It's time for your Matter smart home news update! Things are moving fast in the world of Matter, Thread, and the whole smart home world in general, but Samsung SmartThings is moving even faster with new partners like @Aqara , @Nanoleaf , GE Cync, and Eve Energy all joining the platform.
Samsung SmartThings Edge is about more than the Matter smart home standard and you'll get a fancy new camera feature because of it too. Edge will give you access to LAN devices too, not just Zigbee and Z-Wave devices.
But it's not all good, because @Samsung has made decisions like holding back their televisions from being Matter devices (while allowing them to be Matter controllers). So there's still a world of walled gardens being built in some cases.
All this and more in our latest tech news segment that focuses on the home automation platform known as SmartThings and the Matter smart home protocol and standard.

It’s good to see that the concern some fellow smart home commentators had regarding the longevity of SmartThings is so far proving unnecessary, Samsung seem firmly committed to it as a core element of their home appliances strategy

Saying that Samsung not bridging Zigbee and Z-Wave is “miss” is a major understatement. I’ve been buying Samsung devices for years, and this just feels like punishment for being loyal all this time. The entire point of Matter is to reduce lock-in, and instead Samsung using it to INCREASE lock-in for the oldest customers. I would have been willing to shell out for a new hub if it meant that my Zigbee and Z-Wave devices would have been accessible on Matter. I’ve had it with them pulling these moves. I’ve just setup a Hubitat and I’m transitioning away from SmartThings. So glad I’m not going to be giving them any more of my money.

They'll be reading that comment, I'm sure. I hope they catch the hint here. Loyalty is beyond important to any company and these moves are beyond painful for consumers. Even Aqara being a bridge says that they could do it...so what gives?

Hi Brian. I know you mentioned early on video that we don’t need to upgrade our ST v2 hub if we have those other devices that are Thread border Routers, but my question would be if there are any advantages in having ST’s own Thread Border Router as I start building my Thread Network? I already have 4 active Thread networks (from Apple, Amazon, Google) and all my matter-over-thread devices still successfully connected to my ST V2 hub. It’s just not natively utilizing its own Thread network and relying on the one of the other four. Also aware of losing half the memory and processing speed going to v3. Maybe if it ain’t broke don’t fix??
@AutomateYourLife
@AutomateYourLife 4 ай бұрын
If it ain't broke is just right. :) Thread networks are about to become one. Watch this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a9FpqK93p7fVeGQ.html and it's towards the end. So that means if you have a Thread border router at all in your home, and you're using Matter, it's going to be shared easily. This will take a while, so your option of going to the V3 (or even the Station) lets you go that Matter/Thread route immediately :)

@@AutomateYourLife Thanks Brian. As usual, always helpful. To clarify, I already am able to use matter-over thread devices in ST by way of the other Thread Border Routers in house, but just wasn’t sure if any advantages of adding the ST’s native Thread Border Router or not. I can wait anyways until can unify all the thread networks, but is it worthwhile to add ST hub as another Thread Border Router for more direct Matter/Thread integration with ST (my main hub)? Will watch your other video now. 👍🏼

Manufacturers are going to isolate within matter - they have to make money. It's like Bluetooth. At the basic level, any Bluetooth devices will work with each other. However, there are other features that will go on top of it that various manufacturers implement via their software to give a much different experience. It's like using apple AirPods with a non-apple phone. It will work however, you won't get access to the full suite of features. That's what Matter/Thread is going to become in the smart world. I am completely expecting that hence why I am switching from Google/Amazon to Apple Homekit. It is the most reliable and consistent at the moment. Samsung dropped the ball on not bridging the ZigBee/zwave devices into matter. Frankly, I haven't added anything to my smart things hub in years anyways. It is only acting as a bridge for my zwave and ZigBee devices which I currently bridge into home kit anyways via home assistant(which will support matter/thread) and home bridge. So smart things not doing that won't be missed.

