Thanks Steve. I have had the 1TB for a few years and it's never had a problem (knocking on wood!) and I have a 2TB. Neither are on the list. I bought one at Costco a few weeks ago but returned it because their was no way to register it. If I have something important I put it on several drives. Pictures if I really like, I print .

That's lucky, it's kind of a shock really because before knowing any of this would have happily bought a newer version of the drive blissfully unaware. Yeah I think having stuff on multiple drives or in physical form is definitely the way to go.

@@stevelitton Thanks for getting back to me. The kondor handle is way too expensive for me and does not fit my style of shooting. The drives though are quite fast and reliable.

That's fair enough, it's certainly out of my price range. I'm happy enough with a standard SSD and some creative mounting 🙂 The Pro Blade system is faster and more compact than my setup but the mags, transport and station all add up.

Great video mate - what a weird situation that WD/SanDisk have found themselves in.... I've also been using a couple of the SanDisk 1TB Extreme SSD's (61 version) and they've been absolutely perfect for me so far. I ordered two more of the same (so 2x 1TB Extreme), and after all the scaremongering I've eventually come to the conclusion that as long as you're not using the list of affected drives, you should be all good. I'm sure more is to come of this ordeal, but for now, at least I can trust the less expensive SDSSDE61-1T00 :)

I have an affected drive but Sandisk pretends my serial number is amongst the ones that don't need to update the firmware. Yet, I have random lost files, slow files access, even though my SSD is only 50% full.

@@optimaforever Hi, sorry I totally missed this comment in the thread and just noticed it coming back to answer another question. I have heard people having issues outside of the drives they stated. My advice would be to clear off your data, stop using it, get in contact with who you bought it from or try to get SanDisk to honour the warranty on the drive. If they don't have a solution for your particular faulty drive then your only option is to try to get a refund. I am hoping you have already done this and it is all sorted.

Had one of those for a year, just got 1TB of data fried. What a shame man, I use to love SanDisk, such a disappointment. Not even mentioning the frustration of losing all my data. Thanks for at least trying to warn future potential buyers.

Sorry to hear you lost your data. Yeah, it's a real shame because they are a big brand and sell some nice products. But once that trust in reliability is broken, it's very hard to go back to using them again.

I have 4 of these drives and have not thrown them away yet. I'll try the firmware and maybe use it as a secondary backup only until I can trust it again.

I'm done with SanDisk! My 4TB Extreme and 2TB Extreme Pro have both failed. SanDisk/WD is sending replacements but given the number of reports of the same issues with replacements, I don't trust them. So I'm out $580. There are at least 3 class action suits under way against SanDisk/WD but they are not taking new claims at this time.

Sorry to hear that, that is completely understandable. That is a lot of money to be out of pocket. The drives certainly aren't cheap, so you do expect a certain level of quality and customer service. I can't help but feel like if you have tried their solution of the firmware update and the issue still exists you should be entitled to a full refund. It only seems fair as you effectively have a faulty product.

That's good to hear. Yeah it sounds like they are definitely worth doing as well as having a bit of a contingency in place for any data stored on them.

@@stevelitton Hi Steve, I used the same 1T for recording on GH6 and another for working from when editing. I save to a RAID backup on a RAID. I'm going to look into the firmware as I'd hate to experience failure while recording. I've been very lucky with Sandisk SSD drives. For hobby video I do the same. On set we always have a DMT (Data Management Technician.) Wearing all hats requires the knocking of wood and keytones for the brain. ;-)

Hoping it leads to more handle and mount options. Do you have an opinion on the NVME M2 drives for video? Small rig has a holder and removable caddy for a card. Seems like it would speed offloading time, but the awkwardness of the card and caddy is something I think only the Kondor Blue handle has solved for some. It would be perfect in something that slid under the camera.

It definitely will I think, the Kondor Blue handle is just the first of many I'm sure. They look like great drives spec wise, it's just all about having a reliable caddy to go with it, that can be easily mounted to a cage or rails. If they added a cold shoe and NATO mount to the SmallRig enclosure that would be good. I like the idea of the Kondor Blue handle but it's a bit limiting for my style of shooting and quite expensive.

This is the first I’ve heard of this, just checked and I have the earlier 80 series I bought in 2020, had no issues at all, I exclusively use san disk and I’ve never had a single failure in 15+ years of using them, sad to see someone has majorly dropped the ball at San Disk. Worrying.

Yeah I'm the same, I have 2 of the E61 drives that were released the generation before these defective ones and they are still working with no issues. But I have just avoided touching any SanDisk SSD drives since all this happened.

