I bought this unique looking David Brown forward-control tractor for $450 sight unseen. The previous owner had inherited it and had never had it running so I had no idea what state it was in when I got there..

Hi Marty. That used to be my uncles tractor. He built it for spraying the orchard. It used to have a tank towed behind it. Hence no 3 point linkage. He is a very good engineer very similar to you in the ability to rebuild and change. I have passed on the link to him just to confirm I had the right tractor. Absolutely love watching your videos and proud to watch true kiwi ingenuity at work. Hope you get back home soon. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

NZ has changed radically since the 1980's. My roots there go back hundreds of years when the ancestors arrived there from other places in the pacific so I have a front seat to the goings on. I am saddened by what is happening as some, who would have been known as carpet baggers in the old days, strip the nation of it's rights.

@@daddybob6096 you must be old Daddybob, My father was in a children's home in Papatoe during WW2 and would have been 91 this year. He often mentioned meeting a lot of US soldiers (most were teenagers) as they waited their turn to head off to the islands. Every Saturday ,a small column of trucks would arrive at the home and load up with kids who they would take into town for movies etc. Dads favorite memories were of being taken to the "Frisco burger bar " on the Gt South Road ,where the kids were given a real US burger and a coke.

Good video. If you're going to use the old beast just for the chipper, you could build a dump box onto it above the flat area of the white cover (above the hinges from the side panels) and then shoot the chips into it so you can haul them away instead of using a wheel barrow. It could tip sideways rather than like a dump truck so you can access the panels when you need them.

That tractor looks like an early 70s DB 1210 or 990 but those 3.6 litre 4 cylinders were built like tanks. My Dad owns a 1975-1976 DB 995/990 with the same engine, done over 55000 hours, and no matter where it is, after months of sitting on end it still starts up no problem. They are so simple to work own and will just keep going.

The David brown 1210 followed the 1200 model of the 1960s and produced 72Hp din in the uk at any rate. The 12 speed gbox should be syncromesh although you probably will never know with that linkage! Most had a two speed pto 540 and 1000 rpm (or 540 at low revs for light use) Over here David Browns were considered reliable units that often leaked a bit of oil, but ploughed on regardless. I guess your gearing will be pretty low as the one we had came with 12x38 wheels on the back. Diff ratio will probably be stamped on the ID plate.

I've used chain pulls and hand winches way up in the hills of New Mexico high centered or slid off too much..best things you can imagine and zero power reliance. The really don't fail if maintenance is done, electric has higher chance of failure. Yes electric is great and has plenty of good uses I know, not denying it. But manual is absolutely a good idea to toss in the back just in case.

If this was Australia you'd have to worry about abandoned equipment like this being infested with venomous critters of all kinds. Not so in NZ - there's hardly a venomous critter to be found, other than the rather shy katipo spider (no known deaths since 1901!).

Damn, even the spiders are pretty in NZ.

All the most terrible ones from dinosaur times must have survived in cracks of rock in Aussieland and awaited their destiny to terrorise whatever warmblood pumping creature settled there.

Maybe I've been watching too much Diesel Creek, but I was expecting alot more faffing about bleeding injectors and so on. Basically, new battery, clean earth, turn key, go! What an adorably ugly little tractor - great score at $450. Thanks for a year of inspiring videos Marty and Merry XMas to you and your family.

Funny i was thinking the reverse when I was watching DC fix that mitsubishi tractor, Marty would have this running in no time :) I am sure DC leaves a lot more in his videos.

Merry early Christmas to you and the family marty- here's a small thank you for another year of content You said you were locked out of the Forrest property, I hope it's nothing serious. It's gorgeous up there. I live about 150 meters off the Atlantic ocean in New Jersey USA and it's just a world away. Hope I can make it down there some time. Those orchards remind me of Washington state in the pacific northwest. Cheers 🤙

I believe it is because the main roads to his property were closed so they could repair them after the massive flooding a while back. He mentioned the detour is so long that it would not be worth traveling back until the construction is finished.

@@nickh7050 ooh must have missed that about the detour somehow.. I remember the flooding and him doing some self repair, I guess good on him the govt is lending a hand. Was pretty bad damage back then so it makes sense. Thanks man!
