Watching for a year now, I can see why Langford was so respected. A Master boxer. Timing & distance perfected. So relaxed. His left hook should be discussed with the best ever. I can also see why he would have trouble with larger men like Wills or Fulton who could control distance with a long solid jab. Great fight.

Two great fighters here. Jeanette is often overshadowed by Johnson and Langford but he was right up there close to their level. Great Golden Era.

A few years ago no film of the Joe Jeanette was known to exist. There has got to be other films out there of turn of the century legends. There were fights known have to been filmed that were lost. Fights such as Jeffries vs Corbett, Dempsey vs Fulton, Gunboat Smith vs Carpentier, even Greb's victory over Tunney. I wonder if these lost treasures will ever surface.

That sure looks like Frank Moran in the big topcoat going to each man's corner, shaking their hands before the start of the fight. It's only when Jeannette tires that Sam really opens up. Most of the early going they just rush in, throw a punch or two and clinch, then try to slug inside before getting broken apart by the ref. Langford looks like he's in his prime there, knocking Jeannette down three times in one round but unable to finish him. Jeannette shows remarkable recuperative powers coming back from that beating to fight on.

Langford was 5’6” tall that’s small than most lightweights today but With his built he looks at least 150lbs Hard to believe he fought so many heavyweights He kind of reminds me of Roberto Duran
@cheetoyeeto12323 жыл бұрын
Duran could never. Sam first fight johnson when they were around 150-155 and 185-190 respectively. Johnson was more experienced than Sam and fought a tough fight. So tough that johnson and dempsey both ducked langford. Langford is the greatest to never win a title or even be given a titke shot.

Jeannette had to use a "quick hit and grab" strategy vs Langford since Sam was such a hard hitter a la Holyfield-Tyson, but Langford was much better than a 1996 Tyson.I always hear some obviously younger posters here lamenting the lack of combintations thrown; first off, this fight was scheduled for 20 rounds. 2ndly, these guys were wearing 4 ounce, horse-leather gloves. If you came in dancing around and throwing combintations like Pacquao, you'd end up with broken hands/badly fatigued.

You know most of these pre Dempsey fighters might have thrown and landed 5 punches a round. The order of the day was simple punch and hold, and I might add not only these 2 but all of the guys that fought these unlimited amount of rounds. Snorefests was the order of the day, and from the few films we have, engagement was only used when they went an UNGODLY amount of rounds and one or the other had nothing left. To be honest it was Dempsey that ushered in the more modern era of boxing. If not for Dempsey,the only good things about any of these fights were how to help people fall asleep.

@JGmartinezJr I have read numerous times that Jeffries was no plodder. In fact he was said to be one of the best athletes of the time. Very nimble for his size with very quick feet. Dan Morgan makes it a point that people shouldn't judge his movement by the Johnson fight. Morgan witnessed Sullivan thru Marciano at least & said Jeffries was the best. There is a vid of Jeffries training during his reign. It gives a good idea of his athleticism.

Even though Langford had to "carry" many of his opponents due to financial trouble, he is still regarded one of the best p4p's. How do you guys compare him to some of the top p4p's of all time like Ali, Louis and Sugar Ray? Who would win in a boxing match?

Plus, not to mention, you had to be more careful in your output b/c one big shot with those gloves on could, if you wern't knocked out, severely damage your eyes/ears/nose and impair you the rest of the fight. It's a completly different story today with heavyweights wearing 10 ounce gloves and the fights not going more than 12 rounds . . and they still manage to fight at a far slower pace than these two!

@tw69hands2 Personally, I think Langford was possibly #3 pound-for-pound all time (behind Bob Fitzsimmons and Ray Robinson). And for the very reason you stated: Langford was far from a true heavyweight. He just kicked heavyweights' asses, and in decisive, brutal fashion. People who beat fighters that naturally outweigh them by such margins are amazing to me (which is why I think Fitzsimmons was so incredible, also). Just my admittedly non-expert opinions. I can be swayed by good arguments.

I'm a little disappointed in Jeanette's boxing style. His style is nothing like I've read about all these years. It surprises me how few combinations he throws. Lot of single punches and right leads and seems to lead with his face. Good upper body and head movement though. Langford on the other hand looks great.

I hate to say this because I always had great respect for Joe Janette based on things I've read and seen. As you know not much if any other than this as far as film of him in action exists. But to watch this he kinda reminds me of........ John Ruiz!! (ugh).. attacking with a jab, clenching and roughhousing, and then break and retreat quickly, out of punching range. Set up... repeat step one again. that style annoyed the hell out of me. Watching Ruiz do it. and Jeanette looks similar. does this mean Ruiz would have been considered an all-time great had he fought during that time with this style? I'm going to trust in the fact that Joe Jeanette had much more to offer than we see in this fight.