Yep! I bought a 2TB extreme and pretty much straight away i had issues. It kept ejecting from my Mac Studio, I’d get dozens of notifications saying the drive had ejected (but not properly). I tried different ports and even wound up buying a new cable but nothing worked. I ended up returning to WD under the warranty. I had to wait a few weeks but they sent me a 4TB drive in replacement. I’m scared to use it. I’ve plugged it in and so far no issues, but I’m too scared to use it for anything in case it fails.

Sorry to hear that but I am glad to hear that you got a replacement. With any luck that new 4TB drive should be a lot more reliable as they alluded to it all being a firmware issue and that drive should now have the latest version installed on it. I would be a bit tentative about using it as well, I guess you can give it a test run with some non-critical files. I would definitely give it a try and check and then you can get a refund/replacement (again) if needed.

@@stevelitton thank you! That is what I’m hoping, that they have checked this one is unaffected. I think it’s also an E61 but if they’ve resolved the issue I’m hopeful this one will be okay…. Just not sure I want to trust it lol

@@OneDarkMartian Yeah I get that, I think I put a link in the description to the firmware checker for those drives but I *think the more recent ones are all supposed to be updated. It's a shame really because they are really nice drives to use.

I am looking for a portable ssd and target for E61 1TB at the beginning. Then I find this news and not sure it is safe or not. You would suggest me to buy Samsung T7 shield or SanDisk E61 for 1TB?

Hi, I have both drives and they have both been great, I've had no issues with either. But it is really hard to recommend SanDisk drives with everything that is going on at the moment. The T7 is a great drive but not as rugged as the E61, if you want a more durable alternative then maybe check out the T7 Shield. Hope that helps.

@@SIULUNLEE-xo4fn Hey, this won't reformat it or anything. It will work without the update, it just offers some stability fixes. It *shouldn't wipe any of your data when updating but I would backup the drive before doing any kind of update like this. Hope that helps.

Sorry to hear you are starting to have issues with it. I hope you didn't lose anything too valuable on there. There are options for data recovery if that is the case. Otherwise you could try formatting it and trying the firmware update to see if that makes a difference. It really kills your faith in the hard drive working though.

Yeah it's a shame it affects pretty much all of those faster drives, there isn't a great deal of competition on the market right now. But that's good that you just got a refund and now have the peace of mind they work.

It is more than just the drives you listed. I have a SanDisk Extreme 500gB which stopped working, it has taken me weeks to get WD to accept the issue, their support makes it as difficult as possible to get any help.I am now waiting for a replacement. However, I will never trust it or any WD drive again.

I can't argue that, I mean it's really more like "affected drives they have admitted have faults" I don't doubt it goes far beyond those. Sorry to hear your drive failed and glad you are getting a replacement, even though that's not full compensation. Yeah I'm not touching any of their products with a barge pole after this.

yeah I was one of the people that got affected like early last year or like 22',, I tried everything switching cables , ports ,even a terminal reset 0101 deep erasing with terminal commands, I even bought a new one from amazon to see if I just needed a new one same thing happened I returned it quickly after that lol,, I tried to see if firmware update was an option but they didn't have that solution back then so I tried returning to wd but they took forever to respond and kept trying to give me solutions till the point my warranty expired so I had it sitting around til this day then I rechecked to see what's going on and I now updated the firmware im gonna see if that does anything

Sorry to hear that. If you have those emails still then you have evidence of the drive failure during the warranty period but I appreciate getting anything resolve through them direct is going to be a headache. I guess the new firmware fix has to be worth a shot. If the firmware doesn't work then a hope you manage to get it all sorted and at least get your money back at the very least.

Ah sorry. The T7 Shield is a good drive. I use it all the time with my GH6 but you just need to make sure you do the firmware update on it for that kind of usage. I have a standard T7 drive that I use for Mac backups as well. Both have been reliable so far.

Hi, that code doesn't seem to line up with the size you have mentioned. 4T00 should be a 4TB drive I think. The best thing to do is to go here 👉 support-en.wd.com/app/firmwareupdate enter your serial number and see if there is an update available.

Sorry to hear that, that's awful 😔 There is a firmware fix for the affected drives but I don't believe the 2TB version of that drive is on the list. That update sadly won't recover your data though, it is just supposed to prevent it happening. I have heard some people saying they have had to pay for recovery tools and services. I hope you get your data back.

Hello, i know this video is old but I'll still ask. Is it common that a 2TB E61Sandisk SSD bluescreens my laptop when i plug it in? I have used this disc for around 2 months now and last time i checked it had 1.4TB storage left. I plugged it in today and after 10-15seconds it bluescreens my laptop. Does/did anyone have this issue and does anyone know how to fix it?

