I bought an incredible Jaguar XF R at the Junk Auto Bank sale. It was sold super cheap because of an "engine knock" which was misdiagnosed and it is just a simple $20 part... This car is easily as good as the BMW M5, E63 and E55 AMG, and Audi RS7 if you compare how much they cost. Also make sure you check out the Jaguar XF Supercharged, it's nearly as good and even cheaper!

Hey Sam, i used engine flush on a 2001 skoda octavia 1.8T (audi engine) that hat a lot of gunk build up, and a problem with the oil pressure. After pouring in the stuff you could hear the engine running quieter. I drained the oil, and filled op with quality synthetic oil and a friction modifier. The oil pressure problem was gone, that was over 6 years ago. I have used an engine flush for every oil change since then and the engine never made any problems again. The car is still used regularly by a family member and it runs better then when i got it.

My XF has been trouble free for 1 year of abuse, only thing that's broken is a headlight and a clamp on the exhaust came loose after gutting the mid section, probably the shops fault, caused a horrible rattle, few twists of a screw driver and problem solved... I think most European cars are unreliable in the US because many people in the US do 20+k miles a year and often with barely any maintenance then wonder why they blow their engine, I think euro car engines are much more modern and technology filled and therefore are much more sensitive to maintenance and small defects cause bigger issues, US engines seem to be straight to the point, simple, boat loads of power and due to the simplistic nature, much more reliable and easy to fix when they do mess up

GM used these as well on their supercharged engines. The problem with the noise is that if the amount of play gets to be too large, and in your case, it sounds like it was very very close to that limit, the impellers inside the supercharger grind against each other and the entire thing comes apart. If you are lucky, the damage is small, usually valves (usually the edges get nicks in them from the metal shavings and some cylinder scoring) and the system bypasses the damaged part. Or it can send an inch piece of metal into a cylinder. IME, the replacement items are good for 40-60K miles, same as the original. They wear out and are a normal item to replace every 3-5 years. On this car, it's buried. On a GM, it's on the top of the engine and a 20 minute job.

Yep I use a fluid extractor to pump out the oil on my MB and the filter housing is on the top of the motor. That pump has paid for itself many times over and the time it saves me is incredible. I have the oil changed on the car in less than 20 minutes. Main thing is to run the motor for a bit before doing the change because the warm oil will flow far better when being extracted.

Just to touch on the differences between the XF Supercharged and XFR. For pre-facelift XF-S models (2010 and 2011) it was mechanically identical to the XFR (i compared parts lists when I bought my SUpercharged) and for the facelifts, as far as I can tell, only the stock tire offered changed betweed it and the XFR. Most of what you got going for an R outside the extra 40HP was the sporty bolstered seats (available on XF "S" models and XFR in facelift only), an R badge on the gauges, infotainment, passenger dash panel, seats, and rear, 2 heat extractors on the hood, different front and rear fascia, and wheel design (both got 20" wheels as standard in the same width and offsets). Both have the same tuning capabilities and limitations (intercooler upgrades needed to breach 630Hp reliably, when to swap lower pulleys, the relative uselessness of changing the airboxes until 650+), the same 6HP ZF transmission, and the same E-Diff.

My wife owned a car with a 231 Buick. They were notorious for oil control issues. I tore the top of the engine down and found thick dried oil all over the cylinder valley. I scraped it out with a putty knife but I couldn’t drop the pan. I changed the oil which turned black instantly on startup due to the buildup. I put a can of engine restore through it. Chunks poured out of the oil pan....chunks. A week later I ran restore through again and I got really dirty oil out of it. I refilled it and that oil change stayed clean. The flush had removed years of oil buildup.

Sam I've used liquimoly mso2 antifricton with great success, it's not a huge difference as the oil is the main component and has all the detergents and friction modifiers. But the mso2 is great stuff!!!! But engine flush is not generally recomended and especially with small passages inside the engine, use some atf in the oil, drive a few 100 miles, then change oil again. It will slowly dissolve the gunk but the flush will break off chunks quickly and can clog more than it unclogs

