An exclusive interview brought to you by British Airways… the origin story of the dual coder, whose trademark step and acceleration devastated opposition across rugby league & rugby union. Twenty years on from scoring THAT try in 2003, Jason Robinson’s invited Tins to his first-ever rugby club, for a trip down memory lane, to relive the glory years and reflect on the place where it all began for him; The Huslet Club in Leeds.

What an amazing talent and a great bloke Billy Whizz is. Was a privilege to watch him for Wigan, GB RL and later England RU. I remember his try against the Brisbane Broncos in front of 51,000 in Brisbane. That shut the Aussies up. I was also at Suncorp when he made that break to feed Will Greenwood in RWC2003 quarter final. Magic rugby player.

Being from Wigan and about the same age as Robinson, I got a first hand view at what made him such a great player. Back then Wigan had vision about what they wanted to achieve and it wasn't just by buying the best players available that brought them success, it was to create a culture within a group that was willing to learn from each other. Like Robinson says in this interview, that Wigan team was the best of the best and to fit in, you had to be the best of you or else you didn't play. Players like Edwards, Farrell, Offiah, Paul, Betts, the list goes on. They didn't just become part of that culture, they created it by pushing each other that extra step. For me both League but especially Union missed an opportunity with the success Robinson had in Union. The prejudice towards League should have shortened and if that happened, who knows where Union and League would be in England now. I know kids that play Union now and they STILL turn their noses up at League, but why? The reason comes down to the roots of rugby League and even though the likes of Farrell and Edwards have become outstanding Union coaches, English Rugby Union (RFU) will always hold that grudge because it's ENGLISH Rugby players that formed the game of League. Union in England could and should be the top team in the world....yet ignorance and snobbery will always rule over common sense!
