I think the real reason Ochiba wants to kill Toranaga is probably that Toranaga is the only one who knows that the heir isn’t Taiko’s son (He shot blanks on 100 women and only hit the jackpot with her? Anyone would know something’s fishy). She might fear that Toranaga might expose the illegitimacy.

I have a feeling that Torunaga pillowed with Ochiba and he is the father of the Taiko's heir, which the Taiko doesn't know about and the first wife (I forgot her name knows). And I have a feeling Ochiba fell for Torunaga for her to have this so much hatred for him, where her feelings weren't reciprocrated. The way Torunaga and Ochiba stared at each other on the scene where the Taiko was on his deathbed made me feel like something was going on, where the Taiko hinted that Torunaga likes beautiful women.

The brothel scene is honestly so underrated. It's easily one of the best scenes in the entire show. Mariko being self-conscious when Kiku showed up; Kiku actually servicing Mariko knowing what she wants; Mariko wanting to give in but reigns it back when she remembers her duty (i actually thought they were gonna show some flashback of her and john doing it because she seemed so hot and bothered already); Mariko intentionally mistranslating John (out of jealousy 👀). The cinematography with Kiku blending in the background as Mariko comes to the foreground with her translation also changing from 3rd POV fo 1st... and she rarely uses "I". Damn. I know John was hard. 😩 Gotta give props to the writers and director for making this brothel scene so tasteful when they had every opportunity to show nudity but opted out for gratuitous scenes. Instead, we get these intense yet character driven moments for both Kiku and Mariko... Also, Lady Ochiba 😩.

I think Toranaga is protecting Mariko by sending John to the willow world. The rumour mill is working overdrive obviously and is putting Mariko at great risk as a married woman

The first few minutes revealed that Mariko was unaware of his father’s plans and held contempt for Hidekatsu Toda-sama even then as she felt her father was discarding her, so much so that when Toranaga revealed truth bombs to her, clearing up her misunderstanding, i was literally shouting at the screan “YES! THANK YOU!” So much so that the next door neighbour knocked on my door to check if i was OK. Lol And it puts Hidekatsu Toda-sama in a more sympathetic light, though of course, we still disapprove of the Domestic violence. But it is shown that Mariko disdained his marriage to Buntaro from the beginning since, and i didnt know this until this episode, she views him as below his station as evidenced by her comment in the flashback about how her father is discarding him, and also by his comment to Toranaga about how his father should have married her better. And Toranaga Knows. And Kiku-dono knows. And she was setting something up, but Mariko caught herself.

Taiko is an inactive/retired regent. Professionally, he's still a shogun, but much less active in political & military matters & the council of regents where Ishido & other lords is ruling now, is the group that handle those matters. The reasons of being a taiko could be because of old age or sickness. Kuroda was Ochiba's uncle. Kuroda's younger sister was Ochiba's mother. He wasn't a shogun, but he managed to unite half of Japan. He could've been a shogun if Mariko's dad didn't enact a coup d'état against him & won. That's why Ochiba here is very ambitious to seize power from Toranaga. She thinks she has the right as both a descendant of Kuroda clan, a consort of the taiko. Since she's a woman & can't get involved directly in political or military matter, she uses men around her such as Ishido & other regents, including her own son whom she pushes to be the next shogun.

I guess the part where they want to find a plan that isn't certain death, they don't really have an idea. I think in this case the Anjin comes with a briliant idea to conquer the castle.

Just for information. But this might be good to know. Historically, the Taiko and Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga) are rivals; they are definitely not friends. Ochiba is the de facto head of the Taiko's clan. One thing that has bothered me is that Toranaga is portrayed very differently from Ieyasu. Objectively speaking, Toranaga should be the villain or antagonist. So, when Ochiba says that she has seen Toranaga making plans and conspiracies in the dark, that is actually more in line with the real Ieyasu. It might be that Toranaga is playing the audience hard in this one ;) And the real Ieyasu did not care for the heir.

Marikos a suicidal psychopath. Buntaro saved her life and she resent him for it. She gave him no feelings, no sex, no nothing. And the guys career got sabotaged coz he didnt let her sepukku, coz it makes him look like a kingslayer sympathizer. Then he suspects his wife is cheating on him w some white guy. Said white guy gets him drunk and taunts him infront of his wife. Imagine how the guy feels? Guys getting absolutely disrespected, by his lord, by his wife, and his community. And theres no history of him beating his wife. The one time it happened was coz he got shitfaced. He even apologizes for it to the man who slept with his wife

This was one of the worst episodes I don’t understand the praise for it. Was really boring and no real progress to the story was made until towards the end of the episode.