@@stevelitton I just tested it on my PC instead of my laptop and it works fine. I also tried it with my brothers laptop but his also blue screened, we both have the same model so maybe thats the cause but i dont think so because it worked fine on my laptop before

Update: I just tried to acces the files of the SSD and that also made my PC bluescreen. I'll just try contacting Sandisk support or something.

The way they seem to have circumvented the issue is with a firmware update. New drives being sold should have this now pre-installed. But there are still very likely lots of drives in circulation that haven't been updated.

I started using a SanDisk external SSD shortly before first hearing about this issue 2-3 months ago…so I obviously panicked (and bought a Samsung T7 Shield replacement) 😱🥶 until I realized that my SSD not only was a small size one not affected by the “bug” but it wasn’t even a v2 model - it’s a 480GB model from the previous generation 😙 - and in fact so far it hasn’t given me any problems. But just to be sure, I bought two external (mechanical) HDDs I use as backups for it. I’m actually more wary of using the T7 Shield, as last year I had a Samsung 256gb usb-c key that failed very badly (I didn’t lost any file just by miracle) after only a month of normal use.

Ah that's lucky, I have a few of the older drives and they are still going strong. I don't trust any drive enough to not make any other backup. My Samsung T7 Shields have been solid as well with no issues so far.

@@stevelitton Until the usb-c key failed I thought anything from Samsung would be solid (which is kind of silly as no brand is immune to fails)…and while I know SSDs and USB(-C) keys are not the same technology, my mind is still a bit wary.

@LucienSabre I totally understand, once a drive fails you totally lose your confidence in that brand. I had 2 WD drives fail and never bought them again. I also had some SanDisk SD cards fail which is quite rare but I have had others last for many years. I always record to two cards and then offload the files onto a RAID DAS drive. @@stevelitton One of my backup HDDs is a WD My Passport - but I’m not worried about it, I have had WD HDDs before this one and for me they’re the best in the category. I’ll probably do switch to the T7 Shield (never using it sounds like a waste of money to me), after all if it fails that’s what the backups HDDs are for.

@@LucienSabre I think anything storage related has a bit of a risk. Yeah I'm sure you will find a use for it. I use one drive as a Mac backup using Carbon Copy Cloner and if it dies it doesn't matter so long as my Mac doesn't die at exactly the same time 😂

I am facing the same problems. Most of the files are already gone and i just don't know what to do. It was 2 TB brought from Japan and I am in Nepal. I have no any idea what to do it cost 20 thousand yen.😢

Sorry to hear that. I'm sure even though you bought it in a different country SanDisk should be able to honour a replacement. You tend to get a warranty through them with each product. I appreciate that doesn't get your files back though, its a horrible situation to be in.

Ah thats awful news. I have seen that some people managed to recover files but I think it would require paid software or sending it to someone to get it done. I hope you manage to get your footage back.

@@stevelitton the drive in question was basically formatted. So I had to rebuild it and format it correctly to get the data back using a recovery suite and machine.

They certainly aren't doing a great job in terms of customer satisfaction recently. They hold a huge share of the market, especially in the camera sector and now people are starting to doubt their reliability.

Samsung T7 series drives are widely reported to be unreliable for video work. Curious because Samsung states they are more reliable for general use than the T5. The issue with T7 series drives seems to be related to the write buffer, if I understand. In other words, the T7 seems to be reliable but after some period of recording, they begin to drop frames. Personally, I'm interested in moving to a SanDisk Professional Pro Blade solution, which is based on a NVME SSD.

Yeah its odd because I have never found that but I know other people have and even Lumix mentioned it. But now since the latest T7 firmware update kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7-Dddmh3snbgIU.html Lumix stated that it is working so long as you are on version 2.3 of the camera firmware. Would you be using the Pro Blade with something like the Kondor Blue handle? I just don't like that the mags don't have a USB port, I just don't want to have to buy hundreds of pounds of accessories to have a working SSD drive.

@@stevelitton Yes, the Kondor Blue handle looks great. Thanks for the tip on T7 firmware. I won't be using these for video, but I have 5 or 6 of these devices, so worth any update for increased reliability.

Sorry to hear that 😕 Which one of the drives were you using? I know it doesn't compensate for the fact you lost your data but did you get a refund at least?

@@stevelitton it's 4tb v2.. not even been 3 weeks since I brought and already lost my data... They are denying the refund for the ssd

@@rohan7011 That's shocking, 3 weeks old, they should be replacing that no questions asked. That's an expensive drive too. Sorry to hear that.

@@rohan7011 You definitely should, you are surely entitled to one. I used to hold SanDisk products in pretty high regard but this whole situation and their handling of this has really tainted my opinion of them.
