I was given this light to take a look at as several similar lights had been removed after they failed about a year after installation. The LED driver is very high quality and the LED panels spread the dissipation over such a large area that they should last a long time.

Speaking of electronic crap, I just stumbled on yet another variant of the cheap Chinese soldering iron.. This one has a clear plastic handle, presumably so you can see which bit just exploded inside while you are using it.. It comes with the usual assortment of gubbins including a PCB track removing "solder sucker" and some very suspicious looking flux. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-60W-Adjustable-Electric-Temperature-Gun-Welding-Soldering-Iron-Tool-kit-/322489684179?hash=item4b15e210d3:g:MzwAAOSwzqFY9z3- It might be a fun teardown.

I've been servicing emergency lighting for nigh on twenty years. When the switch was made from floro to LED everyone was suggesting the work would dry up since 'LED's last for ages'. I disagreed. While LEDs themselves can in fact last a very long time, cheaply made SMPS units do not, and in fact I've replaced more fittings that have been in service for months as opposed to years than I ever did. In almost all cases it's the driver that has failed.

Clive, I put my standard LED power supply into a large glass of gin and tonic - as per your recommendation, and applied power. What happened next can best be described as a very loud buzzing sound, a bit of smoke, some violent bubbling, and a wispy greenish brown color appearing in my beverage. The flavor was a bit strong afterwards, I must say. I hope I haven't done anything wrong... when the breaker trips it means it's finished, right?

Many years ago I powered a cheap "walkman" from sets of three salvaged industrial NiCds which I made up into leatherette packs which I hung off the carry strap - and unfortunately chose to use inline 3.5mm jack sockets which as I discovered were prone to shorting - once while I was being given a lift home by a colleague ... I felt things getting warm under my armpit and asked her to stop the car so I could tear the thing off and threw it onto some convenient waste ground... She was VERY understanding because one pack spontaneously exploded in the office while I was away . !!

@8:17 The reason there are no filter cap(s) on the HV end of that power supply is because these power supplies use a system called ILAPFC or "In Line Active Power Factor Correction". The Step-Down transformer also doubles as a kick-back inductor. They can get away with this because this is a Constant Current (CC) Power Supply as opposed to a Constant Voltage (CV) Power Supply.

u put up a bunch of lithonia emergency led wraparound fixtures in an office building. i found a few that were wired up incorrectly and a few emergency drivers were bad and some went bang! not sure if that was due to being DOA or faulty factory wiring. expensive lights too. (this is in the us, but imported fixtures). is nicd really the best option? (considering charge circuit, battery longevity, cost of cells). wouldnt the nicd have a life of 3-7 years? whereas the lithium would have a life 5-15 years?
