Sanford and Wixom lake are located in Mid Michigan. This footage was filmed on May 21 2020. This was after the collapse of the Edenville Dam on May 19 2020. Wixom Lake was rapidly rising due to heavy rainfall and the dam could not hold back the water. The side of the dam failed sending water rushing towards Sanford Village. The aftermath and damage left behind is devastating. I will be doing a follow up to show the progress in a week. Make sure you subscribe to catch this.
Here is the follow up video on the progress being made in Sanford:

When I was in grade school ( mid 1960's) they had short info movies. The one I remember was the Army Corp. of Engineers tame the mighty Mississippi. Never ever think you will "tame" any body of water and never ever build in flood ways, flood planes or areas prone to flooding. Water always wins.

And man gets the award for stupidity, every time I hear man made dams I cringed at the thought. Nature is just taking back what’s hers, man think he can claim land/lands. Nature is in total bitch mode, look all over the world people. Stop thinking talking virus and look around. Yellow stone is having issues and the land mass in areas are rising and breathing and that is a really bad sign. Are we reaching our end like the dinosaurs did? Are there new occupants waiting for their turn at this plant? Who the hells cares, man is too busy crying over money, hollow promises from our government and whatever else that is self damaging.

You have choices how to spend money. Fixing a dam does NOTHING for anyone to see in a township or municipality. Politics is about visibility and bragging about what a good job you did that you can see. If a damn doesn't break that's expected. Ho hum, another day, but if you pave main street, and add playground equipment or modernize a school you can SEE THAT. So, you don't fix and maintain dams.

Very amazing video, my heart hurts for those people who have lost their homes. And some their lives. I live in a town that floods majorly every 2-5 years and it always destroys everything in its path. I live right above the grand lake, and when they don’t open the dam gates for days. We experience the backup of water in a very harsh way. And I know people who died because of it. America really needs to focus on water issues, just as much as anything else important in the U.S.

@SweetStuffOnMonarchLane
@SweetStuffOnMonarchLane 4 жыл бұрын
@Neil Carpenter Wrong. This is a very complicated issue and you should quit spreading falsehoods. It's Governor Whitmer, not Whitmore. The dam owner, Boyce, has been in trouble with the Feds for 2 decades for not having an adequate spillway area for flooding and they recently turned it over to the state, which was in the process of investigating when the flood hit. Boyce *illegally* lowered the lake level to avoid having to spend money on repairs he should have done years ago. And they are fresh-water mussels, not some "sea" creature, dummy.
@SweetStuffOnMonarchLane
@SweetStuffOnMonarchLane 4 жыл бұрын
@Neil Carpenter It was known about and neglected by Boyce, the dam owner, who lives in Las Vegas and didn't care enough about the people (or the fresh water mussels) in the area to repair his dam and follow FEDERAL laws.

@Hevach
@Hevach 4 жыл бұрын
These dams are privately owned by a man named Lee Mueller. He makes millions a year off his dams (these and IIRC two others). The cost to repair their deficiencies was trivial - under $100,000 for the Sanford dam and under $150,000 for the Edenville dam. He was in court as recently as the week before the break suing the state to be allowed to delay repairs until a buyer is secured who would foot the bill. A buyer fell through six months before the flood because Mueller wouldn't make the repairs first. These were small dams and repairs were not expensive. But a rich person refused to pay less than $250k to maintain structurs from which he made that much profit every month, and now thousands of homes are devastated.

You could just as easily say, it's about time the USA stopped let private individuals and companies hoard billions of dollars instead of paying a fair amount in tax so that all infrastructue could be as good as it was before Ronald Reagan started dishing out tax cuts to the wealthy.

7:13 There are a TON of those old 100 year old Steam Shovels down inside of Lake Worth over in Fort Worth, Texas. The lake was dug out in 1914, and when they were close to finished, but not quite it rained so hard for 2 weeks straight all of the old equipment used to dig the lake got submerged. The lake now is filled with over 100 years worth of silt and mud, which has undoubtedly covered much of the old equipment that was left behind. There is also an old Convair B-36 Peacemaker that crashed into the lake in the early 50's. They partially pulled up some of it but much remains in the late today likely also buried under 70 years of silt.

