Hey. Yes I had the lockup and and manual focusing problem with mine, aswell as the af-c just wont lock on to anything, just pulse. I turned it in for warranty but the retailer sent it back claiming it to be working. And now my last option is to refund it unfortunately cause they won't help me with this...

Mine is focusing right but as I take the picture it sometimes randomly focuses to Infinity or at least a few meters behind the subject

Thanks for the detailed review on autofocus. I am experiencing the same autofocus noise issue with my Rokinon 85mm f1.4 on a7c. Luckily, I bought this lens recently so I am exchanging it with the same item. Hopefully, I'll not get this noise in that copy.

I had problems with the auto focus, it was hunting a lot without a reason and also the IBIS didn't work with my R6 until i upgraded the firmware to 3.0 and now the focus works like the native Canon lenses and the IBIS as well. Glad i did that firmware update, it made all the difference!

I’ve had 3 Samyang lenses. Two quickly became dysfunctional. I don’t think I’ll buy another. Thanks for this video ✌️

I just purchased a Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 for my Canon EOS RP, and it's the best lens I have ever used! Mine is tack sharp at F1.4 and focuses fast, even in low light. Thank you for this video. I was unaware of this issue.

If a bad lens goes out the door, it means it wasn't tested. There's only two possibilities here: 1) The lens was damaged in shipping. 2) Samyang does *not* actually perform full quality control and knowingly ships out Bad copies to reduce costs. I'm going with the latter.

I also go with possibility 2. I mean there are tons of review out there showing AF issues on this lens and im glad for this unbiased review

@@zyxyuv1650 do you have a working copy of the 85 AF that's doesn't behave that way? For me it's making tiny microadjustments in AF.C which throw the focus slightly off. It also makes a rattling sound and I can physically feel the lens constantly focusing. After reading a lot of forums this seems to be somewhat "normal" for this lens though I'm not sure.

after testing a lens in a shop, I think my copy is a bit broken. While they both make noise and microjitter, my copy has a significantly worse AF hit-rate.

Yes native lenses will always communicate better. That said I am wondering the lenses were auto-focus calibrated?

They are native lenses, I think you mean first party. These lenses were both designed for the Sony E mount, they aren’t adapted or modified to fit the mount, making them native.

my rokinon 85 1.4 bricked doing firmware. samyang said it would be 350 to fix it. so i spent 400 and got the viltrox 85.

Great video. Thanks for putting this out there and showing what it's like. I think i am most likely going to stay clear of most rokinon lenses for sony. I started to actually buy more lenses from local photo store and this helps me with being able to test + exchange a bad lens easily and get extended warranty which I did for a recent 35mm lens I got since I use it more often.

I have not any problems. With new firmware my 85 1.4 RF works good (IBIS is active). Only there is not data for auto lens correction in the camera but it is ease to correct later (for fix in next firmware update?). IQ and sharpness is good enogh with f1.4. If we take into account price, the IQ is exellent. I didn’t think too much, I bought and checked by yourself. You can always return to the store if you are not satisfied.

The lens is affordable for a F1.4, but the frequent focus locks, clicking noise, when turned off you feel something droppping is a major letdown. My lens was just a 2 weeks old along with the Samyang 18mm. But I never had any problem with my 70-200 GM / 28-75 Tamron and 55 Zeiss,

I bought the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 2 weeks ago, and had them shipped to me over on Bolivia. It arrived today, I've got the adapter to update the firmware. Plugged the whole thing, and the lens stopped working on it, then the camera wouldn't recognize it. It seems like it arrived dead or with some serious issues on the mount since it's not focusing, nor aperture is moving at all. Super disappointed at Samyang QA...

It would be better not to choose third-party lenses, rather better to give up 1.4 aperture and buy L 1.8 native lens, great performance in quality and functionality.

About focus speed, in Samyang station connected into lens You can set slow - normal - fast mode autofocus.

I should watch your video first and i have same noise issue while it is set on Continuous Focus, less on Single Focus Mode. It looks to has the same strange noise also during autofocus in video mode.

The af problem are obviously some bug in the firmware but the optic variation is actually very good. Gm or even some 4k zeiss lens have way more copy variation. I still think samyang is no the best in copy variation... you just get 2 good copy with minimal difference. If you want see real variation like going from a excellent lens to very bad look on the sony 35mm f1.4

THIS is the same problem I am having and why I am even visiting your video! link! I'm a portrait photographer. All I take are portraits where people are NOT MOVING. My Samyang lens was working perfectly, until I upgraded to the latest firmware for my Sony a7iii. I don't know if that's what caused it to stop working properly. But, omg. It the autofocusing CONSTANTLY fails now. It was my favorite lens, especially when I stopped down to 2.0! I have a Viltrox 85mm 1.8, also and prefer the image quality and colors of the Samyang 85. But, I'm not going to buy another one! I will just go back to m Viltrox I suppose.

