We can have a look at some more anatomy of the head and neck if we look at the anatomy of swallowing. We need to consider the oral cavity, the tongue and the palate, and then the parts of the pharynx. There are 3 longitudinal muscles of the pharynx that elevate it and the larynx during swallowing, and 3 constrictor muscles of the pharynx that start pushing the bolus of food into the oesophagus. There are a couple of important cranial nerves to focus on.
Also, while we're there - the gag reflex!

As an elderly woman (78), something seems to get *stuck* every day. I also love medicine, had a former assistant training in Germany, was (!) married to a doctor and should have studied medicine myself instead of supporting a *selfish young doctor* through medical school. I recently had a violent food allergy caused by the touching shells of shrimps. My tongue swell up and touched the palette, had a white slimy surface with lots of blisters and swallowing became really difficult. A NP gave me a steroid treatment for a week, the Pandemic happened and I haven't seen a doctor yet. Watching this video really explains to me what is happening. It looks like my *restrictor muscles* are not working properly since I have trouble clearing my throat from Saliva or flim. I will be very proud to explain to my physician what I think is happening. These videos of Prof. Sam Webster must be a *God sent* for medical students.

Hello Sam! I have started studying medicine here in Germany a couple of weeks ago and I was so so overwhealmed with everything because there is so much to learn when starting of from 0. Even right now I am very scared of the upcoming first test about neck and thorax. However, I must admit that your videos have helped me a great deal understanding the more functional side of things and easing my mind aboutl I admire your excitement and interest in the topic and I didnt expect anybody to be able to make me chuckle when talking about the gag relfex. So yeah, thank you and keep up the amazing work!

Sam Webster - is a passionate teacher - love his videos and which are well worth looking especially after a long library cruise in learning anatomy. I think the paradigm of learning the basic medical sciences has changed with book reading ably supplemented by anatomy training videos. Dr Webster is a star in that - wishing him all success !!!...

Your video reminded me of many (many many!) years ago when I was a child and for some inexplicable reason I swallowed a twelve sided threepenny bit which became stuck for a while! I was unable to speak for a time and I cannot remember whether it came back up or went all the way down but I remember it being a bit uncomfortable at the time! I suppose kids use 50p pieces now (allowing for inflation!) to acheive the same effect! Happy new year sir. Blessings peace and thanks

Hey, how are you now? Hope better! I was recently diagnosed with vocal cord disorder as a result from Corona virus leaving me with my vocal cords closing when supposed to be open most of the time. I also have a horrible feeling of a lump in my throat throughout the day but hits hard at night as well as shortness of breath. I also have neuropathy..did u also have the lump in throat feeling?? Looking for ways to help since was told this is a vagus nerve injury by my ent.

@@Natesha07 Hello.. I'm really the same all the Dr's I have been to for 20+ years still don't know what my problems are. I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Sjogren's, Raynaud's all autoimmune and Nerve damage which could be caused by osteoarthritis and slipped disc in my neck and back. I guess maybe just nerve damage. The lump feeling is still there and worse. I had my Esophagus stretched about 3 weeks ago and repaired a hiatal hernia that was fixed 10 or so years ago. I guess I'm just a lost cause. My Dr. put me on oxytocin for all my pain and it helps a lot with my throat issues.. I'm sorry you got the virus and having to deal with all that. I hope that you can get your's figured out It is awful to have to live with the damage of vagus nerve and the vocal cord injury. I have breathing issues as well. I'm on a cpap machine because my oxgyen levels are low. Prayers for you, I wish you the best and hope the Doctors in your area are better than the one's I seem to get. I've been more focused on my back and hips lately I can't do much of anything without pain, I can't even walk 50 feet without needing to sit down, I am finally on Disability now, maybe new doctors can help me... Sorry for the long post.. I will keep you In my prayers.. God Bless

Hello Dr Sam. I have sustained a rupture of the plantaris tendon which retracted as well as a Gr 2 strain of the medial head of the gastroc muscle on my left leg 3 weeks ago. The muscle is healing well, though slowly. When I walk, I hear clicking sounds coming from around the knee and ankle. No pain. If the tendon is left untreated, would that cause serious issues in the future. Thanks

Currently struggling to drink liquids but solids seem fine its really frustrating what would cause something like this Iv struggled for about 7 years to swallow and I always needed something dense to push the food down and in 2019 I could swallow liquids but not solids for about a week now it's a few days of the opposite no liquids going down and it's way more frustrating
