Reviewing the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 after one month, to see if this fresh Wear OS 3 device is one of the best smartwatches of 2021. This 40mm version is more compact than the 44mm and Classic models, already one of my favourites for design, with smart fitness tracking and a gorgeous screen. However, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 does suffer from mediocre battery life, same as rivals like the Apple Watch.
This smartwatch is the first to use Google's new Wear OS 3 interface, albeit with a heavy Samsung influence. You've got full Play Store access, so you can download fresh faces, apps and other shenanigans. But most of the services on here come from the Korean giant, including Pay, Bixby etc.
The Galaxy Watch 4 doesn't have the same physical rotating bezel as the Classic, but the specs and features are otherwise mostly the same. While the battery life limits you to a day of use per charge unless you hack those tools, you get plenty of fitness tracking shiz to stay healthy. But ECG is for Galaxy phone owners only, and there's no iPhone support just yet.

@Ralph Reilly I'd love to know if you found a way to disable the screen turning off immediately when your wrist is at 90 degrees. option 1. turn on aod, which is too dim to use outdoors (GW4 removed the feature to keep full brightness with aod during workouts). option 2. make an exaggerated raise to wake gesture (but like mentioned, this does not work well, and is much more difficult to do while jogging).

I've watched several of this guy's reviews. I enjoy his cheeky banter and his coverage of the devices he reviews. I have the Gear S3 Frontier, the Galaxy Watch (2018), and now the Galaxy Watch 4 44mm Silver edition. I found the Watch 4 to be sleeker and more comfortable to wear and really don't miss the rotating bezel. My wrist is just under 7 inches so the 44mm looks just fine. The Gear and Galaxy Watch are both 46 mm.

If you're worried about battery life, make sure to get one of the bigger models. I've used the 44mm version for a few weeks now, and while it's true that battery life won't blow you away, it's nowhere near as bad as the Apple watch. You can expect just under two days before needing to charge again (AOD off). One day if you're using AOD, and even less if you're using LTE all the time. If you're always connected to your phone via bluetooth (with Wifi/LTE off, no AOD, auto brightness on and the heart rate set to manual rather than constant monitoring), you'll get a solid two days no problem. This is with the larger models only.

I've had the GW4C 46mm for 3 weeks and wifey's had her GW4 40mm for 2 weeks. So far the pros outweigh the cons for both of us. As class-A couch potatoes the watches have motivated us to get off our arses a bit more (not because the watch told us we were fat bastards, because we knew that anyway, but because we had to justify spaffing out over $500 for glorified sundials). They may not be the most accurate but they are indicative.

@@lukario7173 I have thought about this a lot. Samsung is a better watch in a lot of ways. But a lot of it is because of the software. I also would say for fitness it is better. Now the ticwatch is better looking in my opinion and more comfortable to wear. Battery on pro 3 is way better than GW4 and it is almost half the price if you find it on sale. And the GW4 is not twice as good as the ticwatch. So to me if you have the money get the samsung but if you don't get the ticwatch or get both...lol. And remember the ticwatch will be getting the new wear os software next year as well. So my point is they are both very good but depends what you want the watch for. Hope this helps you decide.

If you're intending to use this as a pure LTE device a lot without your phone, then avoid this watch like the plague. I had to send two Watch 4's back because the remote connection functionality that allows you to receive and respond to notifications whilst out of range of your phone simply stops working and cannot be fixed. There are a lot of complaints from people in forums experiencing the same issue and Samsung do not want to address the problem. I took one of the watches to the phone shop I bought it from and the rep played with it for about 45 minutes before conceding that the problem is inherent to the watch. If you're going to use it as a Bluetooth device and paired to your phone all the time, it's fine, but the watch is being sold as a device that can be used without your phone, which it does for a day or two, but then stops working altogether, even after resetting the device. Also, if you're going to make LTE calls without your phone, you can only get a maximum of 4-6 minutes of call time before the watch says it's too hot and needs to go into airplane mode to cool down. Honestly, the watch is absolutely awful. Steer clear.

