There is no greatest lock of all time. Time does not stand still. There are exceptional stand-out locks; and players with the so-called 'X' factor. Sam Whitelock falls into that class, within which he joins with other exceptionally talented 'X' factor locks. His longevity was 'X' factor, that is a given. He will remain a legend; that is a given. His absence will be felt; but only until the next 'X' factor lock evolves. God bless you Samuel Whitelock: All Black number 1104. Meur ras for all the great pleasures (and countless agonies) watching your performances has given me🏴‍☠☘.

On a similar vein with regards to the Pathway, the NH do an U18 Six Nations, is there an equivalent for NZ? There has to be caution though to ensure a late developer is not overlooked/bypassed, that those chosen to play for higher honours keep 'grounded' & realistic & not let their ego override their development/achievements (to date).

If not already, the ABs should be having a series of camps for the various positions (i.e. get all of the 9's from Super Rugby (wider groups), U20s, maybe even NPCs & Schoolboys into a 2-3 day camp so that the AB coaches can share their thoughts of what they want/require, can see each one close up, understand their personality etc. And have similar camps for Locks, Loosies, Wings etc. Some kids/players are late developers so that needs to be understood & catered for as well to identify/help the likes of those now playing for other countries get a fair crack of the whip (time, money & effort) permitting. Having said that, no one wants 'n' identical clones of one another so the diversity & different strengths need to be encouraged but they would all need to do their core roles & have a required mental & physical skillset/attributes & as Jono Gibbs said, they need to be a Team Player. i.e. If you have a chance of scoring (but could get tackled) but there is someone else in a better/safer position to score then pass the ball - no excuses.

Mate, I'm an old Celt, so less time for the English than you, boet; but Itoje is a superb lock. Anyone who understands the position knows that no lock shines in an under-performing side or from being mix-matched with numerous lock combos.. Look at Etzebeth as an example. In a mis-firing or losing Bok side he is often ineffectual and gets subbed. Matfield was the better lock, under intense pressure, than almost all locks, bar Samuel Whitelock, in my opinion. Botha/Matfied were superb. Itoje/ Lawes; superb. But split them up too often?

The biggest concern for the All Blacks is blindside.The French,the South Africans and Irish have absolute tall monsters. All their players are over 6ft 6 in’s tall.Ireland got guy who 6ft 9ins.All these guys are great in the line outs. These guys are big,tall and mobile. We can’t afford have three short loose forwards in the All Blacks.Shannon Frizell is very hard to replace. Blackadder is not the answer.He is too injury prone and he hasn’t really dominated at test level. Blackadder is not tall enough for international blindside.

Finau is the perfect replacement for Frizell and is huge. He's 196 cm, and at 115 kgs he's as big as any blindside in the world. Defensively better than Frizell but Frizell has a better running game. Word is Frizell will be back in 2025.

@AK-wc9rl
@AK-wc9rl Ай бұрын
@@KernowekTim I don't think they will win it because of their age profiles. Many of the current Boks are on the wrong side of 30. Impossible to replace the likes of Eben, PSDT, Kolisi, Faf, Malherbe, Damian de Allende etc who will in all likelihood not make the next RWC, or at least won't be as good as they are now. Duane has already retired. Even with these guys at their prime in last year's RWC, they needed an element of luck to win their knockout games, and those games could have so easily been lost. Without them it will be that much harder come 2027 imo.
