Actually, the true ending is the season 5 finale. The game Samurai Jack: battle through time is canon, but the secret ending is an alternative ending. Genndy Tartakovsky even stated that he preferred the original ending to the secret ending. It's also makes no sense for Ashi to survive when her literal existence is so closely intertwined with Aku. Killing Aku should cause Ashi to cease to be. Samurai Jack ending on a bittersweet note just seemed like the proper way to end the series because Jack was always meant to give up something to defeat Aku. Successfully returning to the past to defeat Aku and undo his future always meant that Jack would lose the friends and allies he made in that time. Ashi should be no different.

Something always bugged me about how the show ended. I get that Ashi disappeared because killing Aku in the past means she was never born, but why did it take so long? Are we supposed to believe she was fine for the months it would have taken to get all of Jack's old teachers together, but causality suddenly kicks in during the wedding? And if causality does matter shouldn't Aku's death create a paradox, since the new timeline's Jack never would have met Ashi? Then there's the fact that neither Jack or Ashi realised this would happen. Jack's explicit goal was to change the past and stop Aku's version of the future from existing. It never occured to either if them that changing history might change history? If they knew Ashi would disappear and went back to destroy Aku anyway, that would make Ashi's sacrifice seem noble. It might even give Jack a reason to hesitate when it comes time to deliver that final blow. However, the cannon ending just makes Jack and Ashi seem kind of dumb. The answer to all of theses questions is that the creator wanted an twist ending that would tug at peoples heart strings and sacrificed everything else to make it happen. Okay. Rant over. TL,DR: Ashi's death was manipulative and made no sense.

It seemed weird to me also, but at least she felt it like immediately and i took it as prolly between 1 or 2 weeks or a handful of days for her to dissapear, since they were in love and all cartoon logic can pretend the invitations went out immediately and jacks friends arrived quickly. Maybe the reason why she didnt dissapear immediately like she should have was because aku was cosmic and his magic was like reality bending, took a bit for the universe to iron out such a huge wrinkle like a dark god and centuries of aliens and killer robots just dissapearing. I think she should of dissapeared almost immediately after akus death and then his return home, though a happy celebration, when allowed to reflect after in solitude would provide the somber bittersweet moment.

For both explanation and amusement value, it _might_ be a reference to what sci-fi writter Kelly Turnbull (whose work may or may not have been known by Genndy Tartakovsky) wrote in 2014 ( a couple years before Season 5 was made), that "time travel more or less runs on BS" (as in, the LESS you think about time travel, the more efficiently it works and the less paradoxes are created). If you notice, Ashi was A-OK until her walk towards the wedding, when she suddendly realized that "without Aku, [she] can not exist" - and promptly dissapear. Fans of Turnbull work have theorised, Ashi was well until SHE created the paradox by overthinking it. If that is the case, if the events of the game's secret ending are followed, she simply thinks "ok, never mind, there's a piece of him still existing, I'll be OK" and nothing happens. That easy.

Maybe they just didn't consider the end-result? Maybe the universe needs time (as silly as it sounds) to undo everything? Since in Samurai Jack time is lineal, it is clear that without Aku, Ashi and the future S.Jack was in does not exist. If Aku exists, not only Ashi but everyone from S.Jack's travels also would exist, which means the Scotsman and the rest. It has to be noted that this show not only had heavy influences from SciFi and other fantasy works, but obviously Japanese story telling, and S.Jack was shown to be inspired by a character extremely similar to Ogami Itto from Kozure Okami. This is important because the story of Kozure Okami has a bitter sweet ending, and many can tell that there are great Japanese shows and stories that also have these tropes. Japan has a great attraction towards sappy stories and depressed characters, not in a gloomy way, but in the caring way. In a sense this is the clear image we get of S.Jack at the end of the last season when he stands up after he sees the lady bug. This is like the saying that says "Better to have known love and lost it, than to have not known love at all". In essence, great characters don't necessarily get the happy ending we expect, for when S.Jack defeated Aku, his timeline was restored along with all of the people that Aku destroyed after sending S.Jack into the future, which of course includes his family and country. Ashi in a way represented a moral dilemma for S.Jack, to be selfish and stay with a woman created by the evil he has been fighting for half a century and that he fell in love with only to damn all of the victims of Aku which of course included his family, or sacrifice his own selfish desire and be a real hero saving countless of lives from Aku's reign of terror that spanned into the future.

