Same Defense Targets in Seemingly Different Techniques

3 жыл бұрынThe understanding of pressure points and vulnerable targets has largely been lost from mainstream karate. I believe the system was historically taught in private (in Okinawa), but did not make it into the public karate curriculum. For safety in working with the public, young people, and in competition, the targets devolved into 'head' and 'body'.

I do understand the concept, the explanations, and the application... but what worries me is the speed of the attack. I'm not convinced you get enough time to block a direct punch with soto uke when it is at regular speed. The other hand has to deviate the attack first, then the second hand would block. What do you think?

Well, you might not be able to block any given attack in time. But, hopefully if you have been trained to work off your natural flinch reflex, it will give you an edge. Also, in the situations demonstrated you are actually blocking at the end of the technique, i.e., much later in the attack then is sometimes utilized in the kumite, for instance. As you increase the stress, or chaos of the situation, it is also perfectly reasonable to train that you have not begun to defend yourself until after you have been hit.
