The Amy Winehouse bioptic really rubs me the wrong way since at this point it's such transparent oscar bait that it's almost insulting to Amy. You really have to ask yourself whether Amy would want the biopic made in the first place

There's something about biopics lately that feel fake and disrespectful. At least from Bohemian Rhapsody, Elvis and now this one. Rocketman and The Dirt feel less pandering, messy and Oscar bait than the other modern biopic movies. Sam Taylor's filmography THRIVES on the sketchy biopics lol. Hopefully James Mangold's Bob Dylan biopic is one of the good ones.

I’m sick of people using the same “consenting adults” argument to explain away age gaps and grooming. Just because someone turns 18 doesn’t magically make them of sound enough mind to not be susceptible to predatory behavior. Also, there shouldn’t be a double standard. DiCaprio hooking up with comparative children is super gross as well and he should be canceled for it.

Weird how that usually only goes one way right? Dicaprio sleeps with actual children (because at 18 you ARE still a kid) but when she does it we should "just be happy for them"

@@AbbieRee If the age of consent was always something like 25 throughout all of human history, how many people do you think would exist today? Do you think you would even exist to make this comment? The human race might have very well gone extinct generations ago if all of the young women who married and had children in their late teens never had those children. Most people alive today wouldn't even exist. Up until recently, most people would graduate from high school, immediately get married, and start families. Had they never done that, there would probably be just a few dozen people left on the planet; if that. You guys create moral standards out of thin air and can't even say where you got them from. They're completely arbitrary and made up.

My mother told me once, that there are usually 3 factors that are at play in relationships with large age gaps (and gender is irrelevant). Sex, money, drugs. Idc what anyone says, an 18 year old and a 40- something year old have absolutely NOTHING in common. The mind set is different. The body set is different. EVERYTHING is different. And when you think about it, it really is gross. When he was born, she was in her 20s, already out of high school, probably in her own place, driving a car, dealing with finances ... and he was just born! So gross.

@@admiralfrancis8424 When they met, he was a child. She was a grown ass woman. You won't know that the age gap is causing harm because you're not in the relationship. If a glowing 15 year old starting talking about their wonderful 25 year old lover, would it seem harmful? Probably not. Yet it would still be wrong. She directed a movie he was in which is how they met so she was already in a position of authority over him. The power imbalance was even worse in their situation. No teenager is able to consent to a relationship with someone old enough to be their parent.
@admiralfrancis8424
@admiralfrancis8424 Күн бұрын
@@misspriss2482 First of all, unless she groomed him during his childhood, I don't care. Second of all, if someone in an age gap relationship told you that that there isn't/wasn't any harm being done, would you believe them? Or would you move the goalpost and say they were brainwashed? Third of all, was Aaron 17 or 18 when he filmed with his then future wife? If 18, then unless he was groomed from an earlier age, then I don't care. Meeting someone as a kid an then years later marrying them when they're an adult, even if barely, is not the same thing as grooming them, especially if the relationship was developed during legal age. Fourth of all, every relationship has a power imbalance, even if one partner is not richer than the other. Anyone of every age is susceptible to predatory manipulation, that's why cults are so common. Finally, as long as someone is 18+, then let them date whoever they want. You can't protect young adults from everything. If you are going to say that 18 year olds are not mature enough to date whomoever they want, then you might as well ban them from voting, considering that the consequences are more serious than any age gap relationship.

A Million Little Pieces is “controversial” due to the fact that the book was marketed as a memoir when it turned out to be mostly fiction. And the writer James Frey got confronted by Oprah about it. Apparently the Publisher agreed to refund certain copies of the book to costumers who bought it thinking it was true. James Frey has continued to be massively successful as a novelist. And the movie came out about 10 years after everyone forgot about the controversy.

I do feel like women directors have lofty expectations anymore. You're going to be the next big thing or your chopped liver. Seems like Patty Johnson's career was thrown to the wolves with Wonder Woman 2. Kathryn Bigelow has had a very consistent career (Detroit was great! Her movie before that was Zero Dark Thirty, was spectactularly well received, as was the Hurt Locker) but you don't hear her name mentioned. The only reason their "relationship" was allowed is because it's a older woman and younger man. If it was the other way around he would be classed a a pervert and pedo. To the " Nowhere boy" movie, (which I haven't watched) and the relation ship to his mother: In fact, Lennon said in one late interview ( guess in Playboy), that He maybe should have Trier to sleep with his mother. That she has been very open minded, that he could well imagine she would have liked to be asked by him. It is quite gross and disturbing. On the other hand, that was one line in a million interviews, he'd given. He must have had a very ambivalent relationship to his early die mother. But it's hard to say, if the regisseur was even aware of this interview. It's possible she didn't and that it's just her own strange way to write love stories.