He did not save the victims of Aku. He stopped them from ever existing. This is not a good thing. It would have been much better if he deafeted Aku in the future, rebuilding from there. Also, if aku is defeated in the past then he could not have interacted with jack in the future causing all kinds of paradoxes.
@EternalRoman
@EternalRoman 2 жыл бұрын
@@JeroenDoes The paradox was made the moment Aku sent him to the future, every time Jack tried to return he would spend the time in the future that was made. The moment Jack was able to return to the past at the precise instant that he was sent, indeed he undid the future, as you said, prevented all of those people from existing. The people that Jack saved were not the ones in the future, I suggest you read my comment well, I meant he saved the people from the past, especially his parents. They were the ones that initially were tortured and killed, and subsequently the future gave birth to all of the characters we saw on the show. Hence Ashi was not to exist, because she was part of that future, but also she was part of Aku, and with the latter vanquished all of his line was to be erased. As I said, it is a bitter sweet ending, but it poses the clear point of the dilemma of being a hero; be selfish and care more for the people he met in the future and also forget his mission of saving the people from HIS TIME, being selfish and let all those innocents perish for the sake of a damned future? In order to spare the pain of the people from that possible future, it needed to be unmade, and Jack wouldn't be a hero by immersing himself on his own personal wishes. The path of a true hero is almost always a sad one.
@pepperedash4424
@pepperedash4424 2 жыл бұрын
Did the bitter sweet ending have to be a knockoff of the ending for Gurren Laggan? Samurai Jack choosing to remain in the future to avoid erasing its people would have been a bitter sweet ending as Samurai Jack would be giving up the life and people he oncs knew.
@EternalRoman
@EternalRoman 2 жыл бұрын
@@pepperedash4424 Once again, you are forgetting that Samurai Jack had a mission for what he was trained all of his life. His own father sent him to train around the world with different cultures before he even met Aku, so Jack could be more prepared than his own father whom had imprisoned Aku in the first place. When Jack faced Aku and was hurled into the future it meant that he lost against Aku and as such all of the damned distopian future existed due to this fact. His entire family was killed, as well as his people along millions of others. Jack's defeat at the hand of Aku made the horrible future that we saw him in. As for "copying" the bitter sweet ending, like I said, Japan has hundreds of bitter sweet ending stories, so Samurai Jack though being an American show was still heavy influenced by Japan's own trope... I mean the protagonist is an actual Japanese and a Samurai so...

In the original ending just after the lady bug lands on Jack he is teleported to the God's of good where they return Ashi to Jack as a reward for his journey. When talking about time travel, the argument that Ashi would stop existing falls apart when Jack slays Aku in the past. If she disappeared, then the entire series should have never existed, least not with Aku having conquered the world cause he died. He would have never made Ashi and she would have never returned Jack to the past to slay Aku. The only way the series and the Samurai that we know and love can exist is if the timeline splits so both futures exist. Therefore Ashi would still exist, because that future wouldn't be erased. If the timeline was truly linear, then best case scenario would be Ashi lives and dies with age or combat alongside Jack. But once she dies, the Aku part of her would unknowingly keep going, growing in strength till it turns into Aku, fully regenerated and very, very confused. Then he shrugs and conquers the unsuspecting world. Happy ending we get in the game, but also a twist that lets the series exist in a linear timeline.

Here is my head cannon based on the video game ending where Ashi does not vanish: Samurai Jack realized that since Ashi did not vanish, the timeline where Aku's evil is law also exist. This means that by destroying Aku he made an alternative timeline. Jack wishing to help his friends in that timeline, dresses up as the battle King we saw in the episode where he found and fought the Portal guardian and decides to battle him again. Jack now successfully beats him as the prophesy stated and uses this portal to travel in the future in the original timeline to free his friends from Aku. He travels back, goes to Aku's tower where the rebellion happens in the last episodes of season 5 and defeats him again, freeing people from Aku. He then says goodbyes to his friends and once again goes back to the past in his alternative happy timeline. The end.

