I like how they call it "pro" but there aren't mounts for their clearly defined audience...

They already have the design with mounts on them, but only release them on next generations product. Its the classic big brand move. I wouldn't even surprise if brand like apple intentionally put annoying bugs on my ipad to make me update, the bugs gone, but performance dropped, just for me to buy a new one 🤣

I carry ProBlades between several remote departments & WFH as these are slim, light and feel quite indestructible. The surface accepts tape labels unlike a rubberized cover. Sigma fp utilizes external raw storage as this and coincidentally the ProBlade was a consideration for me earlier today... But nah ~ Dark Power Lab provides nifty NVMe side or under mounts to a sensible cage for this and those are proving remarkably effective in my experience.

ordered the Pro Blade Station, an intense smell of electrical burning started to happen. Yes, I used the included 100watt cable and Sandisk power plug. BH quickly sent me a RMA. I now waiting for the Pro-Blade transport to see if our drives (12TB) are damaged....this has been a Sandisk nightmare-our first Sandisk product...Thank you BH for quickly taking our return... We hope our next Pro Blade Station will work...

as much as I love the speed and size of NVME, keep in mind solid state drives don't do well for archival backup that sits around. Without power these deteriorate quickly and your files will become corrupt, can be as quick as a few years. NVME is great for working drives but not so much for backup and archival. For those it's best to use old school mechanical hdd.

Is there a list of compatible cameras that will support this system? Could one assume any newer digital mirrorless camera with a USB-C data output will support this system (i.e. if the digital camera supports a webcam mode)?

The PRO-BLADE Transport is HUGE compared to the Samsung T5 that has become an industry standard for BMPCC4K users. I wish they had more form factors for the Transport. I can see for example a thin long one with a slit to get screws through so it could be mounted on a cage, with a locking cable. What I'm wondering is if they can put a power passthrough on the Transport, so you could charge the camera while writing on the external drive - but I don't know if the BMPCC4K can support this anyway.

Of course SanDisk does not offer cheap empty NVME caddys to use with existing NVMEs. Proprietary systems like that are just a big money grab operation so Id rather go with something like OWC who let me configure things in a much more open and less proprietary kind of way. As far as B&H goes, even if it looks like a review video it's nothing but a SanDisk ad.

For *most* PC users, Thunderbolt remains incompatible, but the device will work with Windows over standard USB 3.2 Gen 2. If you want Thunderbolt support on Windows, you need a PC that explicitly supports Thunderbolt. Some prebuilts have it, but if you're building your own, you need to make sure your motherboard supports it, OR supports a Thunderbolt add-in card.

Still, goes to show how little accurate info there is out there ;)

I buy nothing but nvme drives and buy a housing caddy and for $110-120 i now have the fastest portable drives that are so much faster than a SSD drive. I got tired of paying the price for a portable SSD drive when you can go and do this with 2 to 3 times faster NVME drives. Buying a portable SSD is in the past for me.

Finally a 20 Gbps device. Now that's Thunderbolt 4 is a thing. I mean, it's a bit silly. USB 20 Gbps was introduced in 2017. Thunderbolt 4 in 2020. Also, there were probably sporadicly more, don't quote me, but far and few. Logicly. I mean, people we're happy with about 1 GB/s, but indeed for video you rather have 2 Gb/s. Newer models will probably have faster NVME's... Future's looking bright.
@RaquelFoster
@RaquelFoster Жыл бұрын
The video is repeatedly comparing the price of cheap SSDs with other things then ignoring the fact that PRO-BLADE mags cost about double the price of normal SSDs. A 4TB PRO-BLADE mag is more than a 4TB high-end gaming SSD. The graph shown at 4:06 (from 2021) speculated that SSDs would cost $40/TB in 2023. That's definitely not true. Regardless, the 4TB PRO-BLADE mag is $100/TB. The 1TB and 2TB versions are more than $100/TB. The transport is basically a modular SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD. They are both 2000MB/s. A 4TB SanDisk Extreme Pro USB-C SSD is $331. The 4TB PRO-BLADE Transport is $450. In that context I think it's pretty interesting since you're only paying 36% extra for modularity. But it's proprietary. It's hard to think of a situation where I'd rather have multiple PRO-BLADE mags instead of just getting multiple SSDs that I can plug into anything. In the video the SSD is mounted using a spring-loaded battery holder which doesn't hold the SSD very securely. I would argue that using a regular SanDisk Extreme Pro USB-C SSD would be safer because the Extreme Pro is smaller, lighter, more rugged, and has a grippy exterior. The only benefit I see with the PRO-BLADE mags is that you might be able to swap drives a few seconds faster. You can't record more than the capacity of the SSD. The transport doesn't hold multiple mags and let you hot-swap while recording. You still need to stop recording after you fill up 4TB. The fact that the transport is too big for normal SSD holders yet doesn't fit multiple mags is a really confusing design choice. Is this trying to compete with external recorders? A Ninja V is $400, and a 4TB SanDisk 2.5" SSD is $240. This system is $450 for the station plus $450 for a transport with a 4TB mag. And you don't get a Ninja V monitor. Is this trying to compete with thunderbolt RAID enclosures like the ThunderBay Mini? It doesn't do RAID. I would absolutely love a thunderbolt RAID enclosure that used hot-swappable NVMe drives. I hope the PRO-BLADE format catches on, because I haven't seen anybody else even try. But it's not clear if SanDisk would let other manufacturers make compatible drives. And if not, the the price will never be competitive and the 'ecosystem' will never catch on.

it's all pricey and proprietary. The real big idea would be to have cameras start to accept NVME as the native storage instead of CF express. They are small enough to do it. Just pop them in and record directly to them. No need for all of this equipment or extra steps.

Yeah this is pretty niche. I'd avoid this at all costs. If you can afford this system, you should probably just upgrade your camera to something that records your spec internally. No need to put your production into the hands of a single USBC cable. They even imply here that it's not smart to be plugging and unplugging USBC from your camera all the time.

Meh. Not a game changer. Same old workflow. I'd rather have the pro-blade station be 1 or 2 slot with a Huge RAIDed repository, and a direct transfer button for unattended storage backup. No computer. Plug the card in, and dump in the field. Bring it all back to the editor, and do what you want. Why can't that the pro-blade station be a Homer Bucket to throw your media in? Imagine being able to chuck that many full blades in a homer bucket. And while your at it. make that homer bucket have more than a blade slot. So it can be able to carry blueberries, grapes, and cherries. That's what I was hoping for. These companies always confine themselves to a small space. Why don't ever think bigger? So- Meh..

I fail to see anything useful with this. These kinds of boxes are useful if they are used for raid arrays, but otherwise it’s just a glorified usb-c cable. What does it do exactly? Transfer files from SSDs? Keeping SSDs cool? With industrial design? These are all non-issues. 4tb Sandisk SSDs can be had for arpund 350$ nowadays (twice as cheap), require you to have only a cable instead of a whole mobile housing (which itself costs like a 4tb ssd and functions as a USB cable). SSDs have never melted or reduced performance for thermal reasons, at least for me. Don’t even get me started on the industrial design without the needed mounting options lol😂😂😂 this product line is bullcrap, please don’t fall for it. BTW the stated 2000 read/write speed will never be achieved and depends on stuff like bottlenecks from camera/computers, operating system, type of cable, type of SSD formatting etc. this does nothing that a regular Sandisk Pro SSD doesnt do for a fraction of the price while being more compact and just as reliable.