Had no idea who she is, but glad to see people criticising that new Amy Winehouse biopic, the endless biopics nowadays are increasingly cynical assembly-made IP trash, and unfortunately still extremely profitable even when pretty mediocre and entirely dependent on the goodwill of the artist's namesake and existence rather than any creativity or goodwill on the part of producers or even directors.

If you want to a watch an actually great biopic I recommend Love and Mercy. It was only made because John Cusak had a unique cinematic idea of how to tell Brian Wilson’s story. Not because music biopics do well, or the execs wanted to drum up some modern interest in The Beach Boys. If anything it’s a pretty awful beach boys movie since it only intensely focuses on Brian during two difficult periods of his life. You can tell the film was a passion project, not just Oscar bait. Also, Paul Dano gives another incredible performance, but that’s to be expected at this point. J

I don't know. It's weird that men seem to get a pass on this, with plenty of directors having relationships with their MUCH younger film stars, including more than one case of those actresses being under legal adult age. And most of the time, those directors don't face much backlash. And those relationships don't tend to end in (seemingly) successful marriages. But we have this woman and her adult (barely at the time, admittedly) star, and suddenly the sky is falling. Is that a big age gap? Yeah. So was the gap between Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart, but we don't talk about that 15 years later. Is an 18 or 19 year old mature enough for that kind of relationship? I don't know. I wasn't. But I don't know these people. Hell, I wasn't really mature enough for a good, adult relationship until I was in my 40s. I keep thinking about how Roger Moore quit playing James Bond in part because they were pairing him up with women who were his granddaughter's age, and he didn't feel comfortable with it. But the producers did. The public did. Those movies still drew numbers. Also, thinking about it, if there's an age gap where the man is substantially older than the woman, it's just something that happens in the film and isn't really talked about, where as if there's an age gap where the woman is older than the man, that relationship is typically what the film is about. That seems seems weird.

Most examples you can find of Older Male directors and younger Female Actresses are mostly from before the 2000s. Yes it happened in the past. It was wrong. And recently we have as a society finally come to a point where we can call it out. Look and Leo Dicaprio getting constantly shit on for dating women under 25. When Darren Aronofsky was a in a relationship with Jennifer Lawrence while simultaneously casting her in his movie Mother! he rightfully got called out. To finally come this far where we can call out a wrong thing for bieng wrong but then demanding that we now give women in Power a pass for doing the same thing because Powerful Men in the past got away with it just seems like taking a step back.

I like Nowhere Boy purely cause I'm huge Beatles fan since I was 12 yo, and even knowing that is such an interesting subject to myself, I just don't come back to it cause it just feels so sad, like the ending could be a bit cheerful considering what happened to John Lennon right after the ending of this bleak and sad period of his life, of like amazing achievements as an artist, why does that had to be the whole movie? I'm looking forward to the Sam Mendes Beatles biopic's though. And hey Abbie great video, I like how in some parts you're in the garden outside, just for no specific reason, it gave the video a dynamic that contrasts with your low key chill vibe, the editing is great too and agree with u that their relationship took off and still feels weird in many ways to this day maybe. Keep up the good work! subscribing in 3, 2, 1...

As a Beatles fan, Nowhere Boy had an incredible amount of detail in it. For instance when The Quarrymen do their first concert, there is a man who takes a picture of them. That picture would later turn out to be the first picture of John Lennon as a musician. Even down to John's comments when he meets Paul for the first time.

perhaps it is just me, but everytime I see a "BioPic" I find it almost predatory in its twisting and perverting the story of the persons actual life for the sake of cheap drama and sensationalism. I can safely say I am happy I have never seen any of this directors films and likely never will.

I’m not a fan of watching biopics not because I don’t appreciate the artist or the cinematography or actors but just because like you said something deep down about it doesn’t seem right. In some cases when the artist themselves has helped with the production and is on board like rocket man with Elton it doesn’t seem as bad but even then it does seem slightly weird. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this I really appreciate it ! ☺️

I saw "Nowhere Boy", and I really thought she had her thumb on the scale there. John is made to look more handsome, more talented, more intelligent and just better than anyone else in his group. And the relationship with his mother? Please... That director barely read a bio, it seems, on Lennon's life. Can't say I bothered with the others after that...

