San Diego's fight for beachside yoga classes heads to Federal Court

The fight to make outdoor yoga classes available on San Diego public park spaces went to federal court Friday.
The City of San Diego has recently been cracking down on these donation-optional classes, pointing to a city-wide ordinance adopted in the 1990s.
Supporters of these popular classes, though, insist they have a constitutional right to yoga on the beach.

They are not total “free” - but “donations” -based. They typically “suggest” $10-20 per person (the price at a regular yoga studio, but obviously w/o the overhead, etc)and I’ve been to one where the host hounds everyone to pay up. Yet, they do not feel they have to report as income. 30+ attendees w/a majority paying up …just do the math.

Yes ! You are right . The instructor is being paid even it is say “ donation “ he has to get permit and pay whatever is required . My small group were asked to pay permit every month in Rohr park gazebo even on weekday ( Monday ) . We thought since it is a park and on weekdays , it is free . Park ranger noticed us and keep driving around and we were asked to register ! Maybe if we are outside gazebo ,it is free , but it is hot too !

Well, according to the Supreme Court, cities are allowed to enforce laws governing how public spaces are used. (See decision on homeless encampments). What's good for one group is good for another. I'm glad the courts see it this way.👍

The residents of PB have been complaining about Steve's obnoxious classes that take up every square inch of this rare and beautiful cliff area for over 10 years now. Steve has illegally collected tens of thousands of dollars in "donations" using a public space as his own private studio without paying a single cent in taxes. Whenever local residents attempt to access this area for relaxation his students make sure they feel uncomfortable or Steve sometimes even yells at them. And now Steve has arrogantly defied a court order to stop his classes by using a loophole to disobey the law and continue to abuse this public space for his own gains. Dont let his Namaste act fool you, he is the exact opposite of who he pretends to be.

This is ridiculous, cities like Long Beach do this without any issues If this was a religious group congregating we probably would not be having the same conversation. It's just a group of similar people communally sharing a public space and shouldnt that be a constitutional right?

I think we have a better space for it and perhaps Less attendees but I see your point. I just think they should try a new spot every weekend or daily and then no one gets irritated from it. You only see these people once a week at random