The way I see it is something unexpected happened in the timeline which changed the Guardian's original prophecy of King/Barbarian Jack to never come to pass. What could it be? I love your concept, but I don't see Jack being selfish or stupid enough to resurrect Aku just to resurrect Ashi. Instead, I propose that he feels regret not only for Ashi, but for the alt timeline he abandoned. He never actually killed Aku in the future, only the past. Who's to say that timeline doesn't still exist as its own thing? The gods don't seem to care all that much, so Jack has to be the one to save them once and for all.

I'm curious Has anyone ever read the comic book Ending to Samurai Jack? Because it does show the True/Intentional Ending of Sanurai Jack. And I honestly prefer it on some level compared to the 5th season Ending You should try and find it by looking up Samurai Jack: Jack the Legend To sum it up, Jack gave up on going to the past and focused on the future. What he's done in this timeline and the allies he's gathered, he has an army behind him as he announces that they've finally mapped out/ tracked the Teleportation Pattern and spots of Aku's hideout. So even if Aku runs, it's only a matter of time before Jack and the others put an end to Aku. It ends with Jack and his allies riding over to Aku's liar. Open ended, unlike the animated Ending, but it still sticks with me

After watching and reading other people's take. I'm just gonna do this then... *Breathes in* The portal was for future Jack after the events of the series and before the Battle Through Time (The Secret True Ending's final scene). For some reason years into the future after defeating Aku and Ashii died, Jack at some point decided to go on a Journey. He comes across many challenges and becomes king of a... well... kingdom. I say this because obviously, the crown and cape are not from Japan but then again, it is also obvious that with some gray on his beard, he did somehow age, which we did not see in the 50 years before defeating Aku. He had grown beards before but never with gray. To avoid confusion, let us call this Jack "King Jack", and the one we followed in the series as "Series Jack". Now when the prophecy said: "Only one man has been prophesized to defeat me, and that man is the only man who can use this time passage.", it could mean that YES, it was Jack as shown in the picture, but not Series Jack... at the guardian's words: "Not yet." So it had to be Series Jack, but in the future. Not an alternate version of him. But then there was a scene later where Series Jack returned to this portal and we saw it destroyed, with the guardian's glasses, lying on the ground, broken. Some have said it was Aku who did this but I have another view. What if King Jack defeated the Guardian and entered into the portal BEFORE Series Jack arrived to see the wreckage? Hear me out... I already established earlier that Jack aged when he became King Jack and that it was THIS version of Jack that would defeat the Guardian and use the Time Portal. Let's just say that Jack spent around 1-2 years to reach this point. If we count the 50 years he was thrown into the future, this point in time would have been 51-52 years from Jack's original time. He was 25 when his journey started and when he returned to his own time after 100 years of time passing, he began to age again. If after 52 years (77 year old Jack) and the 100 year mark where Series Jack returned to the portal, King Jack visited it to alter the events of time to somehow save Ashii. Then this would mean that the prophecy still came to pass. Now the problem here is that when Jack defeated Aku, the future was changed. But what if whatever happened to the world, the Guardian and the Time Portal wouldn't have been affected? They would only be affected by the progression of time and exist regardless of the differences in the progression of time. In other words, the space containing the Guardian and the Time Portal is an isolated space. He would always be alive before King Jack defeated him and would die or disappear along with the Time Portal right after. Still with me? Now what would him saving Ashii result in? King Jack's existence would then be erased and will be overwritten by the Secret True Ending's final scene. A sacrifice, that knowing him for 5 seasons and more from the fanbase, would not hesitate to do. So as a fan... I request those fans who can animate or are have connections... Please let us have an animated short where King Jack (77+ years old) fights the Guardian and goes back in time to save Ashii.

