I think Ferraro is a great player that when put in the wrong position or forced to do something he is deficient at results are less than stellar. This can be said for practically all players in the NHL. Keep him at home while his partner is the offensive minded dman and he’ll be just fine. Kind of reminds me of when the sharks had Demelo all those years and was mostly a 7th dman, as soon as he was traded away he became a very good defensive player that we desperately need.

Hey Professor, We have talked at length this season about the Sharks defense so I won't go into the deficiencies of the forwards as a group to consistently back check and be in the right place to support the defensive corps. I will say that the way the Sharks played defense as a team last year is a step above the wild and woolly 80's when nobody was playing defense much in the whole league and 50 goal seasons were a dime a dozen. HoF gaolies like Grant Furh had a career goals against of like 3.35 or some such which is crazy to consider but, when you toss a goalie to the dogs and they have to be the entirety of your teams defense well....that's what you get. I bring this up because the Sharks played defense basically one step removed from that era of high octane offense. The Sharks defense was expected to be the defensive corps and the goalie. About 20% of the forwards consistently made solid defensive contributions. Another 30% were inconsistent in their defensive efforts and were often just not in the right place at the right time. The rest of the forwards were MIA when we were defending. When your D corps is not solid to begin with that is an absolute recipe for disaster and we certainly witnessed it. As far as trading Ferraro I think your right he is available for the right price but, doesn't it seem crazy to trade away our best defensive defensemen in a time when we are trying to stiffen our defensive cops? We need to add more solid defensive NHL defensemen not subtract from arguably the worst defensive corps in the league. My issue with Ferraro: he’s a super hard worker who will block a shot and win the battle for the puck along the boards…then he’ll turn it right over with a bad breakout pass and get trapped in his own zone. If he had a partner that could move the puck, he’s probably much more effective. Just very little poise with the puck and causes too much chaos, IMO.
