San Martin have launched a new microbrand, watches that will not be available on AliExpress, only from their dedicated website.
Here is a link to the watch featured in this video. This is not an affiliate link.

WHY I OFTEN DON'T MENTION OTHER BRANDS IN MY VIDEOS.
You may have noticed that I often don't mention the original brands that watches I am reviewing pay homage to. This is very intentional and not meant to offend you or the original brands. I lost my first channel in October 2020 which I had spent 9 months growing and invested a significant amount of money in simply because I had mentioned the original brands in some of my videos. There are people who try to use KZfaqs lack of understanding when it comes to the difference between homage watches and fake watches to attack other channels and their owners and sadly I fell foul of this in 2020. This channel was also attacked recently and KZfaq deleted content simply because I had said 'subby homage' and 'Rolex homage' in two videos despite the watches in the videos being perfectly legal homage watches. Please understand that I can not afford to risk my channel so I will no longer be mentioning other brands when reviewing homage watches.

Sounds like an interesting project. I think we often overlook how large the domestic Chinese market is. It may be the branding will attract many Chinese buyers and the styles may not appeal to us in the west, but be very popular there. A new brand to try something new could be the best of both worlds with the current San Martins continuing and more choice of something different.

Something you probably overlooked is that the Chinese name will no doubt be welcomed by Chinese purchasers. I do wonder what percentage of sales are made to the West vs China/Hong Kong etc.

G think your reservations on both the branding and the design are bang on. I have six SMs all of which impressed me in a variety of ways. But I would not go near that probably 70% due to the design and 30% due to the branding. If their domestic volumes are big enough I suspect we will see a large number of releases in a short period of time with - from a non-domestic perspective - mostly misses and perhaps the occasional nugget. If all they are doing is looking to utilize capacity then it will probably achieve that. But if they are looking to create something with international recognition and renown then v doubtful. G

I kind of understand why they wanted to go with a Chinese name. As if they're going to make it as a proper microbrand they need to be honest about where they're from... But, if possible they need a name that is easier to pronounce in English as well though. As for the design of this particular one... It just doesn't work for me at all. I completely agree with what you said about the strengths of San Martins more original designs Gary.

San Martin do really well on Ali express, can't imagine them coming off it! And yes they're becoming more mainstream than just a Chinese homage brand. Strange though that they'd choose a more Chinese name for this sub brand than a western name, that will definitely hold them back to non Asian audiences.

From the get-go, my only wish/want from San Martin would be that they started to producing watches of their own design. They are more than capable of produce excellent watches without "piggy-backing" on famous watches. Many of these famous watches have (atleast in my mind) design-flaws, aspect which could be easily improved upon, without costing a fortune; just simple tweaks. SM is in the perfect position of doing that.

This whole Chinese watch thing is fascinating. Very few people remember the upstart Swiss watch industry used to make cheap watches with English/American sounding names, leveraging their cheaper labor to usurp dominance of the then best brands in the world. Even today how many of the Swiss brands have truly Swiss names? I can understand their nationalistic desire to have a Chinese named brand, that might sell there great but as the old saying goes "will it play in Peoria?" (Not if they look like this one, lol)

It took San Martin several years to find that balance between copy and originality in their main line of watches. It will take them a while (hopefully not quite as long) to find that balance with the new brand, too. Someone at San Martin seems to really enjoy making more "artistic" watches, and so maybe this will be an outlet for models that are a bit too far outside of the norm to have the San Martin logo on the dial.
@GalorOffroad
@GalorOffroad Ай бұрын
I think they're right to do that, it's great. A Chinese brand name is not a bad thing nowadays. People realize China is strong and can be very good in many many things. They have to be proud of what they do and assume the Chinese brands names. I have no problem with that 🙂 This one is easy to prononce. Plus the design of this watch is fully original, very nice to my eyes. Too big for me but good looking 👍

They're worth every penny - the kids disappeared for ages building dens in the space underneath. It makes sense that what they're actually launching is a home market brand for the Pacific Rim. The resistance from the west vs literally billions of people with different cultural tatses is a no brainer. It's much like Casio and their JDM models, they're perfectly satisfied with the grey market serving the west while giving the home market the type of products unique to their expectations. The SM name is all they need to sell to the west, the new brand isn't for us IMHO.

