In 1971, Frank Hartmann captured a series of photos around Apia, Samoa. Now 45 years later, and armed with kind permission from the copyright owner, Dr. Roland Seib (© Roland Seib 2010-2016) I have now arranged these old photos in video format to share for your viewing pleasure. It sure does bring back fond memories of the 70s, 80s, and 90s in Samoa. There was a time when I thought I would never ever see a photo of the Old Market at Tau'ese, a va'a kalasigi like the Maretana, WSTEC, Casino Hotel, and other buildings. Well, here they are again. I hope you enjoy it. So feel free to share it.

Myriads of emotions from memories of my childhood, while watching these beautiful familiar settings, the Samoa of my longings, Samoas Apia town which raised generations with the town clock, the Tivoli movie theater, Emelios pagipopo and halfmoon pies, the images of lawn bowling at the Casino Hotel, the old market and all these old colonial buildings, I wished were preserved. My siblings and I shared many after school and weekend hours at this Tivoli theater, if for nothing else, just an excuse for a bags of delicious freshly roasted peanuts downed with an orange flavored drink. Yes, if only we can turn back time.Thank you so very much for capturing these memories of our beloved Samoa and many thanks for sharing them. God Bless Samoa.

Thank you, Asipau pamela Tafua McMoore. You perfectly summed up our treasured memories of yesteryears. Sadly, our "wise" government don't see any value in preserving our colonial past like the old Fale Fono, Moto'otua Hospital, and others. We don't have a heritage body to work on preservation of some of our iconic past. Note that the building on the right side (at 1:33) was the first home of Robert Louis Stevenson in Tau'ese while his residence at Vailima was being built. In my next trip to the motherland I'm hoping to capture what stands at these locations today and perhaps post an update like a "Before & After" like my other video. You can see it at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y8ykfdRizK-6lqs.html Please feel free to share, and thank you again for taking the time to comment so very beautifully.

Thank you, Loi for your input. I hope your memories of those old times are such a gem as mine are. Yes, who can forget the Tivoli with pictures of those two trumpeters on each side of the screen. Forsgren Studio was the only reputable photo shop at the time. Thanks again and sweet memories.

Thank you for your comments, Alan. I feel that the current government are oblivious in the treasure and value of restoring some of these old buildings. Perhaps they are fixated on modernizing their landscape to keep up with the rest of the developed world. Most heartbreaking is the demolition of the original parliament house without foresight in heritage safeguards or restoration for history and posterity.

+Southseas Princess, I'm glad you found joy in watching these old images. Gosh! you've been away 40 odd years. You're absolutely right. Our landscape in Apia has changed a lot. They even wiped away our iconic Fale Fono Tuai at Mulinu'u. You might like to visit kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y8ykfdRizK-6lqs.html for more old images. I may upload some more old images in the near future so why not subscribe.

Well, you know, now that I think about it. I was probably 7 years old at that time, but I left there in 1989, then return for the first time in 2012. Thank you Harry. Yea, I actually would love to go back and visit my family and just enjoy some real good island food especially sea food there. It's great to see that the palagis are there, to help show compassion towards animals too, and if I ever come across a windfall, lol I'd come back and build a sanctuary for the animals there to retire in and for the unwanted, and probably pay a vet to help them too. Thanks again and I will watch for more old videos from you. God bless! :)

Awww, your aspiration for an animal sanctuary in Samoa is such a noble dream. I briefly lived in Samoa a few years ago and I used to take my dog "Oops" to the RSPCA at Avele for desexing, med injections, periodic checks, and flea n heart treatments. They are such a great team headed by a vet from Australia with help from voluntary students from abroad (AusAid & NZ). They get no funding from the government but they always have their chins up as they train their small team of locals with enthusiasm. I wish you well and pray that the Lotto gods swing one end of the rainbow at your feet.

Oh I'm so glad that they have that at Avele. Wow! I've been praying for something like that, and it's too bad that the government doesn't help and they really should, but you know, these governments don't care about these things, but it's good to know that they have that there. Thank you for the well wishes, it's my dream and it'll happen if God sees fit. :)

Thank you for your comments, Mountain Chief. China's influence is even more evident in Samoa nowadays. However, I am hopeful that there's still some unsung heroes back home who can stand toe to toe with foreign powers in order to maintain and enforce our freedom and identity. Time will tell.
