Sandstone Peak Ridge Traverse: Be Very Afraid

Well, that was intense. Sandstone Peak is one of the most popular hikes in Southern California. But that's far from the insane climb that this was. We wanted to create our own ridge traverse between Tri Peaks and Sandstone Peak, so we set out on the Mishe Mokwa trail to see what kind of scrambling we could get up to. After a short trail run to Tri Peaks, we found ourselves on one simply epic ridgeline, scrambling, bushwhacking and climbing our way across with unparalleled coastal views along the entire traverse. The name "Sandstone Peak" now has a whole new meaning in our book!
DISCLAIMER: This ridge traverse is NOT the standard easy hike to Sandstone Peak. It requires extensive third and sometimes fourth class (or higher, depending on the route) climbing skills and should not be attempted without the proper climbing experience. As always, hike and climb at your own risk.

"Full many a gem of purest ray serene The dark unfathom'd caves of ocean bear: Full many a flower is born to blush unseen, And waste its sweetness on the desert air." ... great poem by Thomas Gray. Pretty much meaning that normal people do great and amazing things everyday but do not get talked about or mentioned.

Well done, Tom! Also, quoted by Susan Sarandon in the all-time great movie Bull Durham -- best movie use of poetry ever, because it perfectly encapsulates the whole idea of Kevin Costner's character. Glad you liked this one -- we love exploring new routes in our home mountain range! ❤

Great day to be out there doing your guy's thing! Just a quick correction:(sorry, not trying to be a 'fact check fascist') The peak (Mt Allen) and the surrounding surrounding rocks are not Sandstone. They are the same rocks that are found at Malibu Creek State Park: volcanic breccia. Malibu Creek seems to be the dividing line in the S.M mountains. Everything south and east of MCSP IS sandstone and everything north and west is Breccia. Love that you two are out and about. Also, just watched your Santa Paula waterhole video last weekend and was reminded of going down the waterslide and getting channeled into the far right slot and dislocating two of my right toes on the part of the rockwall that dives down into to slide/pool interface. Circa 1995. Keep up the good vibes!

That's a great question -- sometimes you guys tell us about things, but then sometimes we just invent ideas. Like on this one, we've run the traditional Sandstone loop a few different times and always wondered if it was possible to climb some of those peaks on the northwest ridge line by Tri Peaks. So from just wondering about that, we came up with the idea to try a full ridge traverse. These ideas don't always pan out (like our unfruitful search for the 7th Pine Lake in the snow), but it's always fun to give them a go! ❤️

Was worth the wait for your new adventure. Looks really great. I worry though as you seem to climb some parts which look like one would approach it with rope protection. How do you assess the amount of risk that you take on a hike like that?
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great question, Anna, and maybe one we should even do a whole video on at some point! Basically, our approach is only to do things that are below our ability level unless we are roped. So for example, when we climbed up the crack on that summit block on Tri Peaks, I felt very confident and handled it pretty easily. It looked scary, but had great holds the whole way up and was pretty easy for me. I had a rope in my pack so I could belay Elise from above, but as usual once she saw me free climb it she wanted to do it too, and handled it fine. There was also a different block that had an overhang near the top. I really wanted to try it, but opted not to because it would have been pushing up too close to my ability level, and thus too difficult to try in the wild (although I boulder harder things all the time in the gym where the mats below are soft). The idea is to keep doing harder things as our ability level increases, but to increase the ability level in safe environments first before using it out in the wild. --A

Beautiful! I’m going to be in Southern Cali next week, but still trying to figure out an actual destination. Was thinking San Diego, but I love these mountains right by the ocean. This area looks beautiful! What are your top 3 favorite hikes in southern Cali?
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
That's awesome Steve! And this is a great question. If you're asking what we'd recommend in terms of 3 hiking destinations, I think it depends how far you're willing to drive and what you'd consider to be technically "SoCal". If you want to stay really local, Sandstone Peak, Temescal Canyon, or Mt. Baldy would all be beautiful this time of year and we'd consider those to be SoCal classics. Winter makes a lot of the larger peaks in the area less accessible (for example Gorgonio) but if you've got the skills we'd say they're probably even more thrilling this time of year. Then, of course, if you're considering top 3 in the larger SoCal area, then we have to start including things in the Sierras, Joshua Tree, Death Valley or Yosemite. I fear you've asked an entirely loaded question Steve! 😂 -E

@@LiveHardxLoveHard Fair enough. Lol I’ll actually be heading to Death Valley to spend a few days over there first. Plan on doing Telescope Peak one of those days, but then I want to head farther west and I honestly do not have a clue where I want to end up. Lol I am strongly considering the area from this video. Sandstone peak looks very cool. Regardless, I appreciate your help! You always give such thoughtful responses and your videos have already helped me a ton!🤙🏼

I'll pipe up to say that San Diego County has some really nice hiking. We don't have the 10,000ft+ peaks that you see in the San Jacinto, San Bernadino and San Gabriel mountains, but I'd stack the Villager->Rabbit route in Anza-Borrego over any of those for difficulty and vertigo. (The lhxlh video of that hike was how I found Adam and Elise's stuff.) Whale Peak from Blair Valley is a really nice mostly off-trail desert hike with some light pathfinding and gully scrambles. The Dripping Springs-Wild Horse loop through Agua Tibia is a really nice showcase of SoCal chaparral (including 100 year old manzanita and ribbonwood groves), Coulter pine forest, and oak lined canyons with some great views of San Jacinto and the Santa Rosas from the ridgeline. Just trying to highlight some of the less popular, but lengthier and more difficult hikes in the county.

You two are beyond adorable, individually and together! :-) I wish you didn't take so many risks in places with no one else around, and little to no cellular coverage. Do you leave your itinerary with friends, who know to call for help if you don't check in by a certain time? Have you considered carrying an emergency radio beacon (an EPIRB in the maritime world)?
@LiveHardxLoveHard

Thanks Liam! And yes, on every challenging hike like this we bring a Garmin mini, so that if any emergency occurred we would be able to call for help immediately from basically anywhere. But with that said, we want to reassure you that we train really hard on our climbing skills and never try anything that's above our skill level. Of course accidents can still always happen, but we really try to be vigilant about avoiding the pitfalls that lead to them.
