There is a bit of a melancholy message that these people could only express their true personas after death.

Tbh didn't Kelly express her true persona in real life? Just because she found a partner doesn't mean she never lived her true self? Just like if her partner was a girl instead she would still live her true persona even if she never got the chance to be with a man. Fits Yorkie more since she couldn't live her life, was lesbian and had parents that hated her sexuality. Maybe im wrong but I just see it that if you are bisexual doesn't mean you have to be with both genders before death, some times you just meet the right one early in life.

@@MrFasho123 I think they're more referring to Yorkie since in the video, Bryce describes her putting down the glasses as "finally being comfortable with herself"

it's kinda sad in an optimistic way though. Yorkie never gets to live a real life until after she died and is in a simulated reality.

Honestly I don't think that's a fair or accurate summation of the episode. Yorkie was, due to the time period where she had her crash, limited in the way she could express her true self, but Kelly seems to have lived a full and happy life and was - at least before she met Yorkie - only going to San Junipero to have an escape from the life her aging body had trapped her in. As someone with chronic pain issues, trust me, if I could go to a virtual place for a few hours every day where I could still run around and climb trees and not worry about being in pain, I would do it too. Their ending is happy and hopeful. No one is STUCK in San Junipero, all the permanent residents have the ability to "move on" when they've reached that point, and in the meantime being able to relive the days when you were young and able-bodied and maybe make yourself into the person you wish you could've been in life is really empowering to me. Kelly and Yorkie will be happy, until they're done (and they both - even Yorkie - WILL be done at some point, people weren't meant to live forever and psychologically I think they'll hit an end point at some time), and in the meantime they get to be young and beautiful and carefree in a way they couldn't always be in life, and I think that's beautiful and comforting.

@@maggienewson8859 With technology that high, I think they have a reset button for memories. Different body builds. I think the black woman would want to be with her husband and kid and may request that simulation. Though I doubt her husband would ever forgive her for doing the things she had done, so she may have to fix somethings with her fake husband like make him a bit more nice or open (which in theory is not her husband when it comes down to it).

Kelly was pretty deep to. She claims she would not forgive her husband, but in reality or "reality" as I should quote, that she knows her husband wherever he is would never forgive her for that antic. Kelly believed in the after life and was afraid of facing them.
@DonnaBrooks
@DonnaBrooks 4 жыл бұрын
@@aseeds7785 What antic?? Falling in love again, or the casual sex she was having BEFORE she met Yorkie? Kelly wasn't afraid of facing them because she doesn't believe in an afterlife! She believes they are nowhere. Gone. Obliterated. Ceased to be. Annihilated. No longer conscious. THIS IS AN EX-FAMILY! Watch the show & quit putting your thoughts into the characters' heads! She CLEARLY said she wished she believed that her daughter & husband were together but SHE DOESN'T!! Her husband has nothing to forgive (not that he COULD forgive anything since he's DEAD). She didn't cheat on him, even when she was hooking up w/ people in SJ. She has no obligation to never have feelings for someone else after his death. It's right in the wedding vows: "Until death do us part." Do you think every widower & widow should abstain from companionship for the rest of their lives? What if she had lost them when she was in her 20s? Should she never remarry or have more children because she MIGHT be reunited w/ her original family in some afterlife that just as likely doesn't exist? Or are you one of these misogynists who believe that a surviving wife should throw herself onto her dead husband's funeral pyre & die, too!

it's pretty pissing off that people are saying that the reason this episode is loved is that of lesbians and that the writers gave it an optimistic ending for the same reasons. But it isn't. Its one of the most beautiful episodes in the series, with lively cinematics and a gut-wrenching story, which makes you question reality itself. The ending might have turned out optimistic for Yorkie and Kelly, but it really puts forward the question of humanity and death. The episode deals with the long old battle of heaven, and if it exists or not. People don't seem to understand, this episode would've been just as amazing if it didn't have the LGBT aspect to it. Making the story centered around lesbians just adds to the accepting nature of the show and only fuels the story with more power. It's nice seeing Yorkie finally happy free and Kelly finally moving on, whilst questioning their reality. It really merges two very different questions and gets our gears turning, gets us thinking about the afterlife, gets us thinking about how heaven could actually be.... a place on Earth.