The watch saves the battery so much that it's the only one on the market that doesn't show your current heart rate, even when you turn on the continuous measurement. Only when you open the measurement app you can see the current status. So not only does it not show ECG and blood pressure unless you have a Samsung watch, but it can't even show that heart rate to the user on the watch. I can't even set up my app or app collection on the one-click physical button (double-click doesn't count), which doesn't strike me as smart control on a smartwatch. If I look at the watch, the screen goes off after 6 seconds and I can't change it, I have to touch it. A happy user of this watch must be a very unpretentious person.

In terms of specs, both are very same not much difference at all. Only difference is classic has bezels and is made of stainless steel so more durable. Normal watch is without bezel with aluminum made. If you're into sports and use a lot then normal is fine or if you more into going out and maybe work. Classic has more better look and design in my opinion but price is almost 100 quid more so it's entirely up to personal preference.

@Sir Soma that's for sure a defective model. I leave everything on except always on display. Heart rate monitoring set to every 10 min, auto brightness, all notifications coming in, and I work out a few times a week.

Howdy! I work as a coach and I'm looking to buy the watch 4, as I would really appreciate having the ECG functionality. Will the battery last at least a full day if I'm tracking sports activity for 4-5 hours a day? I don't need GPS, music, always on display etc, but if the watch dies while I'm still working that would be a deal breaker for me.

I got the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic and WearOS 3 isn't as good as TizenOS. Samsung replicated Tizen on WearOS but I found some bugs here and there. Plus, the animation when opening apps aren't as smooth as in the original Tizen. Hopefully can be fixed with updates. It isn't a big deal per se. The good thing with WearOS is its apps library... Anyhow quite satisfy with the GW4 and having Gboard on the wrist is nice!

I went for the smaller classic, and it does look nicely like a regular watch, rather than a black dinner plate strapped to my wrist. But, although I can tell the time with it, I do struggle to see smaller text, like you often get in "complications" (I do need reading glasses). It also means you have a pretty small keyboard area. Even drawing the security pattern is a bit fiddly. I don't get why people want to track their sleep, I know if I've had a good or bad night's sleep! Therefore charging it overnight doesn't bother me at all. Pretty sure it would get through the night, but then I'd have to charge it in the morning when I'm up and about?

I have the 44m standard because I liked the look more than the classic. I've had no problems with battery. I find I can charge it just before bed while I'm having a shower and settling down, then top up in the morning while I shower and get ready. I don't have always on display because I find the wrist wake up works OK. I don't play music from the watch because I play it from my S10+, although I do use the watch to control the playback for skipping, rewinding and pausing. I am very impressed with it although navigating watch faces to download is trickier. So much crud out there filled with ads and in app purchases. Give Tizen its due, there were lots of top notch watch faces for free.

Do you have the LTE or BT version? I'm looking at getting one and although I have a smaller wrist and rather the 40mm I feel like getting the 44mm for the extra battery life. Just hope it doesn't look to big. My wrist is like 6.7". Most people say 7" wrist a 44mm would be fine.

@@IC3DR460N I have the Bluetooth version. I won't use the watch to make calls. If you order from Samsung you can always send it back. If you have Samsung store nearby then you can try it for size first. I found the larger Watch 3 with the bezel to be quite chunky. The W4 is way more streamlined.

I upgraded to the gw4 40mm from the fitbit blaze, at first it was good u can answer calls and send texts, and use features such as nfc on it, but samsung are more gimmicky imo, they add features like body comp in without making sure the most important features are as accurate as they can be, especially ive noticed with stress and sleep tracking, I'll wake up and my phone will still be listening for me snoring and the watch still counts sleep until i click on the samsung health app to stop it, and sonetimes u can wake up and fall back to sleep and it doesnt count the 2nd sleep, and stress is all over the place, it says im stressed when im doing nothing but ik fine when excersizing

In my own experience it's not usable. My 40mm watch (LTE) can only last 1 to 2 hours when I open the Komoot app for biking! Not to say the watch becomes unbearably hot every time. It does last longer with default activities tracking but still well below 1 day.

I’m changing from 12 Pro Max and Apple Watch 6 to Google Pixel 6 Pro. Doesn’t look like there’s going to be a Pixel watch next week, so the Samsung 4 might have to be my option. It’s an aluminium case I believe, I know the Apple Watch contains Nickel to which I’m allergic, so I’ve had to put a full case on it as it hurt my skin. Is there any way of finding out if the Samsung 4 has Nickel in the casing please? Thanks 🙏🏻 🙂🇬🇧
