Sam clearly has a dog in this fight as he is Jewish and was triggered by someone expressing their disdain for jews... forgetting that the jewish community has the nerve to insist that they are the 'chosen ones' based on the ridiculous claim that God himself told them so, while criticizing Kanye for claiming to be a creative genius. (I would ask Sam as a jew, who is more delusional and egocentric, when you believe your own press (the bible) and for thousands of years push the self serving agenda that God himself decided that of all the people on the planet, that the jews are the 'chosen ones' and in the process offending everyone else by labeling them as inferior... one would have to ask who is the 'asshole' that needs to rethink WHY they have been hated for centuries, by so many, all over the world.

It’s his responsibility to not platform people who espouse hate and antisemitism when he knows the climate is such that no amount of his “love and empathy” will override the behavior of certain loose cannons that follow Kanye’s words like gospel. It’s not how it’s perceived by Lex’s audience that’s concerning, but rather the minds of the dangerous and unstable few who feed off social media snippets of Kanye spouting off with impunity.

i've always said Sam's achilles heal is that he believes he can win the world with intellectual arguments. he can reason with the best of them, but he's got nothing for anyone when it comes to their emotional nature, and doesn't believe in a spiritual nature. You have to reach people on all levels of their humanity to actually inspire transformation. That's what Lex is talking about. If you want people to understand your message, then fine, make your intellectual appeal only. If you want them to accept your message, you'd better start figuring out how navigate the issues going on in their heart

@@nans787 from Sam's book "Waking Up": "Our minds are all we have. They are all we have ever had. And they are all we can offer others." Sam seeks to remove spirituality and human connection from the institution of religion, and place it within the mind of the individual. Meaning any "spiritual nature" one has is merely a construct of their own mind, and to his credit, he doesn't throw the baby out with the bath water. Rather he believes that each person should construct their own mind in such a way as to benefit their spiritual and natural well being...Sam and I just have different views on the origin of the human spirit. i believe our spiritual nature transcends the capacity of our own minds; that your individual consciousness is not the sun that your entire existence revolves around. there's more to us than that, like dark matter in space. we don't know what it is, but we know that it's there, and that it actually makes up most of what's there. and the people who know how to appeal to that intangible, nearly undefinable departments of human nature...they are the ones who change the world for better or worse, because they can. everyone else is just debating. but i do think sam's voice is extremely valuable and am glad that you were able to find such utility in his work

I haven't read all comments here, but this is the best comment so far. I like Sam Harris but I don't agree with all of his cut&dry beliefs. We actually need to be careful saying “we need to be careful how we treat artists,” when there is an increasing number of self-proclaimed artists out there acting out in inexcusable ways simply because they know they can hide behind their so-called artistry. Playing the victim has become an art form in and of itself in lieu of being accountable for one's actions.

I find Lex's interviews with these shunned members of society the most helpful. If they're evil or delusional, let them show it. If all I hear is that somebody is the worst, but I don't SEE what is so bad for myself, I'll never truly believe it, even if it's true. It's simple playground logic, but it still applies to the grown up world.

Most people are dumb and sheep tho and it's not that they don't see right from wrong, it's that they willingly ignore the wrong and use these kind of interviews as a platform to push their own agendas and narratives. There's a reason right wingers and conservatives have strongly used Joe Rogan's platform in the past and benefitted from it. People in the comments simply don't understand the psychology behind "allowing fair play" when it comes to interviews and the people we give a platform to speak. He’s not arguing against free speech, Kanye is and forever will be free to speak his mind publicly in any way he can and Sam said nothing against that. Sam is criticizing the decision from Lex’s point of view to air the conversation with Kanye given the circumstances of what Kanye said and his current mental state. Sam is implying the responsibility that Lex has because of his large platform, Lex has control over what “free-speech” is said on his podcast. Not all free-speech is beneficial to society as a whole. Hateful, nonfactual speech is hard to argue for as being beneficial free speech, especially when said to such a large audience. The problem is that too many people AREN’T critical and DON’T disregard ideas that are clearly delusional, just take all the lies and hate spread in US politics that so many people believe blindly. Or just look at the very anti-semitism that has plagued society for so long, based on hatred and nonfactual claims that has murdered millions of people. Speech should always be free but to pretend that some speech isn’t dangerous is ridiculous. 100% agree. Not only is this cowardice but it also pushes those beholders of extreme ideas to the underground where they are then allowed to ferment through the power of their echo chamber and the frustration of not being able to speak their mind will transform their crappy opinions into something more extreme. I rather have everyone be able to talk their mind which allows then everyone else to make up their mind about them. If someone wants to make an ass out of themselves then everyone should be able to see that. The problem is, that the people that advocate for censorship always pretend that the public is full of idiots who cant handle the truth. In the end, censorship limits ones full expression, forces opposing views into secrecy, and ontop of that also insults the public as stupid. I fail to see the good of any of those outcomes.

I’ve never engaged with Sam before and I’m sort of glad. This was so disappointing to watch. He became so hyper focused on the point of the conversation with Kanye ONLY being about Kanye when Lex emphasized multiple times the benefit to everyone else in just witnessing the conversation happening. I found this podcast because of the Kanye interview and I’m left of center with most of my political opinions. Sam saying that even listening with love is like a gale force storm of nonsense is so arrogantly dismissive. Lex, keep doing what you’re doing. Love is the most powerful force in the world. End of story. I find Sam pitiable that he doesn’t recognize that.

Are you a grown man? Serious question. If Kanye were an individual preaching outright White Supremacy, no one would be spewing this "Love" trope; people would be criticizing the man. Sam only holds anti-Semitism as an ideology that is as bad as other racial ideologies, and that's why his opinion is what it is. Everyone wants to make excuses for Kanye because of his celebrity status, etc. No other individual would be as apologized for as a manic rapper. lmao

How does no one sees what’s wrong with broadcasting a guys’ psychotic manic episode to millions of people? Amen. I'd say *especially publicly. Creating an environment where no one is allowed to be wrong just makes everyone quietly sit and stew on all our worst thoughts, while we manage to find people online that agree with us regardless. Whether you like it or not, Lex & Sam & other public intellectuals get to decide when and how you get some of your information, by interviewing and platforming people. Not everyone deserves or can be interviewed by Lex; so by definition Lex gets to choose the information or perspectives you’re allowed to consider on his platform.

Your assumption is false. We are not limited to only getting info here. You have the entire world wide web of info. So.. nope. In a 'perfect world' everyone would get along... the reality is that there are blacks that don't like jews and there are jews that don't like blacks. It makes sense that a jewish person would be offended by a personal attack, but does a jew get offended when a black is being personally attacked and decides to say something and stand up for the black person? I did not see the podcast that Mr.Fridman did so I won't comment on that directly, I will say that giving Kanye West, who clearly has been going through some mental health distress in the last years, walks an uncomfortable line between normalizing abhorrent behavior through fame and exploiting the mentally ill. Kanye is not a well man. He's not a libertine or innovative, he's bi-polar and has lost a lot of fame and his family in the last few years.