I can say that Sam and Aaron’s relationship was not professional during the filming of Nowhere Boy. There was an article written YEARS back by a journalist who was on set of the film for a while, and he mentioned he would be uncomfortable around Sam and Aaron because they were very flirty and touchy with each other. I recall he wrote that one time on set it started to rain and Sam and Aaron danced in the rain together (I might be getting a few details wrong.) anyway, I think that says a lot. Also I despise Nowhere Boy for cutting out Cynthia Lennon, John’s first wife that he was with during the time period of Nowhere Boy. I have no idea why Sam decided to cut Cynthia out and focus more on some quasi incest relationship between John and his mother.

IMO there's nothing wrong with large age gaps in relationships between two consenting adults. But still, dating a teenager while being in your 40s is just nasty.
@JasperLane
@JasperLane 27 күн бұрын
So again I don't have a dog in this race but I still feel the need to hear my own voice and share my opinion..... or I guess in this case read my own voice? Nvm point is these are my casual thoughts. First on the controversy of Sam specifically. While the relationship does make me go "Ew" and no amount of legal adult argument will make me change my mind on that, in the States it's sometimes legal for a 14-year-old to marry someone much older than them which I despise. But at the end of the day, they were both consenting adults, it's none of my business and I wish them all the happiness in the world, and since they are still married 12 years later it seems to be going good for them. Second her actual skill as a director. I always found it difficult to blame one or even two people on the failure of a movie or show considering how much of a group project it is. Can we blame Sam for the plot when the film is based on a book that was quite terrible especially when most account I have come across says the film is the superior product? That isn't even going into studio interference of pressure from the producer etc that can also have a drastic effect that you as a director just have to deal with. (The one exception is D&D in regards to Game of Thrones, I will throw them under the bus and put all the blame on them until I die.) With that said I can't comment a lot on her directing since I only ever saw Fifty Shades after hearing Gilbert Godfried (rip) read a bit of the book. Didn't care for it but romance was never my cup of tea. With that said from a direction standpoint I didn't have any issues with it. Finally in regards to the artist affecting the art (This is going to be the longest part cuz I got a lot more skin in this game) it all depends on what the artist did, who is looking at the art, and how good the art itself is and even in what order you're presented with the information, I think if you see the art then hear the controversy you're less likely to judge the art for it, but if you already have a negative opinion of the artist you're going to be extra critical on anything they make. For example, I love a series called Rurouni Kenshin, it really is a great story and I recommend it to a lot of people, but the creator (Nobuhiro Watsuki) is a pedo, thats a pretty big hurdle to get over. Another example is George RR Martin, these past few years he has been getting on my nerves (and not just because I am still waiting on those damn books) but if he was to release the next book in his series I am probably going to pick it up and read it in two days. It doesn't have to be Winds of Winter it could be Fire and Blood PT2 and I will still get it, I am an addict. But would I still be an addict if I wasn't a fan of GRRM, to begin with? Hard to say. By comparison, I have quite easily cut out a lot of KZfaqrs after doing by comparisons to GRRM and especially Watsuki's very minimal issues. Most of these times are politically related, a big pet peeve of mine is demonizing opposition especially on very very very complicated topics, using a recent example I don't care if a creator supports Isreal or Palestine, I do however care when they start demonizing the other. I have my own opinions and I think most people who disagree with me are not the sharpest knives in the drawer (Then again who doesn't think that?) but when you start to make your opponents evil rather than just misinformed or ignorant I take great issue with that. However, maybe I am quicker to cut these artists out of my life because their art is very them-focused if that makes sense. When Grrm writes a book it's not like I am enjoying Grrm while KZfaqrs it is them who are pulling me in if that makes sense? I hope it does, it makes sense to me so I will leave it at that. Anyway enjoyable video as always, nice to think about things I don't often think about on a day-to-day basis. Stay safe and I hope you have a wonderful day. Or I guess evening/night given what time it currently is for you.

Nice to see you again Abbie! Nice video, thanks for suffering on our behalf and I hope they don't steal your chickens! I don't think the Taylor-Johnson's are bad people really - he was 18 and an adult, so their relationship is their business and nobody else's. As a director she's kind of mid at best. It's funny but my only claim to 'fame' is that I arranged Amy's car insurance just after 'Frank' came out, before she got so famous, and she was lovely. She was surprised I'd have heard of it and I fangirled a lot, telling her that she was bringing that old soul style back and it was great to see.

