Black cherry in my woodland gets to about 10 inches butt diameter and then dies. I've taken down one of the standing dead cherry trees and milled it. Amazing how much good wood there was in what looked like a thoroughly rotten tree!

Cherry proved rot resistant enough that I used wood cut from our Eastern Ontario woodlot as a substitute for mahogany when repairing planks on our antique sedan cruiser. A swim platform lasted twenty years. On the strength of that, I used cherry for two English garden benches recently, though with epoxy sealant on the feet and mortises.

Can’t believe I watched the entire Duluth bit. I like the Fire hose pants but I found they run almost two sizes small. I typically wear a 34” but with Duluth I need a 38”. Just keep that in mind if you like to order on line and don’t like to return online purchases.

Great episode! The kind of things a lot of non sawmill owners wonder about. I've cut up cherry on the ground for a decade and found the heartwood to be in amazing shape. Yeah, more red too! I milled a few walnut dead standing for over a decade and found the same thing. Ugly sapwood, but amazing heartwood. Glad you treated yourself to a quick fun project! Glad you got Duluth as a sponsor. On a par with LL Bean!!

Hey, you said something new and exiciting right towards the end. "End sealing" - I never heard anyone use those words before, and I watched a fair amount of lumber cutting videos. I have a pretty good idea of, what that is, but PLEASE both show and tell about that process in a future video 👍👍. It might be just another boring necessity in your every day routine, but to me it is an interesting mystery 👍👍👍.

I have salvaged red oak from our lot, trees that were a danger to the house during our hurricane seasons and juniper salvaged thanks to hurricane Sally a couple of years ago. Also a few small pieces of a dying maple, one piece that became a handle for a garden hose reel, similar to your hammer handle. Sometimes very good things can get overlooked because they are so close.

once the cherry is dry, get some Gillettes lye and mix 3 tablespoons in a guart of warm water. Take a rag and soak it in the lye and wipe down the board and you will be amazed at the colours but when it drys it will be "hairy" and look like crap. Lightly knock off the hairs and the clear coat it and the colours will come right back. I did the cherry woodwork in the boat i built, everyone thought it was rosewood