Even if she grows to be a completely different person (wich for narative purposes ofcourse I’d prefer not too for a happy ever after) I think he’d still find peace in at least having seen his love for one final time, getting some needed closure

But that way it wouldnt be as weird to see all his frineds still alive. Ending wise since they wanted to have the love interest i think I think she should of dissapeared almost immediately after akus death causing a sad emotionally painful moment for jack, and then his return home, though a happy celebration, when allowed to reflect after in solitude would provide the somber bittersweet moment. It just kind of weird she lasted for what seemed like weeks.

What I like to think is that, because Jack was seen in Aku's future as a unifying force of heroism under the enslaved masses and freedom fighters, all of which who looked up to Jack as a hero if not their de-facto leader (even if Jack did not want that title), Jack adopted that experience when he returned to his own timeline to unify the world. He already traveled the world once in his youth before fighting Aku, then traveled it several times during his 50+ years in the future, he can do it again in the past. I know nothing of Japanese history or culture but even I can tell that the cape and crown he wore was not of Japanese design. My theory is that Jack unified the world in the past when he returned so that, similar to Aku but in a "good" way. Like his father once said after beating Aku the first time, "we must be prepared should this evil ever return", and Jack knew that "we" meant the entire world. Jack not only rules Japan, but he is the ruler of the Earth and his outfit is meant to show that he is more of a universal leader than a ruler of Japan only. The portal was only showing Jack at his peak years where Jack had prepared the world for an ideal future. Maybe he uses the portal when his "quest has come to an end" to do it in another time period, idk. I already know Samurai Jack had a series of sort-of official comics where this old Jack design was a completely different story: Jack could age normally in Aku's future, and he was about to lead a coalition of different freedom fighters that he met throughout the show for a final assault against Aku, with Jack as their de-facto leader. We don't know what the implied ending of the comic series would be after that. That ending is fine, but I feel like it ends too early. I never had an issue with the Season 5 finale and I actually kind of like the bittersweet idea behind it, despite how oddly forced Ashi's timed disappearance was (why not immediately? why conveniently during the wedding?). It leaves a lot of room for interpretation while still showing that Jack has accomplished his overall goal, and learned so much more in the past few days of his life than arguably the past 50 years, and still managing to smile at the end. I feel like the secret ending of Battle Through Time was just an attempt to retcon the series ending for butthurt fans who didn't get the perfectly happy ending where everyone wins. I don't have a problem with it being a what-if scenario, but everyone insisting that's the real ending just cause that's the one they prefer is kinda shitting on what Genndy wanted in the first place. Time travel is an incredibly confusing trope to implement btw, and I don't think Samurai Jack did it correctly but I try to overlook that because then it makes you wonder if Jack's adventure did nothing for anyone in the future since none of them will even exist or be where they are without Aku, so all that really mattered in the end was Jack. It's confusing.

... This theory, can/is technically correct; in fact, all theories involving Samurai Jack are technically Correct. The thing about Time travel in any story is that it's incredibly f*cked from start to finish unless you establish how time travel work's in the story you've written. Such as Manifest Destiny where we have no free will or time becomes mutable in the theory of schrodeinger's cat where time is as it is, both timelines can't exist so you either need to make time work where you do exist or you don't. Rick and Morty explained this better in Season 2, Episode 1; Involve something with time travel or manipulation, then everything is theoretical as you become a living theory of what's to happen next and you either fix it or get boned. Samurai Jack worked for so long because instead of establishing rules for time travel, it uses time travel to start the epic and doesn't bother using it until the end, being a launch point instead of using it in constant, the ability to travel through time to create complex's in the story that would bite the writers in the ass later; where this somewhat comes full circle. The time portal could have been used by an older Jack, the comic book ending of Samurai Jack; which I think would have been a far better ending could have taken place first, Samurai Jack killing Aku in the 'AKU' Timeline as the Regal King and then defeat the guardian of the time portal to either return to his time or beat Aku again. Maybe go back a moment to in the timeline where Jack LOST his sword of some form and the King Jack take's his place at the final moment when Jack and Ashi leaves. Even though Samurai Jack got a perfect ending from both the show AND the game itself 'Battle Through Time;' the ending is left too loose for fans wanting the show to end one way or a different way and in turn it creates theories and theory vid's like this. If there's anything to learn from the theory video; if your going to include time travel in a story, establish rules how time work's, stick to them as if they are a religion and make sure when the story ends; to cut off EVERYTHING, kill the ability to travel through time (like dropping a monster into a volcano where you can witness it's death safety making sure it can't get back up) and to keep a fan or reader to go back and poke holes in it again.

