San Francisco has a rich an diverse public transport system, comprised of subways, trams, trolleybuses, regular buses, and of course the famous Cable Car.
Today’s film takes a look at “Muni Metro”, which is San Francisco’s tram system. It has a length of 56 km on which it operates six lines. In the city centre, all lines are bundled along the Market Street corridor, where they run in a tunnel beneath the street. This (and only this) underground section uses ATO (automatic train operation), and in fact, it is the only light rail in the world to be so operated.
The film starts along The Embarcadero, which is the main waterfront street. Near the Bay Bridge one can get some wonderful shots of trams with the bridge in the background. We then move towards Embarcadero station, which is the first station inside the tunnel and where several lines terminate. After taking a brief look at another underground station, Van Ness station, the film finally shows more overground scenes at Church & Duboce and Cole & Carl stations.
Enjoy!
Filmed on December 17 and 18, 2016.
