THE LAST DAYS OF SUMMER LAMBING 2019
Finally into our last week of this lambing group. What started out with a few hiccups, has smoothed out and become one of my more enjoyable lambing groups.
In this video, I tube fed a newborn lamb not doing well, I successfully fostered a triplet onto a ewe who lost her lamb, and my sweet friend GOAT (the sheep) finally gave birth!!!
Stay tuned until the end where I share the final results of this group!
Not my worst, but still lots of room to improve.
Let me know if any of you breed for June lambs!
Comment below!!⬇️⬇️
As always, thanks so much for watching!!

I look forward to your videos. Thanks for taking the time to include us on your daily routine in the sheep business. My wife and I have 4500 White Dorper ewes and 6500 Boer Goats so we have to graft many babies on moms that are not theirs. We have stanchions where The mom can lay down stand up , drink and eat but cannot turn around and push the baby away. They’re similar to a lambing jug but have a head gate. We leave them in there for about five days and when we let the ewe go there’s a 95% chance that she’ll take the Lamb as her own.really cuts down on bottle babies and mastitis.

@mikecanaday5731
@mikecanaday5731 5 жыл бұрын
Sandi Brock It’s likely that you’ll be able to use the panels you already have and just either build or buy the headgate panel. We turn them loose on the fifth day and keep them in the pen so that we can see they motherd up. If not we will put her back in the head gate and give them a couple more days. Best part is each baby has their own mom and the ewes have a baby to love on. Works great on goats too and they are not the best mothers compared to the ewes. Again thanks for all you do Mike

Shame about the 2 losses- kudos for trying to save em!!! Amazing, how aside from this, summer lambing is just not talked about. Of course I wish more places would do it, since I, as a trip bus driver, have difficulty finding time to travel to a lamb farm and cuddle/ bottlefeed baby lambs during the school year. Of course I wish more of these trips I drive would visit lamb farms. That way, if you did have a lot of bottle babies, you'd undoubtedly get eager little helpers for that!! After all, what kid in the right mind wouldn't enjoy that; the wiggling tails are instant reward enough!!! 9:12 a handy little tidbit!!! The periodic baa's of baby lambs in the background are tooooooooo much!!!!! :) Thanks for sharing this!!

I've seen alot of video's of lambings where the lambs are " pulled " and had difficulty with this. I do see why you do this because you are a larger operation that needs to save as many as possible. The problem I have is when it's a home operation of 2 to 5 mothers where the owners get impatient with the process and " pull" too early and reach so far into the mother, I'm surprised they aren't damaged. If I weren't too old, I'd love to be the " night keeper " to be there at night while everyone else sleeps. To be there to help when there are problems as well as bottle feeding the weak ones. I think even if I weren't paid but just given room and board, I'd do it. I really love your video's and I see a lot of dedication and the care you have for your flock.

Hey Sandi, two things that we do with babies who have been in the Canal too long is; we use a turkey baster to suck all the fluids out of their nostrils. Weak babies have troubles expelling fluids out of their lungs and quickly drags them down further. Secondly, we towel rub them vigorously, helping to “wake up” the lungs and heart. Gl. On a side note, I ❤️ baby piglets, (love,love,love) but your baby lambs are awesomely cute!!!!!

Suggestion on fostering lambs. Put your Ewe in a head stanchion so she can eat, drink and lay down, put lambs with her and let them nurse etc for 24 hours. by then the ewes milk will go through them and they will smell like her then. before you turn her loose put baby powder all over her and the lambs.

We're not completely sure yet (lack of usable data) but we have better statistics in warmer weather (I.e. better claim, better up and gain) than cooler temperatures. I don't know if it's them or me but we all seem to have more fun when it's warm. Extreme heat is just as difficult as extreme cold imo. Great end to this season for you! On to the next one!

I used to work with black Angus and more than once we had to get a calf to hook up with a stepmom. What we needed to do was to get one feeding of the milk to go thru the calf and then the stepmom would take over as soon as she smelled her milk come out of the calf. I never milked a sheep. A couple of times we lost the calf and skinned it put the skin on the orphan calf that worked with the milk thing.

Hi Sandi.. excellent results.. i thought you were gonna move onto Steel breed? Is it true that your main business is growing grains? And sheep farm is actually your side business? You are almost by yourself, you have other main business going on and you still excel in sheep farming! :)

Lol what is that Olympic runner dog doing all the time in the background, lol you see him or her pop up and back down all across the floor lol, its funny but wondering is it trying to move the sheep or wanting for her to run jumping back and forth

Something my Grandpa would do if a lamb dies and there’s a orphan he would skin the dead lamb and put an orphan in that skin and the mother of the dead lamb would normally accept it. Another thing the old curmudgeon did was to breed groups of 25 every 2 weeks, Gramps would only keep ewes that would lamb without assistance. Love your videos.

Fascinating watching your channel, your ewes look in pretty good condition, bit to good for me, can cause lambing issues. Last lambing I did just over 4000 ewes, I think from memory just over 135%. When I was younger my father did over 9000. Totally different farming though..

@ Rob Ward, that is alot of sheep. I cant imagine the feed and pasture that must require and the manpower. Even on a cattle feedlot with machinery and tmr mixers, 4000 is alot to feed everyday.