Some have found the Season 5 ending be bittersweet, I found it to be horribly confusing. Given the series implies a linear timeline especially. After all, if you kill Aku in the past AFTER he has already sent past Jack into the future, which means there is no Ashi in the future, then that means there is no Ashi to bring Jack BACK from the future to kill Aku in the past, which creates a self feeding loop of paradoxes. Either there is no linear time and as such Ashi shouldn't have disappeared, or there is linear time and it is impossible for Jack to slay Aku in the past....buuut that is not what the final episode shows which makes it horribly confusing.

The reason why Jack didn’t appear back to the guardian in a foretold way is AKU slayed them after Jack lost his sword. Once AKU knew the one power to stop/repel him was out of the picture he did in fact destroy all time manipulation devices and any force between. Furthermore AKU is the master of all dark arts and is the only being with time magic. He could easily overturn a foretold prophecy. The Jack not aging theory is open for interpretation on viewers understanding. Could be AKU magic, time paradoxes, story writing, or it’s a cartoon and the artists love Jack and not Old Man Jack.

The ending we got was so fucking insulting to me, but not for the reasons you might expect. I could've come to terms with Ashi vanishing from existence after they defeated Aku since that's already what I naturally expected, but then...she didnt. They had her fall over (to psych us out I guess) and then she just goes "I felt him leave me..." which, to the viewer, is only going to make them thing "oh, so only the AKU part of her stopped existing". They then go on to have a montage that takes place over God knows how long, and then out of fucking NOWHERE during their wedding during some indeterminate time later, THEN logic decides to fucking "kick in" and delete her from existence. ALL other media I've ever seen that covers similar concepts got it right, with character's older selves vanishing instantly or just a few seconds after their younger self dies, never once have I ever seen a depiction where they not only does the character live on for a while and then suddenly vanish some time later. Know why? Because most writers are smart enough to know THAT DOESN'T WORK. They deliberately psyched us out and then showed us an entire fucking montage of "oh, I guess everything is alright" only to then go JUST KIDDING LOL

This actually fits the ending we got if you think about it. While he didn't use that exact portal he did use a portal at the time he became a leader who motivated all the people that came to his aid to fight against Aku. While he did have a long beard at around that time he didn't wear a crown, making the crown more of a metaphor than an actual crown. If he travelled back to the moment he left sooner he could have lost to Aku since he wasn't skilled enough to defeat him yet.

Part of the reason Samurai Jack doesn't age is due to the magical sword. I'm not saying he gets his powers from it, like Thor in the MCU. But, it definitely grants him above human and even above animal abilities. Think to the jump good episode. Here, we have aa race of primates that evolved to jump impossibly high distances. They train him to do so, he out jumps them all. This man can cross blades with robots that can move way faster than humans, can out run bullets and is strong enough to cut through steel. It's not really hinted at, but to the things Jack can, one can't be human. Originally, I theorize that the point of the show having Jack come so close to going back but either failing or giving it up to save someone else was the general narrative. Sometimes, when you lose something, you never get it back. And even if you did, who you have become after losing it would make it awkward or impossible to accept having it again. You lose one thing and end up again 10 times as much. They ruined that when they had him go back. We all knew what would be undone if he did ever go back. I always thought the Spartan episode was truly how it was meant to end.

The final ending, while bittersweet, still ends on a nice note where Jack comes to terms with losing Ashi, something the audience, now adults, can better relate to. There are few problems with this theory: I don't think Jack would return to a time where Aku exists, he simply wouldn't risk Aku escaping. Also just because he can use the portal when he is older, doesn't mean he is aware of that fact, nor he would want to fight the guardian again, and even if he returns, what would he do? Kill other Jack and replace him? He would just return to past as an old man and it doesn't guarantee saving Ashi. Also that guardian must have appeared after Aku became a ruler. Its not normal for a green skinned person to exist without Aku.