Thank you for the video. I sent my new on back the other day. When trying focus, it would focus but not lock on, it would just keep chattering and would not stop until I took my finger off the half pushed shutter button. Tried everything and it would not stop chattering. Sent back. Thanks again for the video.

Have you done the review with the latest version 4 firmware. People have said that a lot of AF related issues have been resolved there.

Version 4 only addresses the a9. Says right on their website. -" Improved AF stability on A9". They are just garbage lenses.

I’m suffering the same issues with my Samyang 85mm E mount right now. I’ve only had it a day and the AF failure lock is evident. Maybe my copy is a lemon? But maybe it can be fixed with a firmware update? Really don’t want to go through the hassle of returning/exchanging, especially when people who have had fully working copies have raved on about the lens.

I notice that you yourself don't own this Samyang, but decided to keep your Sony 85mm f/1.8 instead. It would be interesting to hear why you decide to keep your Sony instead of the Samyang.

With that, would you still highly recommend the Samyang AF 85 f/1.4 over the Sony 85 1.8 as a no brainer given these known Q.C. issues? Also what's the best way to test whether you have the lemon version of the lens?

@@johannbeckham I would still recommend it, specially if you shoot stills primarily. The AF and IQ are exceptable on both IMO, but the disconnecting will not fly with me. The one I kept has never just stopped working to the point I have to remove it. Look out for that! And make sure you update the firmware!

I'm wondering - a lot of the big-name reviewers get lens samples sent from manufacturers - if things in the foto business work the same as in the PC hardware business? So you get these great reviews from hand-selected samples shipped out by manufacturers and only the store bound buyer gets the lenses with issues and no way to compare. Afaik, there is a fairly high return rate for lenses on Amazon and probably at other online retailers as well. I remember hearing about poorly centered lenses among other things...

I’ve been wondering about that too lately. And some reviewers do actually say something like “this lens was loaned to me from [company]”. There is no way those companies that send out lenses for review don’t send their best copy. It makes those reviews less useful to me. I wish the reviewers at least would say something like “my copy is probably one of the better ones, since the manufacturer sent it to me” and “it’s not impossible that your copy will be worse/less sharp” in their reviews.

Would you have to know what the difference is in image quality between this one, and the marked-as-the-same-but-with-different-fitting,-except-it's-a-totally-different-design lens for Nikon: the SAMYANG 85MM F1.4 AF NIKON F? Seriously, basically everywhere I've looked, they're just bunched together as different fittings for the same lens, only after having spent hours looking at reviews, did I find one review explicitely mentioning there's a difference at all. Now the cat's out of the bag, and I'm back to doubting whether I want it, as all the useful reviews I'd seen, are essentially about a different lens. So, would you happen to know how they compare?

The Sigma 85 1.4 DG DN and Canon RF 85 f/1.2 are plenty sharp in the corners wide open. Samyang just makes garbage lenses.

These Samyang/Rokinon 1.4 lenses are pure garbage. I went thru 3 copies of the 85 (two Samyang and one Rokinon) and two copies each of the 35 and 50 1.4 lenses. Every one of the were very hit and miss with WAY more miss. When shooting portraits, like every other shot would be out of focus or soft wide open. Eye AF or using a focus point over my models eye, didnt matter. They needed to be stopped down to 2.8 to be useable and yes, I was on the latest firmware. its a ripoff you need to pay $60 for a lens station too. These lenses also have an ugly yellow tint to them, its not a pleasing warm look either. Its yellow and makes people look sickly. Avoid these at all cost. The 1.8 tiny lenses are a bit better but they are built like toys.

One piece of information I feel was left out: were they on the same firmware versions? I bet AF performance is affected by that.

@@bernardinotejada8978 no, there are both EF and RF mounts separately. @Cristian, you can just take a picture of a wall at f1.4 and other aperture of you choice. With a tripod. Place your camera parallel to the wall. Iso 100, auto speed with timer for no motion blur. Check center and corners and you should see how sharp it is.

The title doesn't say what bodies these lenses are for. Nikon,Canon,Sony? Also Lens #1 is a what? Lens #2 is a what? Why can you say what they are. NEED MORE CONTENT BRO! A simple lens tag on the each image would have sufficed!

We shouldn't complain. There is a glass shortage and they were forced to cut the bottoms of beer bottles to make lenses.