I have a XF and the gear selector dial has been known to fail and get stuck down, huge job to get it fixed and a absolute nightmare job, I'd also recommend going into your climate settings and putting the rotating vents into 'always open' as cool as it is having the spinning vents, if and when they stop working I believe it's a dashboard out repair, again a total nightmare... Fantastic cars to drive and personally I found it to handle waaay better than a BMW 5 series, only bad point for me is that in the UK a XF is horrible to keep fueling when we're paying not far off $2 per litre of V Power

that's the big difference between a car designed for extraction and a car that isn't though. One designed for extraction will extract all the oil. Bit like some cars have a drain plug on the side of the pan, there's still a 1/8"-1/4" of oil after draining with the plug. That being said though modern vehicles don't have sludge at the bottom of the pan, if you do then there's more to worry about than how you drain the oil

I own 2 Land Rovers and Ive learned that all JLR products have certain gremlins that if you are mechanically inclined you can fix them and have an awesome machine. Most people are just scared of them because they hear about or experience horror stories after things go too long unfixed causing the $12000 engine (+labor) to explode. The air suspension is very simple to fix if you have a good diagnostic tool but the dealers charge thousands. If you are gonna pay someone to work on them run away. If you can do it then they are cheap and absolutely awesome. That 5.0 supercharged is a silky smooth monster.

I don't know if i would attempt this on an engine like this, but an old school mechanic from my area told me that back in the 70s and 80s they would use kerosene heating fuel or off road diesel fuel as a motor flush. He said they would just dump in about a half gallon right on top of old oil, if it was overfull was not a major concern as this was only in the engine for a few min, but they would run the engine and rev it a few times for about 10-15 min before draining out everything. they would then add another half gallon of fuel and run it again, again fill level which would be low at this point was not a concern, another 10 min or so. drain it again, then fill it up with fresh oil and filter. He said that this would wash out a large majority of sludge buildup and help clear any of the really small oil passages, but like any of the off the shelf solutions was only a band-aid for an obviously bigger problem. When I asked about any negative side effects of the fuel in the crank case he told me that there is a small chance that it could cause excessive wear on things like bearings or rockers, basically any moving part, but that for such a short running time it was unlikely. he also cautioned against doing a motor flush of any kind, either with fuel or with a store bought additive too often, and that he personally would never repeat the process on back-to-back oil changes unless the engine still had a very excessive build-up.

Oil extractors are da bomb! I picked one up a few years ago. In ten minutes I can do an in-driveway oil change after coming home from the office without bothering to lose the suit. They're quick, easy, and painless. No longer do I have to jack up the family's vehicles to get this regularly-scheduled maintenance item off the to-do list. But... My old 1993 C1500 pickup had baffles in the oil pan which made getting to the very bottom nearly impossible. Also, if the poly line extraction tube was forced, it would snake its way into the baffles and get hung up on the sharp edges of the metal. It sucked so bad to be able to do all the vehicles sans one. I finally bit the bullet, jacked up the pickup truck, and removed the oil pan for modification. A little bit of cutting and welding later and the oil pan was rendered safe for up-top oil extraction. It was a project well worth the effort due to the savings in hassle and time oil extraction provides. Also, even if one has an underside oil filter (like the C1500), oil extraction still makes sense. The oil system is closed loop. As long as one changes the oil per the recommended interval, moving oil filter swap intervals to 20k or even 30k is perfectly okay. If your filter media is clogging up that fast, the engine ain't going to last for much longer anyway. And think about it... Do you replace the fuel filter every time you fill up with gas? And the fuel system is an open loop setup. Oil extraction... Seriously, work smarter not harder. They also make power steering fluid changes painless -- drain the reservoir, top off with fresh, drive for a couple of weeks, and repeat.

My pop got his hands on a 67 Porsche 911s for a steal. It took a trip to California and back to Phoenix, but the effort had more than paid off. The owner thought that the engine was needing to be rebuilt. Pop started it, and it was running really rough. He took the air cleaners off of the Webber's and synchronized them, and wallah! I hopped in for the test drive and it ran like a raped ape, cornered 90 degrees turns doing an easy 60mph and accelerated with ease. If that guy was to learn that he had let go of a cherry Porsche for a salvage price, he might have took a drive off of a cliff off Mulholland drive or something. Pop restored the car to European specs and has been offered 500k for it several times, and he has turned it down. It's a beauty. It's the Porsche green, the color that looks almost army green and the red leather interior. Every screw bolt has been re- coated through out. That's the level of detail that he had done to that car. It's a great thing to find a gem mistaken for a lump of coal. Sounds like you did it with the jag you got there!👍
