I think you are right. This is post hoc nonsense for some mental shorthand. Neither man's comments reflects an exposure to contemporary metaphor theory This is not a behavior that either of them adopted out of the blue. They learned it directly from their acquaintance with gun culture. It is ritual in that domain largely due to semi-auto reloading. We can also look and not see -- so the habit is not to rely on sight, but rather to feel the chamber.

Maybe it is just the literal cultural idea that has been passed down for thousands of years based on our evolved circuit for "agency overdetection". I.e it's better to assume an agent is the cause of that sound in that bush over there than to be wrong and get killed by a bear.
