Native speakers, you too pronounce the /z/ sound closer to /s/ when the ending sounds are the nasal sounds, mostly /n/ the laterals and the stop sounds. It’s called devoicing. What do you think?

Since all the vowels are voiced, I wonder why after the "u" vowel the S is voiceless in these words; Bus, us, pus, gus ( unless the dictionary is wrong)

Bonjour Julie, comment savoir quand la prononciation se termine par 1. /. [ˈnoʊtəsəz] 2. [ˈnoʊtɪsɪz information prise dans toPhonetics, il semble qu’on puisse les prononcer de deux façons différentes, qu’en penses-tu? Une réponse serait grandement appréciée pour enlever mon interrogation??? Merci beaucoup pour tes précieux conseils! Comprendre, nous permet d’avoir le goût de continuer notre apprentissage de l’anglais et c’est ce que tu nous transmets et je l’apprécie beaucoup. Bye et au plaisir de te lire! Bonne Journée! 🇨🇦Linda

great explanation! Although I am a little confused because I did not hear any difference in some words. for instance, the final "s" is pronounced the same way in the words "groups" and "grabs". I mean, both are pronounced as voiceless, but in "grabs" it should sound voiced as explained in the video. why is that so, teacher?
@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent
@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent Жыл бұрын
Hi Elias - Thanks so much for your question! The final /z/ sound loses some of its voicing, so that it sometimes sounds like an /s/, or like a /z/ with very light voicing at the very beginning of the sound. This means the final "s" in "groups" and "grabs" ends up sounding very similar, like /s/, but the IPA transcription will still show "grabs" with /z/ at the end. I hope this helps! :)

Thank you in advance dear Julie! I’m perplexed to learn, according to the dictionary, that the word “ditz”, which ends in the letter Z is not pronounced as Z at the end. Could you explain why?😍
@AmericanEnglishForHindiUrdu
@AmericanEnglishForHindiUrdu 9 күн бұрын
Hi lwkbilly - Thanks for your comment! My best guess is this: The letter "z" in the word "ditz" is pronounced like /s/ because of the /t/ that comes before it. The T /t/ is voiceless, so the letter "z" is also voiceless, which makes it /s/. This type of "rule" might not be true for every word that has "tz" at the end, but that's my best guess as it why it happens in the word "ditz". I hope this helps! :)

@@AmericanEnglishForHindiUrdu Dear Julie- Thank you so much for your prompt reply! Armed with your explanation I looked up “waltz”. Lo and behold, the Z at the end of “waltz” is also pronounced like /s/. So, you’re right. Thank you so much for enlightening me!