I don't have the biggest issues with age gaps ESPECIALLY if both parties are very much legal adults, but there are limitations and boxes to tick for said relationships to qualify as a "healthy" one or close enough to it. As long as both parties are very much independent of the other and don't have to rely on the other for anything, both are at least in equal footing in terms of their careers and time period in life, and one isn't in a position of power that is able to dominate the other one. However given the context of this relationship... even without the egregious age gap, it's doomed from the start.

Sam Taylor Johnson is nowhere a saint, but as far as i understood from this video, all hatred towards her comes from her relationships with her husband (i don't see any other claims, besides some weird movies but, to be honest, many male directors did much worse). i'm not defending her, but why Leonardo DiCaprio doesn't get this amount of hate as her for dating girls who are twice his age? At least she and Aaron are married, while DiCaprio's just endlessly changing girls. But with Leo we all just joke kindly and say “what can we do, that’s how he is' and continue to watch his movies. Nobody's dragging him through dirt, nobody's boycotting his movies, nobody's calling him 'the most hated actor' because of this. That's a little double-standart-y, no?

So the whole controversy is about the age gap between her and Aaron Taylor-Johnson and the potential problems of their relationship dynamics, did I get that right? To be perfectly honest, at least from what is shown in the video, she doesn’t seem be so deserving of hate. A potentially problematic dynamic is not necessarily problematic, even her movies seem to be near decent or just rather meh, in contrast of being insultingly bad.

I never seen any of her films but on her relationship Aaron Taylor Johnson, all I can say is that some guys have fetishes and so do some women, the only disconcerting part was she met him when he was barley in adulthood which is very creepy but he was of the legal age so it was consensual. But there men who like women who are older than them like Hugh Jackmen and his ex wife. Really depends individual and whether they’re actual consummate love there not men using older women to further their careers😂

yes definitely! I think some relationships don't seem as weird when the couple meet later on in life because the age gap doesn't seem as bad but I think in their case its because of him being only just turned 18 like if they met now I don't think it would have the same media attention. I assume the dude was 18 when they started dating? If so, this is as much a non-controversy as any other age-gap relationship. This obsessive attempt to read victim and perpetrator roles into every kind of relationship-between consenting adults, mind you-is grating, stupid, and reveals an infantile mind that can't fathom people taking responsibility for their own actions, much less accept responsibility for their own. Good video btw. ;)

Yeah, that is one thing I will give her credit for. The 50 Shades books were just so bad, that anyone who clashed with EL James's vision gets my vote. I'm not sure how many choices were directorial, and how many came from the screenwriters and actors, but Ana is actually a likeable character in the movie, and Christian is far less of an abusive control freak. I've heard that the actors struggled with the sex scenes in the later films (including having to get drunk in order to go through with it), so it says something that STJ at least made them more comfortable on set.

ESSAY ALERT: I think it’s funny how people only say “the age of consent in UK/Europe is 16 so calm down” when it’s an older man chasing a teenager. But the second an older woman gets married to an 18 year old she’s Lilith incarnate. Also Luc Bensson met Maïwenn when she was 12, impregnated her by the time she was 14 then divorced her before she was 22 so he could marry Mila Jocovic. “Leon: The Professional” was literally based on a 12 year old Maïwenn. Yet Luc Bensonn is still revered by the same public that is CONSTANTLY bashing Sam and him being a pedo isn’t brought up every time his name is mentioned and millions of people aren’t wishing him the worst. I DO NOT AGREE WITH OR SUPPORT SAM TAYLOR JOHNSON AT ALL. SHE ALLEGEDLY MET HIM WHEN HE WAS 13. I’m just saying that the backlash she’s getting is extremely hypocritical since people don’t have even close to the same energy for male groomers. I think society just likes to punish women to the fullest extent for stepping out of line and for being “bad women” and in this case Sam’s “bad woman” crime is cradle robbing (as most people don’t know he was 13 when they met and their hatred for her is based on her marrying an 18 year old), something only men are allowed to do since older women might realize that yes, most younger men want them and no, they don’t have to settle for the older men that younger women rejected. Also I think women come down especially hard on other women who have been accused of devious acts as an overcompensation and a way to prove to the menfolk that they’re objective and not just some feminist who support everything a woman does.

I think the main problem for me is that its a very shallow dissection of character, real or not. A person is so much more than just their romantic relationships. I find putting this much emphasis on an abusive relationship in their life is infantilizing in a fcuked up way. It reduces their character to a situation that many people would prefer not to define them.

