba hecho para combatir contra los más grandes, me atrevo a decir que habría derrotado a más "Hall of Fame" que cualquier otro boxeador en la historia. Triste haberte pérdido con solo 23 años de edad, una gran pérdida en toda la historia del boxeo, México y el mundo del boxeo te recuerda como el Super Campeón que fuiste. Honor y Gloria SS, Q.E.P.D. my only concern was that Sanchez peaked too soon. Was training very hard at such a young age. One can only wonder how long his career could have lasted. RIP GREAT CHAMP

@@caminho7340 I don't think he did, in fact he made adjustments in this fight or he would've gotten KOd, for example his style was vulnerable to lead rights, he always got hit with them in previous fights, but he began to adjust in the Nelson fight, if anything Azumah Nelson likely taught Sanchez a valuable lesson, sometimes people are willing to die to win, not just survive the fight. No one had done that to Sanchez before. I believe after this fight he would've reached new heights, Azumah certainly did. Sanche didn't overtrain either he was one of the earliest fighters to hire medical staff. His potential was that vast, and so was his discipline.

Salvador Sánchez es el boxeador más completo arriba de un ring y me gustaría que se le rindiera Homenaje a este gran maestro del boxeo en su más pura expresión, creo que se le debería realizar una película a la altura de su grandeza, una filmación organizada y coordinada por los Consejos de boxeo (CMB, etc), historiadores y la calidad filmográfica de Hollywood 🎬🎥📽. Sería algo increíble y muy apreciado por todos aquellos que fueron testigos de sus hazañas en vivo y tiempo real, así como de aquellos que le conocimos gracias a los videos del Internet. Sal Sánchez es uno de esos muy pocos boxeadores que convertían el boxeo en un arte, 🎩 definitivamente un verdadero "Campeón" en toda la extensión de la palabra. Talento, disciplina, humildad, inteligencia, confianza en si mismo, coraje, estamina, rápido de pies y manos, con pegada en ambos puños, defensa depurada, auténtico contra-golpeador, mandíbula de acero y una capacidad pulmonar única y envidiable que lo mantenían en condiciones óptimas tanto en los primeros como en los últimos rounds de cada pelea, capacidad de boxear en todos los escenarios posibles arriba del ring [a la corta, mediana y larga distancia o contra boxeadores con tendencia al ataque/ofensivos o boxeadores defensivos] adecuando la estrategia según el rival. Espero algún día se le pueda rendir justo homenaje al gran Campeón Sal Sánchez. Saludos a toda la comunidad boxística. 🥊🥊

Si efectivamente fue una persona sencilla por eso me cayó bien hogala le hicieran una película autobiográfica fue un gran peleador irrepetible fue de aquellos que dejan huella por su técnica y determinación (y mucha concentración en su peleas) y una sonrisa agradable y a la vez humilde a pesar de que terminará invicto en sus peleas y que su rostro saliera como si nada lo más curioso

Peleón.......Tremenda pelea........me pongo de pié, como se brindaron ambos peleadores durante cada uno de los rounds. Como se escucha el sonido ambiente, los espectadores rugiendo en los intercambios. Esta es una clase de boxeo, pelearon en todas las distancias, nadie iba para atrás, hubo intercambios soberbios. Demostraron técnica, pegada, valentía, guapeza, aguante, una tremenda condición física y una entrega sin igual. Que grandes campeones. Gracias por este joya de este heroico deporte.

Fue uno de los que le dio batalla, también el rocky García, le dio más batalla ( llegó al 15 round) Patrick Ford bailaba bien y era rápido, no se ke podía negar. WIFREDO era de buena pegada pero un llorón , si lo metían en las cuerdas no sabía salir. El coloradismo llevaba coñazos pero iba palante. Pero ázuma Nelson recibió una coñaza que hasta se equivocó de esquina

One of the best fights of the last 40 years, in my opinion. Sanchez was one of the best featherweights of all time in an class with a lot of great fighters. Nelson was a tremendous fighter also and took amazing punishment but was stopped in in the last minutes of this geat fight.

I don't think Nelson took punishment, the fight was even until Nelson was stopped because he had only 2 weeks to prepare as a last minute substitute and that affected his endurance.

Salvador Sánchez es un boxeador que domina las tres distancias, si se les vienen encima se lo saca con cintura y golpea abajo, si está cerca, usa paso lateral y contragolpea con izquierda. Si recibe aguanta, tiene upper, tiene un gancho de izquierda terrible, pega con una piedra en la derecha. Si azuma nelson no cayó antes fue porque es un tremendo boxeador, pero Sánchez es de otra galaxia, quizás el mejor de la historia .

