Unboxing the Samsung Galaxy A23 5G, a budget Sammy smartphone with a sub-£300 UK price tag, 50MP camera and some decent gaming grunt. This hands-on review of the Samsung A23 5G tests the optics, runs through the OneUI features and shows off the everyday experience.
Sadly the camera tech on this budget Galaxy phone struggles compared with rivals like the Pixel 6a. That shutter speed is slow and photo quality quickly dips when lighting isn't great. Video tops off at FHD resolution too, while many of the Galaxy A23's rivals can capture 4K footage.
Gaming is perfectly possible on this smartphone, with Call of Duty, PubG etc playing with a respectable frame rate. Even Genshin Impact can kind of play alright on the lowest detail settings. But the Samsung Galaxy A23 5G does stumble and judder a lot with everyday shenanigans.
Battery life is thankfully superb and OneUI 4.1 offers up lots of decent features. But when it comes to media chops, there's only a mono speaker setup and no OLED screen. So the Samsung A23 5G does disappoint vs rivals like the Moto G82 and Oneplus Nord 2 CE. Check out my reviews of the best £300 and under budget phones for more ideas.

I bought this a23 for my younger sister, who excels in shattering smartphones. I was looking for a very budget-ish option and came across the A23, and honestly, it exceeded the expectations I had about this phone. No saying it's amazing, but extremely solid for the price tag.

Wonderful Video as always mate. One recommendation though. Perhaps consider adding a list of closest competitors in your videos or at least in written details. It would help us viewers immensely if we can quickly have probable list of alternatives. I hope this is better than recent budget A-series Samsung phones. Our experience is that they don't impress in any category, the last one we has was unresponsive and needed to be frequently restarted. We now look at new budget to mid-range phones from other brands or second-hand S-series phones. It's a better investment than living with the A-series.

They certainly can be a mixed bag, I've found the Snapdragon ones tend to be better than the Exynos A-series phones. Although this one definitely needed more memory...

The A52s is a brilliant phone (although I understand that this is pretty much where the A series peaked) and I managed to find it new for £250. The S series is handicapped in this country by being powered by Exynos instead of Qualcomm and being overpriced compared with the rivals on offer.

@@michaelball93 I've owned a number of S-series phones and even with the CPU constraints they perform well enough for my needs. I did decide though to make the jump to Google and now have a Pixel 6 Pro and I'm not missing Samsung. My partner has had a couple of A-series phones and had nothing but issues with the performance and stability. We're looking to get her a Pixel 6a, currently around £320 which seems to offer much more than similarly priced Samsung phones.

Just bought a new Samsung Galaxy A23 5G in late September for $329. It was a huge upgrade from my old phone. My favorite feature is tied between the long battery life and the 120hz display.

This phone looks better than the A73 5G. Especially the fact that A23 still has the 3.5mm jack, and 120Hz refresh rate for half the price of A73.

@@SamdevaySamsungs generally have better updates than Motorola and are generally made to last longer so I’d say go for Samsung. Of course, they will become slower after 3 years or so, but all budget phones do that.

Pretty sure if you come to Jamaica you'll see phones you don't see in other countries. The Z fold and flip are seen very frequently here. The preference for apple devices are generally down to battery life, camera quality and build quality.

i am using galaxy a33 5g and pixel 6a....had to use a33 5g from my previous note 9 due to budget issues and its not a bad phone ,if you are not a gamer or use for normal task like editing photos,videos, social media and all..its perfect..just the camera department is kind of cheap..samsung midrange phones are good,but they need need to match the price with chinese manufacturers, but yeah android updates, quality of the phone also matters...

How is it environmentally friendly?My father bought a similar model, the A13.There was also no power adapter in the box.And since the cable it comes with on both sides is type C,(Because all our power adapters are from the old ones with a normal computer USB port.) he had to buy another adapter separately.Which came in a separate box that was half the size of the phone box.And how is that more environmentally friendly?He had to get this phone after his old one broke after years of use.We don't change phones every few months.

SD 695 and 4gb RAM, well that sucks. Samsungs OneUI will drain that RAM by just booting up, the phone will lag to oblivion.

I would love this phone but it only has 4GB of RAM. That would be fine if it were running a 32-bit OS but it's using full-fat 64-bit Android 12 AND it has Samsung's bloated OneUI on top of that. Save up and get the A53 5G if you actually want to keep more than 2 apps in RAM at one time. I don't know what Samsung was thinking when they decided that the American version should only get that paltry amount of RAM.

Just get the A52 5G has under display FP sensor and stereo speakers and no teardrop and more RAM the 500 mAh battery difference is negligible. and you can get the A52 cheaper.

One good point is atleast they used ips lcd.Their amoled screens are like eye candy balloons which simply pop with minor falls and screens are forever dead.

Yep. Can confirm. 3 yrs of usage and my AMOLED screen has purple spot. The replacement repair is pretty expensive, the screen is like 1/4 the price of the phone itself.

Sadly it's to make you spend more money when you run out of storage.. either you pay for cloud storage, or buy a whole new phone from them. Similar to why they removed the headphone jack, costs them less and potentially makes you buy their expensive ear buds. I wish the SD card slot and headphone jack make a return but.....

You can get a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE for about 200 quid these days off certain sites. I would say that's an objectively better deal with SD870 inside.

You need a power adapter that has Power delivery port. A C to C is a fast charging cable.

Pretty average for the price, considering the competitors have better chipset, screen, speakers, etc. Samsung's advantage comes from its software - less buggy, less bloatwares, and more updates.

Agreed. Personally I'd take a less powerful Samsung phone over anything by Xiaomi because I hate the buggy, glitchy MIUI and I'm not a gamer at least not a phone gamer.
