Me when I'm still a beginner: -Hates to draw side views -Only draws people with straight and smiling face -Not using references -Covers the mouth and nose with something -Uses airbrush in the whole rendering process -Takes about an hour in anatomy -Inconsistent style (Well, until now but only super slight difference LMAO) -Hates to draw clothes -Never draw hands and feet -If I draw a full body, it will be a silhouette My progress is slow but the outcome is totally worth it! I'm still practicing to master my desired style but I'm not a beginner already. Thanks sir Sam for inspiration!!!

This video was a massive eye opener. I've been sketching for about a month and have watched about 10 different face sketching tutorials, and every time, I draw something that looks like a clown from a nightmare. I'm not sure what it was about your tutorial, maybe the simplicity or the vertical guidelines, but my (still admittedly awful) face sketches actually resemble normal human beings now. Thanks so much!

This was definitely a great help. I just recently got myself a drawing tablet and am getting ready to practice the drawing fundamentals once the angled tablet/book stand I ordered gets here (it's a screenless tablet, but I've found it's far more comfortable to work with when it's standing up than when it's laying down horizontal). I'm looking forward to drawing some of my personal OCs to practice portraits, anatomy, and posing, so I figured I'd look for some videos that tackle the different parts and pieces of that, and this was a really helpful guide. I think I'll be keeping this channel in my back pocket going forward!

And on the flip side: if you *do* have natural artistic talent, it alone is not enough! For the sake of my point, I'll throw modesty out the window: I have artistic talent. I've had a knack for it from a very young age, and my art consistently turned out better than my peers while growing up. BUT. I never really applied myself. I didn't learn technique, I didn't study anatomy, I didn't even practice. The only 'practice' I got was when I was drawing actual pictures. And guess what? It caught up to me. My art skills were quickly left in the dust as I got older, and while I'm over thirty now there are artists in their teens/early twenties who absolutely smoke my art. I've only recently started studying art properly, and I'm realizing just how much I drew from 'intuition', and how often that intuition came up short. It was 'good enough', but it held my art WAY back. Now my art is improving dramatically from studying and *practice* (serious emphasis on practice), and it's thanks to people like Sam who generously share their knowledge with the rest of us. So to reiterate, don't let a lack of talent hold you back (you can compensate with hard work and practice), but don't let having talent hold you back either (without hard work and practice, your skills will plateau early and will stagnate). In summary: no matter what, hard work and practice are essential to developing your art to its fully potential! Also, since simply saying 'practice' in a void is kind of vague, here's an example for anyone wondering what sort of practice I've been doing: right now I've got a digital canvas covered completely in noses. Noses of all different shapes, sizes, and from various angles. I've learned SO much from drawing all these noses. Noses now look different to me, because I'm looking at them from a whole new perspective. The types of nostrils, the angles, the shapes, hours and hours of drawing noses has taught me so much (along with watching videos on drawing noses). I've found myself staring at peoples' noses while talking to them now, lol. I kept looking at Sam's nose while watching this video. But it's enhanced my game so much, I'm finally starting to become happy with how I draw noses. So when one is told to 'practice', it often means repetition. I learn the most from making mistakes, so the more mistakes I make the more I learn. I've learned how to draw a nose by learning how *not* to draw a nose, and the only way to learn that was by repetition. I know this is a wall of text, but I hope I was able to help somebody out there with this comment. Happy drawing, and know that I am rooting for all of you artists 100%!

this video helped me so much! im a beginner and I really want to get better at portaits and I just finished trying to sketch one out for the first time after being to afraid to for a bit and I gotta say I am actually pleasently surprised with how my sketch came out! I mean you can deffinetly tell it was my first time trying to draw a person but im still happy with it. without this video I dont think I would have had the confidence to start practicing portaits!