It definitely is there to show us that after a certain amount of time (which can be very long in a VR you cannot die in) all of the thrills become less exciting, since at the end of the day everyone knows it is a VR world, where you can even adjust your own pain levels and such. So all the old dwellers of SJ end up in the Quagmire, trying to find some thrill in the numb VR world they reside in...
@maggienewson8859
@maggienewson8859 5 жыл бұрын
I think it wasn't meant to suggest anything other than the fact that sometimes, people want a visceral escape. Sometimes people are hurting and lonely and miserable and they want something gritty and sexual and grounding to express that. the Quagmire wasn't a bad place, it was just a place that someone like Yorkie wasn't going to find any comfort or belonging in, because that's a) not the person she was, and b) a sort of experience she never got to HAVE. Of COURSE she's going to be uncomfortable with the unabashed sexuality of a place like that, but older people who DID get to live their full lives getting to be young again? Some of them are just gonna want to bang and that's a fact. For once, I think reading too deeply into any of the clubs is just going to ruin or muddy the message of the episode, which (to me, as an adult disabled lesbian) was more about "it's never too late to find yourself, it's never too late to start over, maybe one day even death can be a starting point for being true to yourself".

You missed discussing some of my favorite foreshadowing in this episode, which is one I love to rewatch: Yorkie's glasses not being needed for vision correction (since she's virtual). All the foreshadowing that it's VR (the young guy with the worn-out knee cap replacements dancing, "five months to live" being taken in stride, the cavalier attitude about reckless driving, and the brilliant double meanings such as people being dressed inauthentically because they got it out of a movie, or two women dancing not being a big deal anymore -- that is, not like it was in the real 1987). The two reveals (the mirror that unsmashes itself and does not cause bleeding, which reveals it's VR, and the line that follows "you might try a different time" being years instead of hours. I also think it's worth mentioning the characters who forget the point of the whole thing: the guy who, restored to youth for a few precious hours, spends it complaining about his medical woes and recent surgery, and the guy whose idea of a good time in an immersive VR is to play virtual video games. Finally, I'd have liked to hear your opinion on whether the montage of Yorkie trying on different clothes is really the montage we think it is, or whether plugging in a new cassette instantly dresses her in a predefined outfit that matches the music. You made some good points and pointed out a detail or two I'd missed, but I'd have liked more analysis and less paraphrasing of the dialog we all heard.

The relationship between the girls is one thing, but I mainly love the production and setting of this episode. It stirs up emotions and memories. The idea of a mercurial figure who everyone seems to desire, the jumping between time periods in a location that obviously evokes memories of great times in the user's past. The music's brilliant (bar Kylie in the 90s lol), the sun seemingly is setting over the ocean for the whole weekend, and even the clubs aren't too packed. Even though I wasn't even born in the 80's, it brings me a sad feeling that youth isn't forever.

This episode really hit me hard. My fiancée had a cardiac arrest and is in a similar vegetative state like Yorki - she can't see or move but can hear. And her "highly religious" parents refuse to consider euthanasia because of their beliefs, also. She doesn't have a San Junipero to live in while she's a prisoner in her own body, though, so it was definitely a bittersweet and thought-provoking episode all at once.

I've always thought that when Kelly crashed her car and saw Yorkie's face first after she got up made her change her mind about now passing over. She learned that maybe there's nothing after she dies so she might as well try San Junipero and be with Yorkie. After all, they can call the simulation off if they didn't feel like it anymore, as Yorkie mentioned.

The only confusion you have about "your" self is that you don't have a self, you made it all up or else you would be accepting that you are 2 persons in 1 body.. we all know where that ends.. the other is to establish a honor code of right and wrong, follow that and and you always know what the right thing is to do, to your best of knowledge, hens your power will grow from righteousness and the "your" self/ personality there is just that, and its pretty epic. or you can follow the rest of the pile that just does whats best for "your" self, so then at least your doing the bidding for your self.. but then who is that other self your talking about? most people think they are them self's... its crazy when you think about it

San Junipero doesn't have a bright happy ending. The secret lies in the Quagmire. If the world of "San Junipero" is a road, then the narrative between Kelly and Yorkie begins at the very start of the road. We see the intensity of emotion that goes along with new experiences. However, at the end of the road lies the Quagmire. The state of emotional destitution that comes with an eternal unchanging life. The entire episode is a distraction from the reality of their situation. They're blissfully ignorant of the gravity of their decision for immortality because they can't see past the passion of the current moment. Similarly, the show doesn't focus nor dwell on the Quagmire because it's focusing on the emotional story between these two characters.

