When a wet device arrives at our workshop, the first thing to do is immediately disconnect the battery connector to prevent further damage to the motherboard and short circuits. Then, we proceed to remove the back cover, the screws of the intermediate casing, the NFC antenna and the SIM tray. Carefully we lift the motherboard of the device.
Next, we perform a thorough visual inspection under a microscope for signs of moisture and corrosion. In our case, we found traces of humidity and sulfate in several places, including the battery connector and the shield.
In the process, we discovered that a capacitor had come loose from the motherboard due to corrosion. To fix it, we applied some flux and used a hot air station at 380ºC and 10% airflow to solder the condenser. It is critical to keep airflow to a minimum to prevent condenser drift and to obtain a bright, strong weld.
Once the capacitor is soldered, we use a piece of cotton and clean contacts to remove the sulfate from the motherboard. In more severe cases, we could use an ultrasonic washer at 60ºC for deep cleaning. We also cleaned the screen connector, which had sulfate.
After cleaning, we tried to power on the phone using a recycled battery connector, and although it powered on fine, it wouldn't charge the battery. We removed both shields for corrosion and found quite a bit on the second shield, especially in areas where more current is handled.
To remove the shielding, we use a hot air station at 400ºC and 40% airflow, prying with a surgical scalpel. For the second shield, we prefer to cut it with precision cutting pliers, avoiding applying too much heat to the CPU. We carefully clean the affected area and apply flux and paste tin to reactivate the old tin, using a hot air station at 350ºC and 30% flux. Then we clean again and test the device.
The mobile now charges correctly, and the only remaining problem is the yellow triangle indicating the absence of the NFC antenna. We put it on and check the device again. Finally, we have managed to solve the problem of the wet mobile. For this repair, we will charge around 70 euros, an appropriate price for this type of breakdown.
