Sambar Deer High Country Hunt - Hunting Victoria - Part 1

Straight out of the latest lockdown a couple of weeks ago Tyson, Reese and myself got up to the high country for a 3 day Sambar hunt.
In this part 1 video I head off into the bush for the first morning hunt and track some deer.
If you love hunting Victoria, Sambar deer. or the Australian bush you'll probably like the video, you might even learn some things too.

Thanks Raff :) yeah mate we Victorians are the lucky ones. We have the best hunting in Australia. All we need now is for restrictions to ease so we can get out haha

@@Thehuntsmanshow Never mate. total keyboard hunter on this end. Very keen to get it into it though as I love archery target shooting with my compound and recurve bows, but I've never hunted anything aside from witchetty grubs haha ( originally from the NT) Do you have any advice on getting started for someone new as my self to hunting? feel free to tell me to just bloody google it if my question is lazy mate. @@raffd6664 haha always happy to offer advice mate :) the best thing you can do is go our and cover some country. Find a nice little pocket of state park near you and start practising your stalking. Bunnies are great for that. Also of yoy grt near the high country you can try and start for deer. Just make sure you using the right bow and arrow to get a clean kill. You want to be pretty confident when you make that first shot too. If you do go after deer you'll need a game deer permit as well which you can grt online for like $40 a year :) an archery club is also a great place to start. Or better yet if you can find a guided bow hunt you'll learn heaps!!! Not to plug my own platform too much but try huntingtrips.com.au and search bow hunting in Victoria. I'm sure yoy could find something:) - Chris

Just started the trip of getting my firearms licence. Live on a property in the upper Murry surrounded by public forest at the base of the high country . Have deer walking past our home lol. Enjoying the videos. Thanks

Awesome stuff where are you located? I’m in Bendigo and always keen for a hunt if lockdown is done. Also a couple things the fallow are bucks and does and sambar hind and stag, not to be that guy 😂 but just for future reference

All good John. I know the gender names for tbr different sleces of deer I just sometimes refer to sambar hind as a cow given how large they are. It's kind of an 'in joke' lol. A few people now have mentioned it haha I probably should have said something. I live near Geelong personally in Victpria. So currently enduring another lockdown much like you. How long have you hunted for mate?

@@Thehuntsmanshow no worries, about 2 years, I usually head up around benalla. Shot about 16 deer I think now, there’s some good country between Geelong and Bendigo with plenty of fallow and reds around too, I’ve shot a fair few in there but usually leave the does alone as I’m after some of the good bucks hanging around

@@devinb3397 Benalla sounds great! I've never hunted up there before. I should add it to my list, or even hit you up for a hunt if you're keen. I see plenty of Fallow either up in the High Country or the Otways, but the Reds are more rare (and a nicer deer in my opinion). Would you be up for a hunt once these lockdowns disappear? - Chris

You didn’t wear any orange or at least a blaze orange cap?

Great question. I actually don't have any blaze gear. I need to invest in some. During this hunt my fitness and I were the only ones on the mountain and were hunting in different areas communicating via radio / gps so there was little risk of us bumping each other or accidentally stalking each other. Blaze is a great idea though.i need to get me some.

@@thehuntersministry nice. Sambar are fantastic to hunt. They are like the ghosts of the bush. They make a great challenge as well as a tasty sausage!

It's was Shards of a broken crown by Raymond E Fiest. I'm a sucker for well written fantasy novels and Raymond has some of the best. I'm currently Re reading his life work from the start, for the 3rd time haha.

@@Thehuntsmanshow i do, i thought i recognized the cover also, i have that one, Raymond E Fiests works are somg good reads, just re started Robert Jordans The wheel of time, if i took a book hunting a deer could nap beside me and i wouldent notice

@@mathewemery3330 haha the trick is to separate and compartmentalise your senses and attention. It didn't make for great ready time as your always quickly looking up when you hear a twig snag haha but it does help pass the time when your sitting in a blind or taking a rest. Nice to find another hunter who enjoys reading fantasy :) Robert's work is good, I think you'll really like it :) Do you have any other recommendations on solid fantasy writers Mathew?

@@Thehuntsmanshow Terry goodkind's sword of truth series is very good, Sara Douglass, Terry pratchett, Gav thorpe to name a few, got around 300 in my collection at least
