The San'in Shinkansen Promotion Council has shown the new concept of the San'in Shinkansen.
On this route, it shares the route with the Hokuriku Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Higashi-Obama.
I will show you this route on the virtual tour.

Perhaps after the Hokuriku shinkansen extends to Osaka, people will support the idea of connections to Tohoku region Sea of Japan side without having to travel via Tokyo. With Uetsu Shinkansen

@@lewisho8114 yes but local authorities might be in favour of it since it works in a way that keeps people inside area's where they like to move to big cities from resulting in underpopulation in these areas. If Uetsu Shinkansen proves to be able to reverse the effect by connecting these bigger area's to sea of Japan side we might see Uetsu Shinkansen after shikoku shinkansen after 2050

Great video as always. I think at the beginning it would have been better to highlight the stations you were talking about, as many people don't know the details of Hokuriku Shinkansen and the previous Sanin route. As for the movement from one station to the other one, the previous "jumps" were better in my opinion as they were faster and gave a better idea of the position in Japan. Another tip: when talking about interchanges, it would be awesome if there were some little maps shown somewhere in order to see the network. For the rest, it is a very informative video as always!

This plan makes sense, not having to dig tunnels to reach the san'in coast will reduce the cost substantially and passing through Kyoto will surely increase demand for the route. Also, the section between Shin-osaka and Okayama would be extremely crowded with through running tokkaido shinkansen trains, sanyo shinkansen, shikoku shinkansen and san'in shinkansen trains. There are also quite a lot of mountains between Maizuru and Tottori which will heavily impact costs. That being said, this plan faces the same problem as the original plan, the lack of demand west of Izumo station. I reckon that if this line is built it will only be built to Izumo.
@lewisho8114
@lewisho8114 2 жыл бұрын
It won't pass Okayama. The demand of western section is still OK, because Hagi and Nagatoshi are popular tourist destinations.

Some critic: I think it would be easier to follow along if you'd mark the locations you want to mention if you show a map. The beginning was kind of hard to follow.

Hi Takeshi-san, great work on another virtual tour! Is it possible to request for the link of the announcement from the Promotion Council? My Japanese Google skills are not good enough, unfortunately. I want to visit Amanohashidate and Tottori sand dunes soon. I'm also surprised by the density of Matsue, it will be a challenge to acquire ROW. It would also be interesting for JR West to consider through-running services between Hakata and Joetsu-Miyoko/Toyama/Kanazawa to decongest the Sanyo shinkansen once the Hokuriku shinkansen is completed.

In Kyoto, why don't they dig the entire station as an underground cavern (widened tunnel to fit platforms) too? That way, they don't have to dig a huge pit for the station and the only potential thing they'll find is fossils.
@tl8211
@tl8211 2 жыл бұрын
Drilling large caverns like that without using a TBM can be very expensive. Cut and cover for stations is much cheaper, usually. Sometimes if you have a lot of experience and excellent terrain you can blast caverns cheaply using explosives, but I think JR Central and Kyoto Prefecture would shoot anyone that suggested that in the middle of Kyoto and so close to a central station. For metros you can be creative with large caliber TBMs, but they don't pay themselves in a Shinkansen line with much longer distances between the stations.
@00crashtest
@00crashtest 2 жыл бұрын
@@tl8211 Fortunately, cavern's don't have to be blasted using explosives. Even in poor soil conditions, they can still be dug/hammered with regular heavy equipment using a specialized method known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method, as shown by London's Elizabeth Line (project known as Crossrail), San Francisco's Chinatown Station, and Seattle's certain Sound Transit stations all of which lacked any bedrock and did not (and could not) use explosives. Since Kyoto is located in an alluvial plain, it probably has similar soil conditions as those listed above, and so could not use explosives and could use the same method as those stations.
@tl8211
@tl8211 2 жыл бұрын
@@00crashtest Correct, but NATM is exactly what is extremely expensive. All these lines cost huge amounts of money compared to even very expensive cut and cover stations.