Samsung not updating their TVs to be matter devices has me worried. Companies not updating their devices to be matter devices but only Matter controllers is what is going to be the achilles heel of the standard I think. Every company wants to be able to control all the smart devices of their competitors but they don't want their competitors to control theirs. Also, the compatible Aqara devices has me kinda confused. They mention curtain and blind controllers as compatible. However, I don't see any Aqara controllers when searching, only curtain and blind drivers. No Matter bridging is a HUGE, HUGE miss. They seem to be treating SmartThings as their own walled-garden approach to mimic Apple's approach; the benefit of Matter being to make it easier to bring in a lot of 3rd-party devices. For those of us who have been on SmartThings for quite some time, but are also Apple-centric for the rest of our homes, still having to resort to something like Homebridge is frustrating. It is especially frustrating that both Apple and Samsung are playing this way, despite coming together in the alliance to build Matter. It seems that Matter is largely going to wind up being a one standard all the 3rd party "thing" vendors can code to in order to work in any of the big players' ecosystems. That alone is a good thing & very beneficial to the industry as a whole, but it is nevertheless disappointing that they can't play together at a deeper level. Moreover, not being able to bridge amplifies the missed opportunity of Z-Wave either ignoring or being ignored by Matter. For me, it means that Z-Wave will be exiting my home over the next few months, likely replaced by Lutron Caseta. Z-Wave works well for me, but they have a history of limiting themselves from wider adoption.

Any information "why Samsung left without Matter ST Wifi & Home Connect hubs"? ☠

I think they're still working on it :) Might be a memory thing though if they can't do it in the end. That's doing more than just being a smart home hub right? So if they didn't up the memory/processing power, it might not work out well.

Grrrr, I hate it when I'm right. I knew Samsung would give the middle finger to users when it comes to older Samsung devices. Matter, smatter. Where is Mr. Sockey?

All of this just reinforces the inner voice that already told me to stay away from SmartThings years ago. I don't believe that they have honest interest in interoperability.

They're still doing a lot of good on that front. I mean, I did open with Matter, Thread, and a ton of ways they were giving that on existing devices. So I get the take on the TVs and some of the Galaxy stuff. I do...and that's why I said it! But it's not all bad man!

@@AutomateYourLife I hope you're right. I don't have high hopes. They seem to be pushing SmartThings features right in the midst of the biggest interoperability push in the industry yet.

For all the hype, Samsung continues to be a disappointment to long-time users. They have continued to ignore the need to provide an upgrade path for folks, like me, with existing V2 or earlier hubs w/o thread to the new Aeotec hubs. The idea of Edge drivers will further confuse folks who are trying to navigate the whole Thread/Matter STANDARDS. Edge isn't a standard, but Samsung's way of trying to give their device users a service like Apple's Homekit, or so it seems to me. Brian, our friend, Samsung must have shipped you a 55-gallon drum of their Kool-Aide!!! I'm not being critical, we ALL have our favorite flavors of Kool-Aid. Samsung's flavor in not one of mine!

ahahahhaa, to date...Samsung has never shipped me anything. Not one darn thing. I'm actually so annoyed with that. Like...come on. Anyways, I'm liking what Apple's doing too to be honest. Samsung's got a lot going on here and yep, they've left some gaps. Still, from an overall perspective we've gone from: Needing to look at upgrading our V2's (I don't think most will need to now), from cloud to local (primarily), and from 1 hub to many. The new integration for phones, tablets was expected and will be the entry point for many. So there's lots of good and we'll see where it goes! I don't like some of the things they're doing either, and honestly the TV thing REALLY bugs me.

The upgrade path is to purchase the V3 hub. I'm not sure what you're requesting?
@AutomateYourLife
@AutomateYourLife Жыл бұрын
@@verygoodbrother ohhh I can answer that. It's VERY painful to switch hubs with Smartthings because of how they do Z-Wave and ZigBee connections. There's no tool to move over to a new hub. So upgrades are basically building your whole smart home again

What's the smart home one piece. I don't want companies that don't want to work together. Wtf is zigbee and all these other foolish words you use. Thread, zwave. What the heck is all this. So annoying.

Zigbee is the "thin" protocol used to comunicate wirelessly among the smart devices (like smart bulbs) without interfering with Wi-Fi channels.. It also allows to extend the range between said devices by using hops.

Why would you use smartthings as your central hub since it is not in control of Amazon, Google, or Homekit? Those systems will let smartthings be UNDER them but they will not be UNDER smartthings. You better off just use them to begin with...samsung just wants to act as a middleman between them and you, why? You can just go directly to them. S mb smartthings is dead...was for last 3 years!