I have a similar thoguth, i mean, If the people put their minds after death forever in San Junipero, how it's possible that some of them stop feeling, or stop feeling "normal" things that they have to go to the Qaggmire (giggitty) to feel something as Kelly said. I mean, is this a kind of evolution of the mind in the tucker system? What's the point of being eternally in heaven on earth if you can't feel. Anyway, all this kinda stuff goes further than the episode, and thats a truly good thing about Black Mirror, they give you the possibilties to free your mind and thoughts beyond what you see in the show, as equal sometimes happens in the episodes.

OK, I hate to be dark, but because I was initially surprised that the ending seemed so happy I went back and watched more carefully. This is just a theory but it seems to fit with all the facts in the story AND renders a very dark ending. Kelly goes to great effort to tell Yorki that she has no intention of being put into San Junipero when she actually dies and explains this with such conviction that her view of living indefinitely in San Junipero before OR after her physical real death is contemptible to her...that she is just having some fun before she dies. Consequently, she elects to actually marry Yorki prior to Yorki's death to make Yorki feel better. However, there is an important scene where Kelly is being physically buried at a cemetery which precedes the scene in San Junipero with her arriving to see Yorki. My take is that Kelly never opted to go to San Junipero but rather the simulation of San Junipero used what was already known by the software to make Kelly appear FOR the sake of Yorki's post-death version in San Junipero. What I am trying to say is that the software is pleasing a software version of a dead person named Yorki by deceiving her with the fiction that Kelly was so overjoyed with Yorki that she changed her mind about coming to San Junipero, when in fact she did not-she dies and makes sure they do not upload her. The version then is so dark because both die, one is happy that her semblance will be uploaded making her falsely hope or think this will be a form of immortality (it is not). It is the more dark because the apparition of Yorki is deceived. Sort of sorry to even say all this but someone either has to tell me how this is inconsistent or if I am insane.
@stephengrigg5988
@stephengrigg5988 5 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Kelly's line of "I'm ready for the rest of it" after a few days of contemplation without Yorkie appeared to say that she wanted to give it a try with a new love. remember, Kelly was an atheist, so I don't think that 'rest of it' line would imply heaven because it's not something she believed in.
@russ8001
@russ8001 5 жыл бұрын
Stephen Grigg well i kinda hope you are right. i took the line to mean she is ready to die (she was shown having increasing breathing problems) and she said she detested the fantasy and emptiness of San Junipero beyond just having fun prior to her death. but even if you are right, the damned thing is still dark (maybe darker) because they both are actually dead and so the renditions of each are purely virtual.
@stephengrigg5988
@stephengrigg5988 5 жыл бұрын
true. I don't think it's meant to be a total Disney happily ever after ending. they are "living" in some degree of denial and it will most likely end bad eventually. the fact that it shows two core things being plugged into the system side by side really does imply, imo, that Kelly went to San Junipero tho.
@annaf3915
@annaf3915 5 жыл бұрын
I thought about this for longer than I wanted to :-) I did find that happy ending strange for Black Mirror. We learned that everytime a relationship in San Junipero becomes more than "fun", Kelly avoids the other person, and she did the same with Yorkie. In their final argument she explains she married Yorkie just to make her feel better. How did she go from this to happily "everafter" and facing the Qagmire? But then, why would she choose the euthanizing drug instead of just waiting for the end? And we did see the 2 buttons next to each other, lighting up (kind of cheesy and sad at the same time, as that's all that's left of the person). So maybe the burial scene was just shown to make us feel uncomfortable? But now another comment pointed out that the fluid in Kelly's euthanizing scene was a different colour (white) from Yorkie's AND the cookie saving device shown on Yorkie's forehead wasn't there on Kelly's. SO: I think your theory is 100% correct! Kelly wanted to do something nice for Yorkie who never had a chance to live her life and left her a fake virtual version of herself.
@russ8001
@russ8001 5 жыл бұрын
@@annaf3915 Thanks for bringing all that information (principally the lack of cookie-saving device on Kelly's head but also fluid color)... I am trying to find some comfort in this all (aside from the comfort of familiarity that the end of things is generally bad) by a sort of mathematical induction...I mean maybe if the downloaded information about oneself was sufficiently large, the "postcard" of oneself would have sufficient fidelity that future visitors could understand what you were really like?

