When I heard “Wheel in the Sky” for the first time, I was hooked. I bought the Infinity album in 1978 with my own money, I was 7 years old. I was fortunate enough to see Journey in concert, November 1986, in Birmingham, Alabama. It was the “Raised on Radio” tour. That was the last tour Steve Perry did with Journey.

Lights was the first for me. However, I didn't know who they were until 1980. And then it was history from there. My first concert was the Frontier tour, then the ROR and Steve's solo tour!!

Patiently, Lights, Anytime / Feelin that Way, Wheel in the Sky, then HERE, have Escape. Good God. I feel the same way at 53 as I did at 11 when I bought Escape with my own money. Their catalog is impressive. And that voice. OMG that voice!!!! It took my breath away. Still does.

It's impossible to choose a favorite Journey song because they are all amazing, just so good. And just when you think you hear a song that is absolutely the best song you've heard, the next one will knock you out. It's Steve Perry, his one in a million golden voice, and why millions of Journey fans feel he IS the voice of Journey. Recommend: Still They Ride from the 1983 Tokyo concert. Happy New Year!

Now you want to watch the trailer for Stranger Things Season 4, which used this song remixed with Perry's voice over cinematic orchestration. Perry was so impressed that he worked with the remixers to create an extended version of the remix, which was used in one of the Stranger Things episodes.

Steve and Jon wrote this for 2 of the other band members, Ross and Neal who were both going through difficult divorces at the time. Steve and Jon wanted to convey to their bandmates that they were supportive and that things would get better for all concerned. Journey is famous for their disdain for concept videos. They much preferred live concert versions of their songs.

Love your channel my brother. As a 55 year old JRNY-Head since my early teens its great so see people digging JRNY songs from 20, 30, 40 & 50 years ago. Their going on their 50th year tour this year but of course no Steve, nor the bassist, drummer from this video which is considered the "Classic" line-up. Side note, the band was built around the guitarist Neal Schon back in 73', Steve came in on the 4th album Infinity ♾ and then their original vocalist & keyboard player who used to sing for the band Santana and sang hits like "Oye como va & Black Magic Woman all classic rock staples left the band due to tour burnout and the new keyboardist Jon Cain was hired as his replacement and came into to record the Escape album, and that's when Journey really blew up to become America's best arena rock bands. Though they hit a rough patch after Perry left the found Gold with Arnel Pineda from the Philippines who can sing those high notes just as good as Steve. Only trade off is that Arnel can sing those classic Journey songs, his emotional characteristics aren't the same as Steve, but Arnel is much more animated running across the stage and jumping from the drum riser, as for Steve, he never really did that kinda stuff. Their new drummer Deen Castronovo is another monster singer who sings some of those Journey classic pretty darn close as Steve's but with his own rocking take. Their bassist is new to the band but is a veteran player who played with Ozzy Osborne & David Lee Roth for a bit, Paul Rodgers of Bad Company, Neal's side band Hardline which also had Deen playing drums and many more, he was asked to join the band to tour last year to replace Randy Jackson (yes, that Randy from American Idol) who played with Journey years ago on the Raised On Radio album & tour, but he got ill and the replacement didn't workout so Todd took over. The classic bassist Ross Valory & drummer Steve Smith got fired. This 2023 version of Journey will only have the only original member in Neal, they added their original keyboardist Gregg Rolie along with Jon Cain (who at the moment Neal & Jonathan are suing each other) drummer Deen, Todd on bass and I'm not sure if their 2nd keyboardist Jason Derlatka that has been touring with them the last few years will join them on this tour. Some are saying this might be the End of Journey. But thanks for reading up on them and giving some context. Good stuff. ✌ John from NM. JRNY ON.

Just imagine 20,000 pumped up fans singing along with the band. Been there, done that in July of '83. I would highly recommend looking up a live version of this from the "Frontiers" tour, I'm sure there's some here, you'll see absolutely no difference in the song, just mo cheesey video footage.

This band was truly amazing LIVE. And you hit the nail on the head in your description of Steve Perry's performance. He was born to be on stage singing. He would always engage the audience and he never disappointed. Now, considering this era of music videos...the "Separate Ways" video is cheesy and the band would agree with me. They never liked creating videos that tell a story - each song holds a different meaning to each listener and music videos too often would dictate what a song is about- and this is coming from Mr. Perry himself. HOWEVER, the music video for their second release from the Frontiers album, Faithfully, beautifully tells the story of how "loving a music man's not all that it's supposed to be". But again, their live performances of any of their work will knock you over. "Still They Ride" Live in Tokyo 1983 "Faithfully" Live in Tokyo 1983 The entire concert live in Houston 1981 is phenomenal. I have been a Journey fan since 1978 and, for me, the only one who can connect with my soul is Steve Perry. He is Journey!

As you have discovered in your readings about Journey they have had several lead singers. None of them could ever replace the voice of Steve Perry's though. That being said the lead that they have had for the past 15 years is Arnel Pineda. He is from the Philippines and was well known in his country. He was a huge fan of Journey and learned to sing very much like Steve. If you watch a live version of them on your own you may be very impressed. I saw them in concert about 8 years ago and loved it! Just wish I would've seen Journey in their hay day though with Steve. I was just a young girl then though. Journey is definitely one of my favorite classic rock bands. Top 3 for me are: Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Journey. There are SO many greats from the 70's & 80's though!

One of the reasons this ended up in Tron:Legacy is because they had 2 songs on the original Tron (1982) soundtrack, Only Solutions and 1990's Theme (instrumental). Only Solutions is a great one to check out, and it somewhat less well known because Tron wasn't a giant mainstream success at the time (the song did end up on an album after that). It was a big deal to me. 1982 was the same year I got my first computer (which is what Tron is about).
