Observation: those who put footwork and body (torso) movement into their cuts got more power in their swings than those who only used their arms. Skip to/back to 1:32, and pay close attention to what he does with his body (torso) and feet: he gets on his toes, then lets them pivot as he swings, turning his body to the direction of the swing while he does so. Compare his swing to the swings of those who kept their feet planted, didn't move their feet at all, didn't rotate their body, and/or used only used their arms to swing.

For those wondering why some of the katanas in this video are so broad, the reason is that katanas are fairly thick which gives them extra weight and therefore more cutting power, however the extra thickness causes more drag when cutting through a target, so these special katanas have the same amount of steel, but it's been put into a broader shape which makes the spine much thinner. By doing this the cutting power of a normal blade is retained but it now has much less resistance.

To anyone who reads this in the future. The fact that the last guy has a thinner/wider sword isn’t a factor into his ability to cut through the mats. It’s not a strength thing. It’s technique. You don’t cut those by ramming the sword through them. He has control over his sword and is able to keep the edge of the blade moving against the mats enabling him to slice through. Ie: he knows what he’s doing so stop fucking trying to think of bs excuses as to why he can do what he did.
@No-oneInParticular4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I was wondering about his wider sword. It's very impressive isn't it!
@modisp4 жыл бұрын
No, shape of sword impacts cutting drastically. But it does not negate fact that this amount of tatami mats require exceptional technique.
@WhyName4 жыл бұрын
That's some BS right there my guy. Yeah he is obviously skilled, but to claim the the sword "Isn't a factor" is extremely ignorant.
@dizzlelol74004 жыл бұрын
you're just wrong. if the sword's geometry behind the edge isn't thin enough it will wedge. try using an axe to cut a piece of paper from the edge. it doesn't work the same way you could do it with a kitchen knife. the blade had to be tall and thin to take that swing because if it were thick, it would get stuck easier and if it were short from the edge to the spine it could snap
@octigonipus4 жыл бұрын
Ok heres the thing, when cutting through things, the dimensions of the blade do factor in, his wider blade actually takes more control than the other katanas we saw here, usually when you force a blade through something exceptionally thick, it will glance off or lose momentum because as you cut the angle of the blade changes, and so you have to compinsate for the arch of your swing before you cut, also the fact that his blade is wider across but visably thinner in width is interesting, i dont personally know how thin blades compare to thicker ones when it comes to cutting through materials but i DID just remember that slo mo guys actually has a silly video that demonstrates my point pretty well, they cut through waterbottles, but its still neat to see dans learning curve