I felt the ending was jarring. The happy rock music blaring when you see Kelly getting the euthanasia juice through tubes really made me question if I saw what I just saw. I wonder how long Yorkie and Kelly's relationship will last, and when they both will decide to end their consciousnesses since they have the choice to do that too. Do people really want to live in an afterlife where its just an almost mirror replica of the real world and where they only satisfy carnal human desires? It's a good thing that they have the option to end their lives anytime they want imo

Black Mirror sometime feels like how a medieval person, who's only seen hand drawn art, would react to a photo.. Or someone who's only seen black & white, looking at colored "realistic" pictures. Or someone who's only seen unmoving pictures, look at a movie. Or someone who's only seen a flat movie look at their first 3'D. Or someone who's _seen_ 3'd content, react to a VR headset. It's just bonkers, impossible, unreal.I wonder how far it will go? IDK about reproducing someone. That's basically recreating life. Then again, maybe I'm in a cave, trying to perceive the world through shadows.

Look not through the intellect; it can never uncover the answer, but endlessly produce new dilemmas and theories. Look instead upon the intellect. Watch the mind. In each thought, idea, belief, image, sensation, feeling, perception, simply observe the mind. The mind then fades, and the Truth is revealed. In the eastern religions such a practice has been called mindfulness or meditation. In the western religions such a practice has been called faith, that even as the mind conjures up endless problems and endless roads, one is centred, one is recollected, one remains watchful as that which would drive us away from selfless love is perceived and dissipated, and the Truth which is the Love that has created us is revealed. The Buddha: "This is the only way, O bhikkhus, for the purification of beings, for the overcoming of sorrow and lamentation, for the destruction of suffering and grief, for reaching the right path, for the attainment of Nibbana, namely, the Four Arousings of Mindfulness." Jesus: "Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is ready, but the body is weak." Keep watch over the mind; there is the source of all suffering, and be compassionate and serve all beings as your children, as your neighbour. May this be of use 🤗

Not because of the sexual things, but the concept of people of various ages (in this case elderly people) meeting in a virtual world where they become young again. What makes the "real world" any different than the simulations? Technology is so magical.

This was a really insightful video. I think I agree with everything you said. I just watched a different explanation of the ep, and I disagreed with many claims it made. I think your final line, "One learned to love herself & one learned to love again," was a nearly perfect summary. I would only add that Yorkie's arc was a bit more comprehensive than just learning to love herself. Her greater arc is that she needed to overcome FEAR- fear of what other people think of her, fear of rejection, fear of how to pursue a relationship, of being sexually intimate for the first time, of breaking glass & car accidents, of Kelly seeing her in the physical world, of driving, of dancing with Kelly in front of others. The last 2 shots we see of her,- driving (a RED car no less, like the video game at the beginning),- and even running slightly off the road while kissing Kelly, and dancing like they were the only people in the world, showed how free she was. That was a wonderful transformation.

2:40 Walk Like An Egyptian music Black Mirror Fan: I listen it from a love story about two gay couple in a simulation. Jojo Fan: I listen it as an end credit of a story of a 17 year old British Japanese boy with puncing ghost vs a 120 years old bisexual vampire with punching ghost.

Not sure if this is an Easter egg or not... but the sign in the bar says "Tuckers" and the name of the business in Bandersnatch was called "Tuckersoft". Just realized that while watching this video

Easily the best Black Mirror episode. I have to admit, Yorkie's sexual orientation and religious family background was troupie, as it wasn't required for the future relationship of Yorkie and Kelly.

The story isn't just about Yorkie and Kelly's relationship. It's also about Yorkie becoming comfortable with herself after only being around her homophobic family for forty years.
@conchobar

@@lameduck1690 Except she wasn't around her homophobic family, but spent 40 years with health workers, in a 24hr care facility, while in a catatonic state. That's why I said it was troupie.

@@conchobar It's heavily implied that her family spent time with her while she was in the catatonic state. Even if she wasn't, that was one of the only stimuli she was able to experience before she became catatonic. It's really, really important to her character development. Also, "troupie" isn't a word.

I already thought of every aspect of the afterlife except the feeling of having a never ending life....like its eternal.U will live forever.The life on earth stopped and now you are gone and you cant go back, cant feel having an ending life. Its amazing how this episode managed to put all of those aspects in an episode
