Black Star Canyon Falls: The Loop of Doom

Black Star Canyon Falls is a classic California waterfall hike. But legend has it that not only can you scramble up and into the waterfall, you can climb all the way up the steep cliffs surrounding the falls to explore way beyond into the Cleveland National Forest. Of course, not only was the route beyond the falls sketchy, it was filled with lovely poison oak to top it all off, causing it to earn its very appropriate name - the "Loop of Doom". This was a popularly requested viewer recommendation, and you know LiveHardxLoveHard can never resist a good dicey adventure!

Right?!?! Why the heck would anyone who likes nature enough to do the hike want to deface it so horribly? We're planning to organize a clean-up later this summer where we DO carry paint with us -- rock colored paint -- to cover over all that ugly graffiti. ❤️

If these types of videos are not my favorite, then they are close to my my favorite. There is a feeling of being extra-alive when you are out in nature like this. I love the peacock. What a beautiful bird. I have never seen one in the wild like this. If I were uber-rich, I would have a few of them parading around the estate, and flirting with the females. That fly-in map you have at the beginning there is very cool. It really helps put you there. This video was posted only a few days ago, and already there are 10k views. So I am not the only one who is there climbing this gnarly terrain with you. You are obviously in great shape. Nice energy.

We are so happy you enjoy these vids! Peacocks are truly a special creature, we're just so curious to know how it ended up there. Apparently, another viewer told us that peacocks roam wild and free in the neighborhoods of Florida. Who knew? Glad to know that we can share that feeling of being alive that we get from being out on the trails. It's like an addictive drug that keeps us coming back for more!

Black Star Cyn Falls is located near Silverado CA. There’s a bit of don’t-look-down vertigo as our climbing heroes are expected to climb up some pretty steep & sketchy hills using nothing but their bare hands, feet and anything else that’ll keep them from falling and risking serious injury. There’s also some we very nice scenery along the way and sadly a reminder that not everyone that ventures out are there to enjoy the scenery and use the “leave no trace” mentality. There are caves where people have chosen to leave graffiti. Putting the distraction aside this hike looked challenging for the average person but Adam & Elise made it look like a good workout routine. Note: I’ve been busy planning a vacation so, I’ll check back in mid May. Love & Respect.

It really is a great hike, Bryan -- and the waterfall is probably roaring right now with all the rain! Next time you should try the climbing route, just off to the right of the waterfall cave pool. But make sure you have pants or tights for once you get to the forest area, because there was def some poison oak!

Wow! The last 2 adventures have been gnarly! Great job bringing creativity and adventure....in spades👏 A little tip for poison oak exposure: When you get home, hop in the shower with a container of bleach. Pour the bleach down your arms and legs, and then "wash" using your bare hands, and rinse off. The bleach takes the oils off your skin, and you won't be affected. It works better, the sooner you can do it. So for example on this adventure, had you had a bottle of bleach in the car, if there was a water source at the trail head, you could have done a quick rinse of arms, legs, and exposed torso, then driven home, and done it for real. You can do it during the days following the exposure, if you start to see the itchy, red, blotchy areas appearing. Just pour some bleach on the site, let it sit for a moment, and rinse with cold water. Poison Oak is most "dangerous" when the leaves are orange and red, which typically happens later in the Summer and Fall, with exposure to hot Summer/Fall temps. Also, and I have no formal proof of this; it seems like people who don't eat dairy, have little to no reaction to it. (Dairy protein is seen as a foreign invader by the body's immune system, so the body ramps up the immune system, making it sensitive to everything. So people who consume dairy are more prone to allergies, asthma, plants like poison oak/ivy/stinging nettles, skin issues, brittle hair, etc.)
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
Todd that is great advice! We did rinse off thoroughly of course, but didn't know the trick about the bleach. Next time, we will for sure bring some with us. Fortunately, we've been eating very little dairy so should be in pretty good shape there -- and perhaps proving your point, I eat more dairy than Elise and so far I'm the only one of us that's had a reaction to the poison oak (but thankfully not too bad so far). --A

You guys have been killing it the past couple of hikes/climbs! Your fearless adventurous spirit amazes me, even if I get a little nervous watching you! I managed to take a gnarly fall just doing easy boulder hopping after my foot got caught in a bush. Wounds healed up, knee is still not 100% from the impact and I've lost a lot of confidence - now I just inch my way up and down like an old lady. 😂 Hopefully the confidence will come back and I'll dare to do things half as dicey as you! @LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
Teddie so sorry to hear about the fall! Of course be careful until your knee is 100%, but don't let it make you lose confidence -- it's always on easy boulder hopping that things like that happen. Adam's worst fall so far was boulder hopping on the way up to Cloudripper. That was so ironic, because going up the face was a really scary climb and he navigated it perfectly, but had a bad fall on the easy approach when an innocent-looking boulder gave way. It just happens sometimes, but we know you won't let adversity slow you down for long! Big hugs from both of us!! ❤

@@LiveHardxLoveHard just an update on Jackson falls. My sister and i went June 4th and it was bone dry. Overgrown past the punch bowls but doable. On the way back we stopped at the slide because she was determined to try it this time. A word of caution, my sister did the slide 2 times then decided to go a bit higher up. This put her into the wall near the bottom and she lacerated her elbow. She got very lucky, it looked like she hit her head but that wasn't the case. You never disappoint. Thank you for taking me on another great adventure. Don’t you feel cold when you plunge into those pools? What is the temperature there at the moment. I noticed you get your shoes wet. Mine are less light than yours and just don’t get wet. How does it work when you continue walking? Any hot spots because of wet fabric?

Thanks Anna! Oh yes it was definitely cold! I think it was about 65 out that day but the water was MUCH colder. We’ve been practicing cold exposure during the week to help build up to it though :) the wet socks are definitely not fun but we usually bring an extra pair to be safe!

Walker Pass to Owen's Peak way easier. You can run out a Mile the south side. Great desert views. You can go all the way to Kennedy Meadows. Take water. None. Zero. Dust. Kiavah Wilderness entry is off 395 past frog balls place, literally same entrance. But Owen's is way better and backside. Usually combine it with trip to 100 giants. Campgrounds are up by Sherman Pass Kern River side. Good weekender. You can drive out backwards come out at Ceasar Chávez Keene Cafe. Caliente Road?

I think you all should climb Mt. St. Helens. People say its easier in the winter due to traction from the snow (different hiking route in the winter that is 2 miles longer). I climbed it in the summer and was literally on top of the clouds at the top. Probably the hike I'm most proud of having done. You have to get a permit though I will say.

Yes! That is freaking awesome that you did St. Helens, and we have a goal to get up to Washington and do several of the volcano hikes including St. Helens and Rainier. If we don’t do it in the fall of ‘22, then definitely summer ‘23!

Nice jungle adventure! Jealousness! If you get stuck climbing with poles in hand. . . I colapse them and slide them above your waist belt between your back and the pack. Not ideal but good in a pinch. Did you guys get the red rock canyon beta I sent you? My trip there was incredible, unbelievable video with the local legend! but quite death defying. Let me know, cheers! Karl
