Fred (Redd Foxx) is out of town and Grady (Whitman Mayo) is the boss of the Sanford household, but how can he deal with Aunt Esther (LaWanda Page)?
From Season 3, Episode 21 'Tyranny, Thy Name Is Grady' - With Fred away in St. Louis, Grady is put in charge of the house. He quickly makes his presence known by keeping Aunt Esther out and preventing Lamont from bringing girls home.

ABOUT SANFORD AND SON: The highest-rated half-hour series in NBC history at the time, Sanford and Son stars Redd Foxx as the cantankerous sexagenarian Fred Sanford and Demond Wilson as his son Lamont, also his business partner in the family junk-dealing business. To prevent his son from leaving home, and bent on having things his own way in general, Fred often calls upon such ruses as fake heart attacks or phony back ailments. Lamont usually sees through these subterfuges, but because he loves his father, he lets him think he's getting his way.

Whitman Mayo was my cousin. We were in Atlanta back in 1979 partying. Supercool and humble. People were all around us in the parking lot saying hello to him.

Just imagine actually knowing a church woman who was very similar to her. We had one at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Columbus Ohio. She was strong and bossy, carried her Bible everywhere and kept a hat on her head ALL the time.

Ironically, the highest rated episode of this all-time great sitcom was one with Grady as the star, not with Fred, who was out due to his contract dispute with NBC. It was the episode where Ron Glass guest starred as Lamont’s friend Herman who had visited the Sanford home after getting out of jail.

Redd Foxx demanded more money. The producers said 'no.' He refused to return to the show. He was gone for a few weeks or months (I forgot which). He returned when the situation was resolved. While he was gone Grady (Whitman Mayo) stayed at the house. Basically, filling in.

Grady Wilson was also the name of lead preacher Billy Graham's BFF and right hand man. For using that name for more than four years, it would've not gone unnoticed by the BGEA. They had to have given the Sanford and Son crew which included Norman Lear and Bud Yorkin a pass.