Oh San Martin.....I do wonder about their decision makers. The issue people have with AliExpress brands and watches is that they are a supermajority homages...and not even homages they are "clomages". Which is to say the design is so close to the original you have to play where's Waldo to spot the differences that keep the brand from being sued or accused of creating fakes or replicas. So I understand why many people are uncomfortable with these watches to be honest. But it's obvious some of these watches are well made and are building a reputation for the build quality and value they present. And I think San Martin has really in some ways been the flag bearer of making some people reconsider what AliExpress brands can offer. I have been one who has been advocating for more original designs from San Martin for some time because obviously they know how to build a watch and I would love to see them move beyond "clomages" which would help their legitimacy. But honestly I've been critical of their original designs simply because I rarely find them appealing. The idea of them creating a true micro sub brand for original designs at first glance sounds brilliant BUT yeah I'm not sure they are going about it in the best way. This doesn't sound as promising as I had hoped. Yes that branding.... likely to be an issue. And although I understand them wanting to honor their Chinese heritage, it's ironic they didn't consider that an issue when they built their reputation under the "San Martin" brand. Obviously they thought a more Western name would be wise at some point in time. I do think maybe using initials or just a good brand design logo could help. Secondly much like their other "original" designs, first impressions of this watches design, kinda not good. I'm sure it's well built because that's what San Martin does right. But yeah design doesn't be their forte. Their best original designs are their most simplistic ones...which although not exciting are at least not offensive. But whenever they seem to truly try to be original....I feel like they often over do it. And create something that simply isn't attractive. Hopefully this first attempt is something they can learn from and not necessarily a sign of things to come. But not a great initial impression to be honest.

Jianghun to my eastern-european ear sounds too much like Guanqin. There's no problem in Mandarin/Cantonese naming. Naming is a problem itself everywhere. Even some neutral western brands struggle with identity within Europe. Neutral 'Xiaomi' spent some effort with pronunciation outside China. My suggestion would be to choose some easy-to-pronounce city or region of China. This would create an additional connection with the San-Martin brand, which takes a name from the location.

Well... It's certainly unique? I think creating a coherent design ethos and standing out from the pack are the main necessities for a microbrand so you don't just produce the usual lowest common denominator slop that a lot of micros put out. I don't see a coherent design ethos evolving out of this first attempt, it's a dog's dinner of parts. But hey, maybe they'll improve? Maybe? The branding is fine, I have no problem with Chinese brands as long as they're actually making quality, original work that they're proud of. It might be French-Chinese but Atelier Wen is a good example. It's just a perception issue, people used to think Japanese brands were trash and now look at the cachet Japanese goods have, if the Chinese want the same thing to happen to their brand credibility the first step is to start making good stuff with Chinese names on it.

i kinda like it, not bad for a first try, its ugly but good ugly and the other colors are much better. some micros had a horrible first try and look! they use the proper movement.. finally..

Well... the bashing of the microbrand comes from the guy that wanted to make his own microbrand trying to sell the most generic, overpriced watch in zilon colors and failed miserably. I hated SM for making design stolen watches. But they came so far now and got my respect. And this one is a great step forward. Finaly the name.... I was waiting for Chinese brand to carry the origin of the watch with pride. Finaly a Chinese brand that does that. Bravo SM and good luck in the future.

I understand why they want to use a Chinese name. They should embrace their culture and rich history. The 2024 Chinese New Year watches were a great success for example. However, they must be careful with the designs. If I were them, I would search very hard for a great designer or artist with notoriety, not necessarily in the domain of watches, to create a small range of themed models.

I believe they should use the brand where they have most sales : ok for Chinese naming if China is their main market. But not for me then. Some brands are just so odd to my ears. Remember some cars didn't sell abroad in the past, just due to their name. Who wants a product that sounds like sh*te or p**p or whatever in their own language ? Or which has more than 3 or 4 consonants in a row ?

Jianjhun eventually doe not sound worse than Junghans :-) Maybe we, western buyers, feel more secure with a German sounding brand, I don't know. Take Jaeger Lecoultre, who can pronounce that properly ?