Jordan my heart goes out to your community. I am a native New Orleanian and returned to the city following Hurricane Katrina. The city had been underwater for weeks following breaks in canals. I rode my bike around the city in shock and spoke to many residents also in shock. I had so many memories of what this city had been and what it was following the water’s removal. It was difficult to believe that the devastation and smells could ever be removed, but it happened. There was an outpouring of help from so many sources and many words of encouragement and prayers. Looking back one factor that has stuck in my mind more than any other is how many New Orleanian’s came back , rolled up their sleeves and got to work. They didn’t rely on government and didn’t wait for money to filter through the system. They recognized a natural disaster had occurred which set off a chain of events that highlighted human errors and weaknesses. Waiting around for resolutions of responsibilities or guilt were not options. There was so much to do and people got busy. It is 15 years now come August and New Orleans is back to normal- well as normal as this crazy city can be. In our hearts we are back: culture, music, food and a deep appreciation of everyone who helped us and believed in the worth of this city. Your own work on what has happened to your community and how you put this history together is remarkable. The narration, the filming, the music and the look on your face as you described everything touched me. Hope is what drives us forward in such disasters and gives us strength to believe in the future. My prayers to your community and I hope one day I will find a video of yours showing your town up and running. Maybe it won’t be the same, maybe it will be better. I will say you should think about developing your talent for documenting events of historical significance. Digital media is a platform of immense potential.

the Narrative of record rain ( driest spring around here in forever ) is garbage. 2 days of rain throughout most of MI, well before this flood, does not equal out. Those days may have set records, but overall no. They also keep saying "500" year flood, pretty sure that was back in 1986, so exactly what caused this multiple dam failure? Anyone like Clams?Midland-Sanford floods every spring. 99% of time. It didn't this year. Until now. Record setting BS.This creepy governor and her AG need to be investigated for negligence to human lives. I'm no fan of Trump either, but I take great offense to an AG telling the president MI doesn't want him here because of a mask. None of these people truly speak for us, don't try to start now. They can take their Plan -Demic and choke on their corona virus fake number crap.

Nice overview of the damage! And all this resulted from the owners not wanting to spend $83,000, years ago, in the maintenance required! It's their fault, as well as the fault of the authorities that should have forced them, but looked the other way. As usual, it will translate to: no one will be indicted! This collusion between authorities and big businesses, is the source of all major problems today! With the people being constantly abused from both sides.

As in solar today and wind generation, dams were a big private initiative from the late eighteenth century into the early part of the nineteenth century. That makes these dams 100 years old infrastructure. The only difference? If wind/solar fails you don't lost your ENTIRE TOWN.
@Person01234
@Person01234 4 жыл бұрын
@@dwightstjohn6927 Only 25% of large dams are even capable of generating electricity and I would wager most of those have other functions too. Dams aren't just an energy initiative that can be replaced by wind and solar. Most places need dams you can't just get rid of them. There are a LOT of differences between dams and other renewable energy sources, sayin g there's no other difference is ridiculous.

Yeah they did. The gov gave the guy running the dam tickets for years and eventually sued him because they knew there were inadequate spillways. So they sue him into selling the dam to the county, which was apparently in progress, and then the county decided that because they didn't know anything about running dams... they'd just hire the guy back on for maintenance. Same guy that just got thrown off for not getting the job done, they hired him right back. And the whole time the Wixom Lake home owners etc were just like 'we need more water in our lake! our property values are going down! put more water in there!'. Sadly kinda predictable what happened, and of course when the dam broke... none of their homes got leveled, they're homes are basically fine in comparison to everyone down stream from them.

Great job dude. Today we find out the owners of the dam were sued by MI attorney general for wanting to lower the lake level last fall. The MI AG sued for environmental reasons-they were afraid the runoff left would be too little to sustain some stinking clams. This disaster is the direct responsibility of the Governor and her AG. Democrats ruin everything they touch.
