Thanks for watching! Don't get me wrong, the Samyang 24mm 1.8 FE lens is a good lens for the price. However considering astrophotographers want that large aperture and most likely want to use it at 1.8, I find the results a little disappointing. Hopefully you find this video useful! I plan to revisit this lens in a future video and review it from the perspective of landscape photos shot above f/5.6. So subscribe for that! I'm not sure any f2+ lens that isn't apochromatic can withstand a 300% view. I own the 40mm 1.4 sigma which is considered one of the best loca corrected lenses in the world (it's also about 1.2kg) and on high contrast areas wide open it is still perceptible at a 100% view, far moreso at 300%. This is not knocking you, but I think your expectations for very bright optic (and a rather small one at that) might be a tad higher than reasonable. Have you checked whether the samyangs aberrations are reduced at f2.4-f2.8? A boon of big aperture lenses is not necessarily a flawless wide open performance (this is a rather newish trend of the past 5 years with very big complex and heavy lens designs) but an ability to produce better results stopped down slightly compared to a lens that starts at that lower aperture.
@JackWoodhams

The point was that this lens is advertised solely on its astro capability. Given most people shoot astro wide open, how can you say it's a good lens when every star is surrounded by purple fringing. Yes it's removable to a degree but it does change the way the sky is represented (especially when some natural colours in the night sky are red/purple) - speaking specifically of nebulas/miky way.
@acouragefann
@acouragefann Жыл бұрын
@@JackWoodhams I tend to shoot astro stopped down by 2/3-1 stop (on pretty much any lens - if I started with a 2.8 lens [Tamron 15-30mm fx] it'd probably perform best from F3.5-4 onwards) because it reduces coma smearing and CAs considerably on every fast prime, then stack 2-3 images to make up for the 2/3-1 stop of extra noise in post, as I find the noise cleanup easier than removing these aberrations, which, as you say, can also incorrectly represent the night sky. I'm merely saying that the Samyang follows the trend of just about any small, bright aperture prime and when it comes to coma, does better than most in my experience.

It's refreshing to hear someone that actually gets the point of a f1.4 lens. It's for better IQ at F2 -2.8 compared to an F2-2.8 lens. It's not shooting everything wide open unless absolutely necessary because of lighting issues and taking some IQ loss.

I appreciate this so much! As a wedding photographer, I end up in a lot of CA "torture test" situations, so when reviewers are like "Yeah it has a little CA in this really tough scenario, but otherwise it's okay", I don't know what to make of it. But this helped me a lot to understand that it could be a real issue for me.
@princeharbinger

Appreciate your honest take on this lens. I'm more concerned with coma performance. That fringing should in theory go away with a +5 slider adjustment. With that being said. What lens do you deem worthy for this particular application?

I am very happy with this lens, but the one problem i have is that the eye-autofocus seems to never hit on F 1.8. It either focusses on the eyebrows or nowhere near the eye at all. Going to F 2.0 fixes it, from here on theieye-autofocus works flawlessly. But of course i would like to use it on F 1.8 especially for portraits.

Samyang was always known about its questionable quality control. As an example I had 2 MF lenses earlier, the 12/2 and the 10/2.8 fisheye for Fuji from them. Both were severely decentered, fringed and unsharp at one side of the image. Then decided no more Samyang lenses. Now their optics are much better, but still, better to pretest the sample you are going to buy instead of hopping on the luck train of Samyang

I can empathise with you, Did you try contacting Samyang directly?, UK distribution might have got a batch which might all have the same problem. You could ask Samyang to send you a copy of the lens they send to the "reviewers" not based in UK so that you can review it based on that, and settle this matter with the ambassadors once for all :).

In his review Christopher Frost noticed purple fringeing too but it went away from f4 onwards. However I think his test chart is quite close so there is distance to consider. I've founf the sharper the lens the more chance of CA you get which I know can be a total pain. Maybe sharpening the 35mm f2.8 in post using a high pass filter is a better option lol.

Thanks, I have watched 100's of videos so far bc I am interested in this lens, I have to say you must have a bad copy because there are plenty of reviews in all conditions and never saw anything that bad. You surely got a bad copy. Did you replace it or any updates on this? Yes there is usually some CA wide open but even the Sony GM 1.4 and other "better" lenses have CA wide open. I do not shoot stars, but do shoot al lot of video and CA is not good in video or easy to "fix".

The problem with channels doing reviews is that if samyang sent them the lenses they will often send ones with better alignment and no problems. If you look at the photo examples I gave from users on flickr it's clear I'm not the only one with an issue like this. In fact, even one commenter on this video didn't believe me, bought the lens then it had the same problem! I also has two copies like this, so... two bad lenses? That makes the issue even worse because samyangs Qc must be all over the place.