To me Sanchez was one of the greatest and definitely one of the most complete fighters. I can appreciate on this fight he quickly found out Azuma was an outstanding opponent and chose to enjoy their fight... Many remarks about Azuma’s endurance (which he had) but he lasted as long as Sanchez allowed.

Nelson was a last minute substitute., the original opponent for Sanchez had pulled out. This fight was arranged by Don King and Nelson had only two weeks to prepare. He said he had to take it because it was a world title fight and that was why he tired out in the late rounds.

Only 10 professional fights all in Ghana, with just 2 in 2 West African countries, and one in the US, no regular corner men, bad mouthpiece (cut crudely with a razor by Nelson himself to fit mouth 'cos there was no time left for purchasing a new but better one), inadequate preparation, corner men urging him to give up prematurely after every round etc. Those were no excuses. But hard solid facts, chale !!!

Era muy bueno , si. Pero no el mejor que ha dado Mexico y menos de el mundo entero. Con 2 victorias sobresalientes , no se puede considerar a un boxeador el "Mejor". Le gano a Danny Lopez y a Wilfredo Gomez de manera contundente , fuera de ahi le gano a varios muy buenos , pero no de manera contundente , en algunos combates batallo mucho y en otros quedaron dudas de sus victorias. Quizas pudo haber sido el mejor, solo que la muerte se lo llevo y no pudo demostrar que haya llegado a ser el mejor que ha dado Mexico.

Floyd has a style that’s all defense, but Sanchez was more a hands down “make him miss, make him pay” style.

@@seetsamolapo5600 Salvador no abrazaba nunca, a diferencia de Floyd. En sus defensas del título nunca se le ve en malas condiciones, agobiado por el rival, y eso que enfrentó a grandísimos boxeadores. Floyd, en cambio, fue acorralado varias veces y puesto en malas condiciones.

Folks thought this was going to be a walk in the park. The only reason Sanchez won was because of experience. This fight taught Nelson composure is needed at this level. Definately my Top 5 fights of all time. Legends!!

This was Nelson's first professional fight and the first abroad, considering he took the fight with 2 weeks notice as a substitute because the original conteder had pulled out, I think he was tremendous.

@jimgonewild909 The fact that you disagree with someone does not make you wise and the other person foolish. I said it was the first time Nelson was fighting international, all his previous fights were in Africa. If you believe Nelson fought 2 weeks before he faced Sanchez, who did he fight, and what was the date. As wise as you see yourself, you should read carefully before you spill your garbage. If you care to know, Nelson was leading on all the judges' cards before before he was stopped 2.47 seconds into rounds 15. If the fight had gone to all 15 rounds, Nelson would have won. Also, listen to how the commentators praised Nelson's boxing abilities. Come again, wise man.

Azumah era un tremendo peleador. Llegó sin mucha preparacion y aun asi le plantó gran pelea a Sal, el cual estaba en su punto. Sal lo tenia todo. Su talento se ve round tras round

Azumah Nelson is one TOUGH FIGHTER. Salvador Sanchez VERY good fighter and well composed even when he himself got hurt he never panicked.

El gancho al hígado que puso Azumah en el round 3 o 4 si no me equivoco, era para sacarte el hígado del cuerpo, increíble aguante de Sánchez contra un pegador que te presionaba y te contragolpeaba en el avance, sin mencionar la explosividad que poseía. Siento que Salvador en el round 5 se dio cuenta que el jab y ganchos al cuerpo y todo el boxeo por dentro le restaría potencia a Azumah y le daría abertura por los costados para conectar esos bolados de izquierda criminales. Una clase magistral de táctica y estrategia

Sanchez didn't even know how good Azuma was, but still kept his composure and taking it up to another level when he had to. No other boxer would have been able to handle Nelson that night. Talking about stamina, Sanchez wasn't even breathing heavily in round 15. He was one of the best ever to fight like the great Alexis Arguello and Roberto Duran. Gone way too soon.

I have completely different look at it, I don't think this was the best version of Nelson, he only had 13 professional fights, this was his first big fight so I am not sure how would this fight play out with prime Nelson. I am not trying to downplay his win, he won it clearly and was a better boxer, but would this version of Nelson really pose such big problem for Armstrong, Pep, Saddler, Arguello, Chavez, Olivares, Pedroza,Jofre, Pacquiao, etc? I think not. Which makes me question the mainstream narative about Sanchez's quality and greatness.
