One thing people forget to teach in Judo is how to properly receive a judo technique when training AKA how to be a good uke. In this short video, I demonstrate how to properly receive a technique to benefit both your and your partner's training.

What a priceless reminder, thank you. I remember my own sensei emphasizing how he judged judoka not by how they threw as much as by how well they fell. Ukemi must be mastered before anything else can be learned properly.

we try and teach the kids (and some adults) in our club how to receive a throw and fall properly. Too many of them collapse, tense up or hold on and it ruins the throw and the breakfall. I learned to fall with 1000s of repetitions when I was doing Jiu-Jitsu (not BJJ) and carry that through to my Judo.

how do you do this? I can practice ukemi by myself, but when someone throws me I do not fall properly...
@Boost00130
@Boost00130 2 жыл бұрын
@@ottpsfj try and keep you Core tight, don’t bend at the waist. Also do break falls where you hold onto the belt and roll over your hand/stomach, another one holding onto the collar of someone standing and jump up to do a side break fall. Hard to describe but very good for getting you used to falling differently

Hi Vionis, Always do your warm-up properly , especially after 40, this will seriously decrease the possibility of injury. Never skip the warm-up, never skip the final stretching phase at the end of the session.

As long as your train consistent, train carefully and ensure you take care of yourself off the tatami (regular exercise, stretching and eating well) you will be able to continue to practice judo long into old age!

IMO, uke turns because they're afraid to go over their head (shoulder) correctly (at least at first). Eventually this becomes a habit that will need breaking.

When we were new white belts, we had an undying sense of enthusiasm as it was something new and novel. After getting hurt so many times by bad throws, you kinda get used to trying to save yourself and this results. Needless to say it's very hard to break this habit (took a lot of cautioning from my Sensei for me to overcome this)

I like your channel, but I respectfully disagree. I have tried taking falls both ways over many years. I find the NON-slap method, the (turn and sit method) far better for several reasons. The buttocks/pelvis has to go down first for the spine and head to roll along the mat, for all backward and several forward falls. The pelvis nearly always has to go down as close as possible to the mat to lighten the fall. The turn and sit method is much safer, easier and more effective on hard surfaces. The slap method starts from a height and allows NO rolling, and no lowering of the body. Try both methods on a harder less padded surface, (which is the origin of the methods) and you will see what I mean.

You are of course entitled to your own opinion and can practice judo in whatever way makes you feel safer, but what you described goes against the entire concept of breakfalls used in many martial arts - not just judo. As long as you learn to breakfall (or “slap”) correctly, you will be much much safer as the slap literally breaks the fall and disperses the impact evenly. This is especially important as many judo throws happen at a very high speed, making it impossible to execute the turn you described without causing injury to yourself or others. The turn method is fundamentally incorrect for judo. It also makes uke’s throws look terrible. If you watch any high level Kata competition you will not see anybody turning as their tori turns in for the throw.

@backwardwalker 2 жыл бұрын
@@SampsonJudo Thanks for replying. Again, I respectfully have to disagree. Instead of focusing on a forward fall which is harder to see the principle consider the traditional teaching of how to take a backfall. By sinking much lower and rounding the lower back, it is easier to take a backward fall safely. That is why the legs are supposed to roll upwards from a rear fall. The slap is not needed to receive a fall, if you know how to lower the pelvis and round it slightly at impact. But, if you are taught to always slap from a higher standing position, the lowering of the body and rolling action is never learned. Slapping doesn't help unless both legs are pulled out like in a double leg tackle and you are falling straight down, both legs off the floor and have no other way to disperse the impact. Please try this for yourself on a slightly harder surface , say a carpeted wooden floor, and you will see if what I say is true. Will you really slap if the surface is hard, say wood? If so, you will injure your arm and latissimus muscles from the impact and the fall will not be any safer or softer. But, if you can lower and round your pelvis until you are in a squat, the fall is easy to take, even on a hard unpadded surface, like a wooden floor found in Japanese dojos and dance halls here in USA. Can you tell me why else the legs are always taught to roll upwards from a backward fall?? The turn and sit is just a way of applying the same principle to a forward throw.

I haven't done judo for more than 2 years, but the only time I turn around is when tori is practicing the throw very slowly and stops the momentum mid-throw, meaning I won't have the rotation speed that I would have when I get thrown properly in randori. When I get hip thrown in randori I have no time or power to start turning around instead. You just have time to realize that you will get thrown and the best thing to do is to let it happen and all you can to minimize the fall is to break with your arm. Granted, I'm a beginner but I can't see how in a situation where you get thrown fast and properly how you could have time to control in what direction your body will be going and spinning. At the beginner level, I feel that every time you face someone who does this turn, they are assisting you in falling, often by lowering their weight center which messes up the throw. There's like there is a point at which you feel that the person stops resisting and then you don't get to practice the final part of the throw where you still need to apply force in a real scenario.

@Mark Tennenhouse Forgive me if I’m wrong, but in one circumstance you are being thrown while the other you are lowering the impact of a fall by compromising your own position ( I have seen something similar done in aikido) of course it is easier taking a fall this way but the thing is you aren’t really allowing yourself to be thrown the way someone attends to throw you and thus you aren’t allowing fellow judoka to understand their mistakes. I agree falling like that can be easier as your more rolling and Kano Sensei has emphasized in situations when you fall high Mae ukemi is not sufficient and you must roll to minimize damage. But it defeats the point of learning how to take a fall after trying to defend a throw.
