William Hogeland, proprietor of the “Hogeland’s Bad History” newsletter on SubStack, discusses his recent book The Hamilton Scheme: An Epic Tale of Money and Power in the American Founding.

Hogeland looks back to the enemies Hamilton had inside of the US political structures, from State Sovereigntists during the framing of the Constitution, to the Jeffersonian attempts to undermine and overturn his financial system throughout the start of the 19th Century, before wrapping up with the redemption of Hamilton’s legacy over the last few decades, and the particular role his thought played in the US’ response to the 2008 Financial crisis.

I want the government to be small when it comes to propping up giant corporations, military industrial complex, overseas wars, militarized borders, subsidizing huge agriculture and factory farm giants. So I am a small government advocate. Funny how it's only the things which help poor people which get classified as "big government".

Jefferson's December 26,1820 letter to Albert Gallatin also lays bare how Jefferson, whose views Madison was attempting to legitimate through "constitutional theory", were motivated by what he considered the existential need to maintain racialized hereditary chattel slavery. It's a doozy, but most historians consider it impolite to point out such an uncomfortable confession. They seem to think it better to grant white supremacist reactionaries entirely undeserved legitimacy, which continues to this day.
@samuelrosander1048
@samuelrosander1048 29 күн бұрын
I just read that and didn't get that interpretation. It looked more like it was saying that if individual states mandated the criminalization of slavery it would force all slave owners to leave their states to others where it was legal, and if the senate agreed to use force it would cause a secession. It sounded more like he was pointing to a very real dynamic that turned out to come true with the Civil War, and how it was dangerous to the country as a whole. In fact, the end says the opposite of what you claim: "Amidst this prospect of evil, I am glad to see one good effect. it has brought the necessity of some plan of general emancipation & deportation more home to the minds of our people than it has ever been before. insomuch that our Governor has ventured to propose one to the legislature. this will probably not be acted on at this time. nor would it be effectual; for while it proposes to devote to that object one third of the revenue of the state, it would not reach one tenth of the annual increase. my proposition would be that the holders should give up all born after a certain day, past, present, or to come, that these should be placed under the guardianship of the state, and sent at a proper age to St Domingo. there they are willing to recieve them, & the shortness of the passage brings the deportation within the possible means of taxation aided by charitable contributions. in these I think Europe, which has forced this evil on us, and the Eastern states who have been it’s chief instruments of importation, would be bound to give largely. but the proceeds of the land office, if appropriated to this would be quite sufficient." He's talking about the "general emancipation and deportation" of slaves as a good thing to come from the dynamic, and since it would not really be effectual if done a certain way, he proposed another which would "wean them off" of slavery by giving up all slaves born after a certain date (past, present or future. The date would be decided by the government) and put them in the care of the state, to be sent to Santo Domingo (from what it looks like with a quick search, they would be sent there probably as slaves, since slavery was established or re-established around 1809. Basically "end slavery here but push our newly emancipated slaves onto someone else"). He rightfully blamed the Easter states and Europe for making slavery a thing...but that doesn't excuse participation by everyone else who did. I know I'm bad at interpreting things at times, so maybe there's something I'm missing. I don't see your accusation pan out in that letter. I see a warning about the consequences of doing it in certain ways, and a suggestion for how to do it more safely (for national unity), but not an "existential need" to maintain it. Please show me what I'm missing if you think I'm just not seeing it. Full disclosure, Jefferson was an aristocrat who was very much against the concept of democracy, which is one among many reasons why I am not a fan. The slavery aspect (including one of his slaves being his wife's half-brother or some other relation) was despicable and doesn't need to be argued as such (I reject the argument about relative morality because it's just apologia for being bad when the entire history of slavery was full of people calling for its end and being openly against it). My only issue is with your interpretation of that letter, not how bad Jefferson was.

Voting is not democracy, it's just saying yes/no to something that someone else gave to you. Democracy is the whole process of making decisions as a group, formulating the solutions as a group, etc. It's perverters of reality who insist that republicanism is a branch of democracy "because look, the people are allowed to participate in elections for...uh...the people who will get to make all of the decisions autonomously of the people, and which the people have no right or power to control in any way once elected." It is nothing more than electing your rulers rather than your rulers claiming the right by bloodline. All of those other things support a healthier society, but so long as the right to make decisions (beyond who will sit on the thrones of power) is kept from the people "democracy" is a farce designed specifically to keep the people blaming each other for the actions of the rulers.