I have only seen one of her films, Nowhere Boy, which from memory I thought to be rather good. I understand that you don’t really know anything about John Lennon, which is fair enough since he died 20 plus years before you were born, but presumably you have heard of the Beatles? And as a Beatles fan I have to tell you that the depiction of Lennon’s mum is pretty accurate, possibly with a garnishing of artistic licence. But he was raised by his aunt. His mum was more like a sister. I have no desire to see 50 shades. So I must defer to your expertise. As to the director’s relationship with her husband well, so what? Theirs is a relationship that has lasted. He was a consenting adult when they met and it is still going strong. Before she made that film she was a renowned artist. Her transition to film director has been pretty impressive. She’s not a great director but what she has done has been well received. And if she finds herself drawn to troubled relationships well she isn’t the first. Happy ever after doesn’t make for great drama. Maybe one day you’ll be a director yourself. Just don’t cast anyone you fancy in case you’re accused of hypocrisy.

you people need to live more. judging all the time especially in relationships matters will get you nowhere, will just please your "righteous mindset". sure there are always things that should or shouldn't be and in the context of love, sex, passion between adults there are lots of both "the perfect and correct way" is an illusion played only by one because the other will have another version of that "perfect and correct way". but needs, desires, oportunity, curiosity, risk are real so the connection between two people can be about what they want now and what they are willing to explore beyond that. it's complex because there are other elements to consider like personality traits, upbringing, view of life, tendencies. saying just gross doesn't cut it.

People are mostly hating on her because she’s a woman and they’re jelaous. Jay-Z and Beyonce are called couple goals when he started dating her at 19- same age as Aaron. And don't get me started on male celebs who dated 14-16 year olds when they were in their 20s and 30s and are still hailed as heroes: Kobe Bryant, Elvis, Brad Pitt, Paul Walker, Jay-Z.

You made a very valid point, I think it is really interesting how genders really affect how people perceive the relationships! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the topic 😊

The problem I think with Sam Taylor-Johnson is that she makes films that are exploitative but try to hide it. Everyone one of them involves a sensational subject that she will film in a semi-purient but artsy manner. It then is supposed to have elevated her work above that of a carnival barker. It's a similar problem that David Fincher has and Sam is very similar to him. What makes both of them interesting as film makers is that they cannot get past their own tastes whether or not the material calls for it. It's kind of lost from the trees though cause they are both very technically proficient directors. I think Sam Taylor Johnson and Aaron Taylor Johnson would be more bothersome if they weren't still together. It seems like it is outside the norm but legit. He's a handsome enough guy to run off on her if he felt like it but he hasnt. The guy is practically constantly being encouraged to do so. I think she also got away with them meeting when the whole cougar thing was fashionably in. I dont think that a person turning 18 means that they are suddenly mature. Sadly there are people who are well into their 50s that are still about teenage level maturity. However, at some point, a person has to be considered an adult and responsible for their own actions or we run the risk of making forever children (hence people in their 40s using cutesy talk on twitter). I think people should be very careful cause there are so many manipulative people out there. However just cause something looks different at first, it doesnt mean we should immediately assume something nefarious. Also Sam working on Destricted and making a porno short film with other art exploitation directors like Gaspar Noe and Larry Clark sums her up a lot more than anything else. I havent watched it (i dont know if it has distribution and not interested cause none of that is my thing) but just conceptually it's clearly 100% her thing. Exploitation dressed up as art.

I get that at some point someone should be considered an adult but 18 is still way too young for me. I would say 21. If he was 21 when they met it would be a different story🤔 still weird but at least he wouldn’t have been legally a child a year or even a few months before.

@@lucamara6424 I get your point about the waiting until 21 bit and I think anyone thinking it should be lower than 18 is either very ignorant or up to no good. We can't keep raising the bar though cause then we become forever children and that only benefits the creeps who exploit people by infantilizing them. Being an adult is difficult but for the sake of society people have to take that responsibility and it's not really taught that way anymore. I think it's more odd in the Taylor-Johnson case cause typically it's men with younger women which makes sense from a biological/evolutionary standpoint with child bearing and providing material goods. She also isn't like the most attractive woman. Maybe Sam Taylor-Johnson has something in person that doesn't translate across the screen to draw a younger a man. I dont know her personally and maybe she's amazing. I'll probably never know. I think it'd be easier to put aside if she was a better artist cause you'd understand the attraction. At best, she's interesting in her exploitations and at worst boring.

My first and last video with Abbie. What a nightmare. Ignorant, boring and dull. I learnt nothing. STW is a terrible director but this is not the video to explain that. "The video was er good." Wow, how er insightful. Calling E L James, El is fucking hilarious.
