I have been in the fire service for 24 years, I have never heard a fire, especially that size and scope, handled as well as you did. From IC to everyone down... Congratulations you guys rocked it!!

Impressive to listen how calm the Chief handles so many fire fighters. Bravo to the incredible communication and prep to handle such a huge fire.

I was at the Kohls next door when the fire started and it was crazy how fast they were able to get folks pushed back and how minimal the human cost was. That fire was raging in a few minutes. They did an awesome job

Incredible command and control! You must know your resources and their capabilities to make assignments this quick and efficient! I will have to say this dispatch did an incredible job, too!!!

One more observation (as someone who has ZERO knowledge of firefighting): I am so overwhelmingly impressed with the role of the IC in this situation. He is seriously performing the role of an Air Traffic Controller - with far more urgency and rapidly changing conditions. What an insanely stressful job that must be!

Grateful for the quick and effective response from our First Responders. HD was located in a densely populated area. I live in that neighborhood, and got to experience it first-hand. The fire grew rapidly - SCARY FAST. The smoke and flying (still-burning) embers were unbelievable. And high gusty winds (headed toward our house!) made it even worse. Huge thanks to SJFD for getting things under control quickly! I shudder to think how much worse it could have been.

Many of these fire audios I cannot understand. These guys are incredible in how they are able to effectively communicate under pressure. Great job!

I just want to say that you guys did an awesome job with communication!!! The IC that took over was phenomenal!! I'm sure this was one of those "pucker" times, but he was strong and confident and didn't hesitate to change strategy quickly for safety. It is awesome to see how the command went seamlessly!! Fire Chief David Decker in Ohio has an awesome channel on incident command and this video of the audio should be used for training for all fire officers!! Outstanding run through on PAR with change in strategy and managing so many resources!! You guys did awesome!!!

Awesome job if Fire Fighter safety , multiple incoming units allocation and coordination I think San Jose Fire Department should be proud of all their personnel their professionalism and training proves stellar .

That is my neighborhood. My elementary and middle school are just out of photo by about ten feet and my highschool just above top center. Terrible fire, great response. As you look at the bldg the left side is an animal kennel, groomer, etc. And they got the dogs out.

Not much else I can say on the superb job handling this - If possible this should be a a topic of a seminar at FDIC. If not later this month next year. This is a great teaching opportunity for fire officers and dispatchers.

Unbelievable command and control from this IC and coordination with his dispatcher! We always assume that with smoke baffles, alarms, overhead and rack sprinklers a Home Depot will never get to this but clearly those systems can be OOS or overwhelmed. Well done San Jose! 💪🏼

Me and my family were in Santa cruz and we could see the fire all the way on the bay area and me and my mom and dad went to go see and it was huge it was right next to the mall we were parked at It's nice to see our fire department save so many people everyday my heart goes out for the first responders

Yes, very professional command structure on a major incident. However after list to both audios I don't think anyone mentioned the sprinkler system? Was it operational? Was it boosted at the exterior riser with an engine? ??? I would also like to know why the third alarm only got 2 engines and a support truck. With auto/.mutual aid being extremely common these days I would offer a suggestion you could banter about maybe at the end of a drill: if calling for additional alarms that means the fire is moving faster then you. Consider this; Request a specific amount of resources that exceed what you need now as response times increase due to distance and equally so, the fire itself keeps pulling ahead of you. Try this for a table drill/debate. Dispatch Command 3 , I want 6 additional engines and 3 trucks or 7 engines and 2 trucks. Knowing you have a specific number of resources that should exceed what you currently need is an insurance policy that may prove extremely valuable, you can always key the mic and turn them around. Calling additional alarms is always chasing the issue. Push that button once and get everybody heading in that direction. What say you?

Well conducted command and control San Jose Fire. Did The Home Depot have fire department connections? All Home Depot stores in NJ have sprinklers.

I hope to follow the investigation on this fire. The sprinklers were not effective if they actually activated. On one video you can hear the employees trying to get everyone out as the fire rages. I don't hear an alarm or annunciators. The purpose of smoke and flame detectors are to alert the humans in the store. Witnesses say the alarm activated after they got everyone out. I wonder about the systems, procedures and training that Home Depot has in place.

I work for the company and all of our stores should have sprinklers also the reason y the fire spread very fast is because the fire started in the lumber department

I hope that someone can answer my question honestly. Does anyone know the time it took from dispatch to the first company arriving on the scene? Someone tried to say that it took 15 minutes, but I told him that I was sure that he was wrong. Thanks for anyones help in advance.
